You not test the calves in the pins itself? What we have always done, just bring in a pallet etc and get them tight in a corner. Our current vet is very good at testing thankfully, does it right the 1st time and moves quickly through animals. Had ours back at the start of the month, clear again thankfully, about 10yrs since we last went down, and I can think of no worse spring to have gone down in and be stuck with extra stock!

cant as have to move cows from each slatted bay through the calving pens to get to the crush, so put all calves in end bay and tested there which
was fine , just cows goes go mad when they cant see calves and calves get stressed too, getting calves back and cleaned pens after cows plough through them is a pain

Vet 2 hrs late, I'm sure that's the last time they'll test for you. I guarantee they are never late for the factory

he was at a C section which was fine, just the office never called me, i had to call them and then they didnt even know it was a section, just a call out, if i had known it was a section i would have had rough idea of time meself, also there is 4 ves in practice, felt like saying send another one as i had taken half day off work

Just finished TB reading - all well thank God, now hopefully we can get rid of the 3 bloody bulls with horns we inherited here, free up what they've left of the grass and get on with life.

Its about time we as farmers demanded that the fiasco that is herd test is re visited. It makes absolute no sense in my view that I test today, my neighbor tests in 3 months time and another 3 months after that and so on.

Your right it is a bit all over the place, but sure it's a real money spinner and will be slow to be done away with or changed. Your man (can't think of his name) that writes the beef column in the Farming Indo is always giving out about it!

I hate the herd test, not because of the work but the stress it puts on animals. I could guarantee that I will loose an animal or two in the days after the herd test. It is probably a mix up of being too busy testing to keep proper eye on the stock during testing days and also the intense stress on the animals. Never had a reactor during the herd test which makes all the worse.

Couldn't agree more Bob especially in cases like ourselves that are finishing cattle and so they will be examined again in a few months in the factory.

For the majority of our stock they are tested 2 months before slaughter and it seems such a waste and then limited action is taken against TB in known hot spots.

Ah right, didn't think about the case for sucklers, calves in theirown pins fairly quickly with us dairyfolk. I guess cattle handling is one big bonus we have over beef animals, they tend to be alot more use of being handled!

More importantly, why do we need Vets to carry out the test. It's monkey work to jab them twice and then measure a pair of lumps. If there were some other crowd doing it you wouldn't be waiting for a vet who's in the middle of a section that morning.

    Some rain last night.
Was raining when I was going to bed near twelve, was up twice as one of the girls wasn't well. 2:30 and 4:30 and it was hammering rain both times.
We don't need another summer of ground being unable to travel without tracking badly :(

Heavy ground here is as wet as it was in Feb.

    cheer up y'all
    Met Eireann
    Tonight

Turning cold; lowest temperatures 1 to 4 degrees Celsius, giving slight grass frost in the midlands, east and south. hr.gif

    Tomorrow

On Friday morning, showers will soon become widespread, turning heavy in places, and with an increasing risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms up to late evening. Winds veering northwest to north will become strong and gusty in most areas and it will feel cold throughout. Highest temperatures only 7 to 10 degrees Celsius, well below normal for late April.

    Outlook

It will be cold on Friday night and the last of the showers will ease off. A ground frost will develop as temperatures fall to between 0 and 3 degrees. Some mist will form too as winds will be very light.

Saturday will be a bright day with just a few showers mainly along coastal parts. It will be cold at first on Saturday night, but then a band of rain will move into the northwest overnight.

There will be outbreaks of rain on Sunday but also some bright spells. Highs of 10 to 13 degrees in moderate to fresh westerly winds.
It will be another chilly night on Sunday with a touch of frost in eastern parts.

The cool and unsettled weather will continue into next week, with spells of rain. The nights will be very cold too with sub-zero temperatures and mainly northerly wind

Just reading all the doom and gloom here and decided to add a bit to it:rolleyes:.

The last hogget lambed here yesterday .
    Scanned wit twins .

She lambed the first lamb on her own but was making little effort with the second .

Gave her plenty of time as dont like handling hoggets as they are so tight .

Eventually seen a tail so had to take the lamb .
After taking the second lamb i felt another leg deep down so i let her clean off the lambs and push the third one out herself but this one had a head back .
    Took him aswell .

Three huge lambs and a healthy hogget .
Mixed up colostrum as she only had enough for two .
Went over last night to check on everything and feed them again and found one had stumbled into a bucket of water head first .
Didnt have to worry about fostering one off today
