unless it starts snowing in a similar fashion to what Down and Antrim experienced last Thursday and Friday, then the chances of snow showers sticking at this time of year are almost none during daylight hours. We may see a dusting overnight or something slightly heavier but it will melt very, very fast early in the morning.Things have become milder in the past hour or 2, snow showers no longer sticking even when heavyish.

Did anyone watch Sky News last night? Farmers are losing loads of livestock due to the snow up North. They also reported from Isle Of Aran in Scotland, there's no phones or power due to lines down & one man hadn't heard from his wife in 4 days after she travelled to visit her family & got snowed in,the reporter loaned his mobile for them to get in contact.

Level 3 alerts until at least the weekend for the UK.

Onky east coast or will it make it anyway south?

It could make it's way south depending on the wind, it is currently coming in off the East, in order for a southerly flow it will need to change to NE flow.

Another brief covering on snow/graupel/snow grains here.

    2.2c DP 0.0c atm.

I see Dublin AP reporting Cbs observed at 1430. Good news! :)

Yeah saw some over Irish sea myself in the sunny breaks!
Looks quieter on radar now though.

Went for a walk here in Ongar around lunchtime for an hour and I'd say it snowed/graupelled for 50 out of 60 minutes. The odd thing though is that during the 10 minutes it didn't snow, the sun came out and there was real warmth in it so I think because of that the ground is so much warmer than it would be in Dec/Jan/Feb hence the snow not lying on impact. The longer days will also adversely affect us this evening.

Still snowing now. Overall I haven't seen this much continuous falling wintry precipitation in one day since Dec 2010...shame it's in the wrong month!:(

Graupel was covering the ground at one point- just slush now though, D7.

Can see these intermittent light/moderate showers maybe weakening even further before intensifying in the late afternoon/evening. Remember we have a good ENE flow, and 850s alternating between -9 and -11. I'd be highly surprised if I didn't see at least an inch tonight. Wind seems to have calmed down a bit too and that can only be a good sign

Heavy graupel shower here in Cork.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,393 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Agreed, even better snowfall conditions develop overnight and may persist first half of tomorrow's daylight hours, weak upper low forming overhead will decrease the current shear that is keeping the streamers rather low-topped (therefore weak). Already signs of more robust development near nw England in Irish Sea. North Leinster most likely to see any accumulation. Will re-assess for possible forecast updates around 8 pm.

How come these snow showers are getting across the Country to Galway, forecast said we would have the best of the weather but we have had showers of light hail, looking at the radar it looks like it might get worse here.

At this time of the year, they also get energy from the sun overland so not dying out altogether.
They'd want to be pretty heavy overnight to do the same.

Mt says no snow for Wicklow/wexford tonight.

What's with the precip missing out on wicklow/kildare/carlow areas? See Met radar.

Full on blizzard here in Carlow at the moment.

Visibility is down to about 50 meters and deteriorating.

What do you think about current shower direction? Looking at the radar it seems that the showers are mostly travelling W to E, but there is a slight ENE component to that flow maybe

Just had very heavy snow/graupel shower- left a dusting that is now melting in the sun...

It's been on the blink most of the day, raintoday doesn't have the same issue.
Obviously the British government have installed a perfectly functioning radar installation on Irish soil.
We are unable to find it nor tap into it.

Its calmed down a bit now but there are bigger flakes falling.

Fields and roads all now covered.

What are the chances of North Wicklow getting some snow over the next few days? Sorry, don't have time to look through the thread

Well I'm working outside all day with just a phone for boards but thankfully in a toasty tractor cab.
The dynamics are visible in that the breeze here is ene but the upper flow is mainly East.
Its not enough for wexford fetch currently, it was earlier(just) Arklow is catching the very edge of the shower trains (just)

Tonight will be interesting but the form horse bar a wind change is greystones north and points inland subject to local topography etc
