Had a farmer bend my ear today with his theory as to why beef prices have gone up lately. He recons that there were thousands of tonnes of beef being brought in here from eastern europe every week for the last several years and it was being mixed with irish beef and labelled as irish beef and exported again. Since the horse meat scare, factories aren't doing this and they are far short of the amount of meat that they need to meet export contracts - so they are forced to pay higher prices to get the cattle in.

He recons that we should all be lobbying ministers to make sure that these factories can't bring in beef from eastern europe again and label it as Irish meat.

Interesting theory. Wonder how much of it is true? ;)
Was told last year from a lad that worked in a MAJOR beef factory in the west that he seen imported meat been sent back out labelled as irish:mad:

Had a similar response from vet re tb test.
Test was listed for Oct rang him several times eventually got a call from dvo a week before Christmas threatening 5% cut to sfp .
Rang vet again still too busy (6 vet practice ) so contacted another vet and signed test over to him. Rang dept man back he wasn't happy that the other vet lost the test ?????
The same practice had been doing our work for 35+ years
So what has changed,is it a next generation that has taken over and that does not give two damns about there loyal(35 years) customers.I know ofa practice ,son has now taken over from father and just not care, losing customers left right and centre. All he can do is going around bad mouthing the loyal customers that he lost

One of the local drunks to me used to 'feel' his way home along the shopfronts on the main street. He got the nickname 'Spiderman' for his troubles! :^)

Original vets have retired ,theres an a***hole there that most farmers have told him they never want to see him on their farm again .
Theres a good vet there but he seems only interested in farms with a couple of hundred milkers.
And the rest of them do what they're told.
One of the original vets is working as a consulting vet for an agri supplier hes very good if you have a problem he'll get to the bottom of it.

Have a good relationship with my vet theres more than one in the practise but I get him if at all possible. Its the one area where mutual respect is required, he doesent save them all but he always give it his best shot and I always follow his directions to the letter.

Not allot, we are only importing for the last few years around 50k tons (30k tons from UK and NI) so 20k from elsewhere.

My Uncle and I lost a calf last week, about 12 hours after a difficult birth which required all my strength and a calving jack to get out. The calf seemed ok at first but it later became clear that it was probably damaged in the birth a was going to die.

I should pay more attention. We turned calves out yesterday without any hesitation. Local forecast looked good and weather was mild.
