Nice evening in west Clare. The land is not yet as wet as it was in February so thats a reason for optimism.

How old do calves have to be before they can be done for blackleg?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,701 ✭✭✭moy83

Do they have to be done at 10 days?

Or can we dose & vaccinate at the same time later on?

Lost a calf a few years ago with blackleg despite them being vaccinated.

things are looking up- a bit- had milking done and 3 bulls rang and delivered by 9 am , also sourced some pit silage, will keep me going for a few days, let out rest of stock....

yea weather not too bad apart from few April showers (some of hail) got 8 bales of me neighbour, he said not sure what they like as couple years old, opened them and its like hay, nearly blew away, cows munching away at it, one more week, one more week, keep telling meself that

Having not quite got the hang of Irish weather, I just managed to get the cattle out for their brief daily reunion with grass... straight into the first cold shower of the day.

Ten days is the minimum age a calf can be done for the dose to be effective.
(So you can leave them to be done slightly older if you like)
Second dose is 6 weeks after the first dose. Recommended in areas where there is a history of blackleg.

Ya wouldn't want to be relying on accuweather for the long term forecast. A few days ago they were giving it to take up and now they saying more of this feckin rain.

You know the fodder situation is bad when you see a chap mowing his lawn and you're tempted to stop and ask him for the clippings:eek:

Thankfully grass here is coming on in leaps and bounds now, especially in the last 10 days, with about 28 days grass ahead of the cows.
Feeding very little silage now as they're just not interested.
    There's about a span left.

Took this pic this morning. This is that paddocks 2nd grazing this year. Its had about 3k gallons of good slurry earlier in the year and 2.5 bags of nitrogen about 3 weeks ago.
Cows are out day and night.
