There must be honest people in Oughterard. Saw a swb defender pick up left unattended with a single round bale of hay in the back.

Yea I'm fully irrigated with reliable water. Yea it would have been pretty bad, rain has come now so it's not so bad but effects will go on into winter. To buy silage is fair expensive, €60 for a round bale. I've mates that had to dry off in early feb down here which would be rather early. They have irrigation but it comes out of the river so when there is no rain there not allowed to pump basically. It's a great country to work in, I'm here two and a half years and loving it.

Started breeding heifers yesterday. Put on scratch cards and ai'd what was around. Today first real day of ai and 20% served today. We will estrumate anything not in served by next Monday. First time to use scratch cards we always used kmars on heifers going well so far. God, cattle love a bit of heat. Cows well up also.
We will start cow ai on Monday .............love this time of year!!

On that subject, do you ever synchronise cows? Or is it just heifers people do that with?
Never done this kind of thing, so not up to speed,
Stock bull came to a bad end, and was thinking if trying AI for this year at least.

Last cow calved jus over a month.
    Thinking of synchronising ?
    Suckler cows that is.

    Does it make sense?
What kind of conception rate could I expect at first service?

    TIA

20% on the 1st day!!! Started serving cows afew days ago, had a good few in heat over the last 2 weeks but not too many this week, so only 2 done yet! Have 2 more for the morning though. We have the bulk of the older heifers done, as alot were from the summer and autumn 11 and would have ended up too big by now. Last years spring heifers out on the other side of the farm, still on 1kg/day meal and definately some under weight (afew from May/June in fairness). My dad is saying to hold out AI'ing them for another few weeks, I would prefer to press on with the bigger ones at least, and keep on feeding whatever is too small. Might just land them in a paddock closer to the cattle crush myself one of the days and say they broke out ha, and we might as well start serving now :P

Sorry 20% in first 2 days. just lucky to hit them at that part of cycle. If we started tomorrow they would need est to be ai'd next week.

My philosophy is if they come bulling bull them. You are calving too long as you say yourself, if you delay heifers it will never change. The guys getting really good 3&6 week calving figures are all front loading their heifers. If they are too small now sell as winter bulling heifers.
