I suspect that's badly worded. That said, voda do have sure signal over WiFi so maybe that's it?
Allowing voice calls on a plane would be a really really bad idea.

It's satellite internet, it's not exactly cheap to provide. Most hotels charge more than 10 for 24 hours internet.

I'm betting Norwegian won't get you to New York and back for 500 quid.

I wouldn't be comparing it to rip-off hotels!!

I've always found it very ironic that high end hotels charge a fortune for free wifi, while cheap hostels normally offer it for free!!! Showing that it is jsut a scam to rip off business travellers.

Irish Rail and pretty much every bus company in Ireland offer free wifi.

Yes this is over 3g rather then satellite, but the costs aren't substantially different.

Norweigan offer free wifi, using the exact same gear and for same costs as Aerlingus have. And yes, Norweigan do fly to New York and you can easily find flights between Norway and New York for less then €500.

And I'm not even saying they should offer free wifi like Norweigan, just that it should be cheaper. €2 per hour or €10 for 24 hours is more reasonable.

Seems to work just fine on Norweigan with their free wifi. Also works fine on Irish Rail and most bus companies with their free wifi.

Buying one account and giving other family members won't work, as when you login on the second device the first device disconnects.

Might work if you used a mifi device to share out the connection.

Norwegian offer free wifi on all their B738 European flights. The New York flights are on the B787 or leased A340's.
"Norwegian is proud to be the first airline to offer high-speed broadband on flights within Europe. Per January 2013, 51 aircraft have WiFi. By March 2013, Norwegian will feature in-flight WiFi in our entire 737-800 fleet. "

Nothing about Wi-Fi on there........Personally I would be thinking that wi-fi antenna are going to be pretty standard on aircaft coming out of the factory within the next 3-7 years.

Ok, fair enough they don't have it yet on their long haul fleet, the long haul routes were only recently started.

But the fact that Norweigan can do it for free on their cheap short haul routes, while Aer Lingus charges €20 for it on their transatlantic routes says it all.

You'd expect it to be free for medium and long haul and pay as you go on short haul, given the economics of it all.

As I stated...I am surprised the NO don't have it on their longhaul. But the technology/equipment for both types is different...hence the difference in cost.

Ground based receiver aerials vs Satellite based comms.......

I too think the price set by the service provider (T-Mobile) is a bit much but the 2 services are different. Not 'apples and oranges' different, perhaps Pink Lady vs Tesco 1 euro a bag apples?

Actually, they are both using the same type of technology.

Both are using KU-Band Geo-Synchronise satellites.

They are using different suppliers, Row 44 in Norweigans case, Aero Mobile in Aer Lingus case, but it is all the same setup and type of technology and should therefore cost about the same.

Actually Norweigans system might actually be more expensive, as it also does Video on Demand and satellite TV in addition to wifi and phone.

The Ground based receivers you mention only exist in the US. No such service exists in Europe, all airline broadband systems in Europe are satellite based.

    ....

    Ah-ha said the blind man....

When I was onboard their Malaga service last week it showed T-Mobile.de as the service provider. My phone did pick up the Aeromobile network...(I didn't connect however)

70 cent for sending the SMS and €6.15 for the MB data. SMS are free to receive. Calls to be €2.99 a minute to make and receive if and when. These are vat included prices for Vodafone.

02 SMS are free to receive also. They don't do data.

    Ex vat is €2.43 calls
    57 cent SMS
    And €5 per MB

o2 UK will work but the pricing is not from any plan or included minutes. Its roughly international basic charges at the higher end, so use that at as a guide.
