yip, Probably one of the easiest diseases to spot and treat. So simple that I taught she may have something more complicated. Gave her a big shot of Cortisone to reduce any swelling on the brain and an anti-biotic to kill the infection which is usually easy enough depending on how far it has advanced, probably too late in my case.

That sounds like something a cow of mine got years ago. Vet said it was sunstroke at the time. Going round in circles and pawing the ground.

Right I'm of to inspect the chaorlaois day old calf that was supposed to be an Aberdeen Angus. Anyone know if its possible for a red chaorlaois cow and black Angus bull to produce a pure chaorlaois calf

Got back onto vet again to tell him no sign of this calf improving, and to describe current symptoms , response ah just one of these calves who not thriving and poss has internal infection, will take bit work, now I know it will take a bit of work, who the fcuk has kept calf alive last 3 days, I just wanted to let him know that his last prognosis and treatment were not working, is it just me or would anyone else expect a better response from member of vet practice that has been coming to this farm for 20 years,

We actually had a calf quite similar to what you describe. He would only suck when he was given the injection to stimulate him. Does your calf stand 'mazing' looking off into space? Or looking into a wall?

The calf born with his intestines hanging out died this morning. Relieved in a way as he was in serious pain last night. Talking to the animal disposal crowd. They say they were never as busy. Depressing to be throwing a fine limousin bull up on a pile of dead calves.

Sort of ,with hump like he out of it, will suck when I push him to udder but all he takes wouldn't fill a cat and he acts like its the hardest job in world, what did you do with your calf

We had to put him down. Was a hard decision but we put the mother & him into a field/paddock area with a yard next to the shed. He promptly fell into the gripe. Then we shut them into the yard and he stood in a corner looking at the wall. He wasn't blind and had no temperature, heartrate normal etc. We just figured he was brain damaged as the cow had an abnormally large water bag that year and she was HUGE before calving but round like a barrel instead of slung. He wouldn't suck unless we forced him up to the cow and only then after he got the injection, he'd drink life-aid until it came out of his ears though.

Thought you were going to say that, funny thing this girl was fine for the first week and half, it's only few days she gone this way,

When the vet was out first had she a temperature? Because if she was normal at first then she wouldn't just go bonkers in the head. It sounds more like a bit of a hurt from your previous posts, plus it would fit that her side could be sore if she's only half-heartedly sucking. Did you try her with the injection for stimulating the sucking reflex?

Beginning to think that's what it is me self (bruised ribs from puck) calf squirms every time cow moves, suppose just patients and tlc and see how it goes

Going bonkers here me self ( two boys running rings around me) and I was normal well sort off this am :D

Mention that to the vet and see what he advises, prob an anti-inflammatory or some reliever for her.

I think all farmers are bonkers, hair is going white here today.
Literally. I'm painting my entire room white and I'm not very good at doing ceilings without drips....laptop is turning white...floor is turning white.....door handle is going white.....cat is going white...:pac:

Rang vet again still too busy (6 vet practice ) so contacted another vet and signed test over to him. Rang dept man back he wasn't happy that the other vet lost the test ?????
The same practice had been doing our work for 35+ years

Had a farmer bend my ear today with his theory as to why beef prices have gone up lately. He recons that there were thousands of tonnes of beef being brought in here from eastern europe every week for the last several years and it was being mixed with irish beef and labelled as irish beef and exported again. Since the horse meat scare, factories aren't doing this and they are far short of the amount of meat that they need to meet export contracts - so they are forced to pay higher prices to get the cattle in.

He recons that we should all be lobbying ministers to make sure that these factories can't bring in beef from eastern europe again and label it as Irish meat.

Interesting theory. Wonder how much of it is true? ;)

Same all over on that one I think.

was just outside there, its fooking freezing, was snowing at milking time, sun was shining at 3pm when i was letting cows in from field

Sounds plausible enough to me . If they were throwing horses into the mix I dont see why they wouldnt chance european beef . Is the european beef much cheaper than ours though ? I could understand them taking the chance with the horse because of a huge price difference to them , but would there be enough money out of the foreign beef to take the same chance on ?

Lovely warm day today here. We went for a 5 mile walk before dinner. Was outside in a t shirt putting together a polytunnel till 4pm. It got cold since then and we had a few drops of rain - but no sign of snow yet.
