funny how alot of hip hop fans dislike Macklemore now because he has made it mainstream
The Heist is a great hip hop album not many pop songs on it at all

I'm not a big fan because he's a below average emcee, he does make some catchy songs in fairness. It's nothing to do with underground versus mainstream

The words 'mainstream' and 'underground' should be stricken from every Hip-Hop fan's vocabulary.

tbh i havnt listened too much of him but from what i did i liked..he's talented there's no doubt about that.

Ok i will try and describe best for you...

First i live in Ireland and i don't live in the ghetto so the best rapper to me is not the one talking about drugs, money, ****ing, and thugging...

Lets take tupac for example and biggie great rappers with great songs but also fall into the thugging department but you would forgive them because tupas gave us changes and biggie gave us "life after death"...

I need to relate to rap music... i havent related to a rapper from the other side of the pond since Eminem then i do like macklemore...

For me he is the best rapper since Eminem... Thats just my opinion and it don't mean it crystal...

It would have been quicker for you to just type "he's white"

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,341 ✭✭✭Bobby Baccala

So what you're saying is if you can relate to a rapper they're the best, which means you're dismissing skill, that's like me saying yeah I can relate to drake ,I'm a half black jewish child actor who thinks he's gangster so therefore he's the best.

Macklemore fan for a while now, The Heist is a very good album, wouldn't really call him "pop" at all, even that Thrift Shop song has a bit of depth to it if your listening :)

Some excellent songs in his catalogue and hopefully he keeps on going in the right direction

The Irish drinking song is pretty cringeworthy though. It was the first song I heard from him and was ready to dismiss him as a white gimmick. Then I saw the same love video and released he had some depth to him, and then looked up the album.

Macklemore & RL are undoubtedly talented, and the Heist was great. That said, they are far from rap's saviours (what does it need saving from anyway), though I hope they will be around for a while and release some quality music.

I do think the fact that he is white, and that thrift shop appeals to the current fashionable hipster tendancies, has helped him no end. It's something that non-traditional rap fans can latch on to. I think it will be fairly difficult to straddle the line between radio/mainstream success and quality hip-hop, but lets see how they get on.

I don't think hip-hop needs saving from anything much at the minute, but if it did the OP's logic here is completely arse ways. You're saying he's the best at the minute mainyl because he's so relatable for somebody like you. Surely though if hip-hop was to have a saviour, it would be somebody who takes it back to its inner city urban roots, not takes it out to the suburbs and puts a middle class college educated face on it.

Not that I think it should be one way or the other, but if anything, Macklemore as the face of it would take it further away from its origins and roots than Eminem ever did.

That Thrift Shop is one of the worst songs I've ever heard

Are you basing an opinion of him on that one song?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,559 ✭✭✭blaze1

Only heard thrift shop and just saw it as pure commericial tbh.... But the pure fact is my 9 year old niece was saying how she didn't like JLS anymore but Macklemore was AWWWSOME.

That girl has got taste, would you rather her listening to JLS? :pac:

Basing your opinion on one song by an artist, any artist, is pointless (imo!). Same goes for anything

At 9 I would rather she listen to JLS, shes a kid. Kids are entitled to listen to pop ****e. Its what that market is aimed at. It just spoke volumes that she didnt like them anymore and was listening to this song.

After hearing that one song it wouldn't encourage me to listen to anymore tbh.

Lads its **** all to do with the fact he is white...

Jay z is my favourite rapper but I'm sick to the teeth of him rapping about how rich he is, his bitch and how he used to slang dope...

    Kayne west the same....

Biggie and tupac dead, and you got nas who's last album was all about his ex...

Outkast havent been around, and i taught lil wayne was good but now he doped to the eye lids 24/7...

Joe budden's tune 'walk with me' my favourite rap tune of all time, and his stuff with slaughthouse is ok...

Ken lemar is a serious prospect and j cole amazing too...

But i honestly do think macklemore has something the rest don't got and thats straight up honesty in his music...

I dont really care what anyone thinks here about that, but for a rapper to rap about commercialism, gay marriage, etc..... and still be better then the rest at the moment then that accounts for something...

People got to be sick of the same rappers talking about the same **** all the time... usually consists of money, guns and drugs.... And don't get me wrong 50 cents 'Get rich or die trying' was off the charts...

Even Eminem lost it but get it back with recovery...

    Macklemores songs mean something people...

And one more thing devlin, kano, akala, just to name but of a few of England's rappers are unbelievable..... In my eyes they creeping ahead of americas best at the moment...

    This.

I pity anyone who does this. You don't like "Thrift Shop", fine, but at least try another song or two. Here's two, for example.

Also, I remember once the top comment on YouTube for Kendrick Lamar's "Michael Jordan" was something along the lines of "Thank God this wasn't the first Kendrick song I listened to because if it were, I doubt I would've given him another chance." I'm sure most of you would agree that someone writing off Kendrick because of "Michael Jordan" would be making a huge mistake. That is all.

Like I mean, if you don't like him as a rap artist then that's 100% fine, but Christ give them a chance.. Add 'Otherside' and 'Wings' to that list too :p

Am I meant to be offended by that? I don't care how you feel about watch the throne, genuinely don't give a fùck, jay and kanye are both superior mc's to macklemore, that's not just my opinion, it's universally accepted.

I would say Kanye is a superior musician. I wouldn't say it's a slam dunk v Macklemore regarding emceeing ability though.

    Jay-Z clearly trumps him though.

What i agree with is that yes kayne west and jay z are serious rappers always have been, collage dropout was my favourite album for about two years, i played everywhere and anywhere, jay z's renegade in my top five favourite rap songs of all time, even though Eminem killed him and it a royce 5'9 track....

But i am sick to death of listening to the same **** from them, and theres ego's have outgrown there musical careers, i'm sorry but thats the truth... there heads are so big they find hard to go anywhere.... There is talk of kayne calling his next album "I AM GOD" i mean come on... And jay z still rapping about selling drugs even though his nearly 50, come on people have to agree...

This is why i said macklemore is raps savour, no ego, very good lyrics that mean something and wont have selling drugs, making money and ****ing ho's at the centre of there meaning...
