Two things sidelined me for the last three days. A man flu (head cold). The other was a bit odd. Woke up on Friday night with what seemed like a cramp in my calf. When I got up on Saturday morning my calf was very sore, felt like I pulled it. Was limping most of the day. Iced and foam rolled. Was much better yesterday and I was able to run on it today. Just a bit tender to touch. Don't really know what happened:confused:. An easy 7 mls this evening.

7.5 mls in Bushy this afternoon. Sent home at lunchtime because of a gas leak in the building - wahoo:D. So made the best of a glorious afternoon. Spoiled by this weather.

Legs felt tired by Friday. 7 mls per day is too much atm. Took a couple of days off. 5 mls today easy, still not great but maybe that was due to the pints last night. The plan is to build to 8 mls per day. May take more time than planned.

Can't really put my finger on it, but since I had the head cold a couple of weeks ago I'm just not enjoying the runs. Feels like I'm putting more effort in than I should be. I'll see how I am tomorrow and if I'm still feeling crap I'll ease off for a few days.

Another niggling injury had me sidelined for four days last week. this time it was a case of Bursitis (I think, all the symptoms). A lot of icing over the weekend seemed to sort it out. But I've had to re-think my training. This cycle of injuries has to stop. I just seem to be stopping/starting training, no consistency. So the new approach is just long, slow runs. Rules are:
    1. No miles faster than 9 min/mls.
    2. All runs done on time only, no checking miles done.

I think I can put aside 2 hours a day for training so that'll give me plenty of time for the long/slow approach. No races planned for the immediate future so I can afford to be patient. If nothing else it'll be an experiment to see where the long/slow approach will get me.

Good luck with that G. Sounds like a sensible approach. At least you can run and put in plenty of miles.

Last Tuesday I was 70 mins into a 90 min run when my left calf popped again.
Managed to hobble home, really p1ssed off. Sore all last week, all I could do was ice it as much as possible. I have to admit thoughts of quitting all together went through my mind a few times last week. Can't understand why my calf went again, I wasn't running any faster than 9min/ml, and was well warmed up. Was reading up on it trying to find an answer, nothing jumps out. But I did come across an article about a way of treating pulled muscles. Its about active rehab/recovery. Basically you don't sit around resting for a few weeks. Instead, when you're able to walk and stretch without pain, you start jogging gently. The theory is that by exercising the muscle you quicken recovery by breaking up the scar tissue and prompting the tissue to heal stronger. So this evening I got out for 30mins of 1min jog, 1min walk. 5mins walk to warm up and cool down. gentle stretching and foam rolling before and after. I'll continue this for a while and see how it goes.

Kinda embarrassed updating this after so long away. Basically I've been fcuked with injuries, story of my running for the last few years. But I don't think I've ever had three injuries together. Usually the problems are with my left leg, this time it was left foot and inside and outside of my right calf. Can't put my finger on what happened. If I'd running high mileage or belting out loads of intervals I could understand, but really I'd been only running slow, moderate miles.
Yesterday evening was my first time running for a few weeks. Did 30 mins of 1 min jog, 1 min walk. This evening was 2 min jog, 1 min walk for about 50 mins. Still don't think I'm 100% fixed so I'll keep this up for a while. I had plans to try run a half decent DCM this year, had a five month plan ready, but that's binned now.
Not sure if my competitive running days are over, but for now I'm happy to be a recreational jogger. ;)

Good to see you back and did wonder what had happened and feared the worst.
And don't you dare say your competitive running days are over. That's just silly but enjoy the jogging for the moment. It's great to be back out there in whatever form as long as you're not in pain.

    Mon 28th Jul

    Tues 29th Jul
    60 mins.

Its been a fun month. A stress fracture scare turn out to be a calf tendon strain. Just as that was recovering I picked up achilles tendinopathy. Had this a couple of years ago so know how to deal with it. But to add to my woes I've also picked up planter fasciitis in my left foot. This is a recurring issue which I've had to deal with before. If this wasn't bad enough I was walking down the stairs in my bare feet last Saturday evening. A carpet tac must have come loose and was sticking up. I put my foot on it and it caused a inch long gash on my heel. It bleed so bad I though I'd need a stitch, but no way was I going to attend A&E on a Saturday night. Managed to stop the bleeding and clean it up. Its healing OK, sore when I walk on it but I can manage to run without too much pain, just stings a bit.
Training over the last couple has been about slowly building up again. Up to one hour easy four times a week. So far so good;)
I'll take tomorrow off, hopefully the heel will heal :pac: quickly.

    Mon 4th Aug
    5.25 mls

    Tues 5th Aug
    5.09 mls

    Wed 6th Aug
    5.35 mls

Had to take a few days off last week to let the cut on my heel mend. It kept bleeding after running on it. Still having problems with my foot and achilles tendon but managing to get the runs in. Not sure if I'll run the Frank Duffy 10 mile in a few weeks, will make a decision closer to the date.

    Tues 16th Sept
Just an update about nothing:( Still having problems with injuries. Now its a tendon in my lower calf. I've tried a few runs over the last few weeks but don't get very far. Some evenings I was able to run a couple of miles with no pain but the following evening the pain would start after a mile or so. I could probably run with the pain as its not a show stopper but I reckon it would just get worse in time. When it happens I can still feel it for 24hrs later but then its gone, until I try run again.
I've started doing core strengthening exercises and the job has me running up and down stairs all day so hopefully when I get back running it won't be too tough.
I decided to take a full month off and hopefully the total rest will sort it out.
A DNS for the Frank Duffy 10 mile, same for the half and the DCM:(. From now on I'll enter races at the last minute.

    Tues 7th Oct
    4.42mls in 38:29. Avg 8:43

    Wed 8th Oct
    4.52mls in 39:26. Avg 8:44

My first real runs in weeks. Felt great. The last couple of weeks were spent on a walk/jog program, slowly building the jog distances after a few weeks off with the injury.
Was suppose to start back Monday but had to go to a removal straight after work so by the time I got home and fed, I was falling asleep.
This evenings run was the same loop as last nights except in the opposite direction and yet the garmin gives a .1 distance difference. Don't trust your garmins folks.
Much of the same for the rest of the week.

    Sat 11th Oct
    6.03mls in 50:37. Avg 8:24.

Took Thursday off. Friday same loop as Tuesday.
Ran over to Bushy this morning and did a few laps on the flat. Felt good and the legs were fine until the last half mile when I got a sharp pain on the inside of my left calf. Slowed immediately and it disappeared but a bit paranoid at even the slightest pain. This has happened before with no consequences but taking tomorrow off to be sure. Part of my new approach is to give myself more rest days and forget chasing weekly mileage. Looking back on old training diaries I ran better with no real plan, ran each day as I felt, resting more and a general relaxed approach to training. So be it;)
