I heard on other airlines the on board WIFI was terribly slow. Certainly not good enough for HD Youtube or anything high bandwidth.....
I think the onboard Wi-Fi is designed for emails and SMS rather than some teenager watching youtube videos.

I wonder what the IP address would be. As some sites are region specific.... ie. RTE RealPlayer and Netflix Ireland.

I'd say it'll be like Bus wifi, video streaming is blocked to preserve bandwith

EI have had power outlets in all A330's since the cabin upgrade in 2008/2009

Whaat?! If only I knew that before I flew!

The Aer Lingus website had stated that they would have this up and running by March. Now they are saying May. Anyone know if they will be phasing in longhaul before then. I am travelling to Orlando on 20th April and would and would be delirah if it was available by then.

Anyone got any update on this?

Thinking of flying to boston and would be an excellent added bonus.

Rolling out this month, €10 for 1 hour, €20 for 24 hours. Or so I've heard.

I thought it was active, but now it says June on the Aer Lingus website?

Looks like it is just going to be useful for sending sms doing email and maybe doing Skype calls
TBH I always download many many youtube films on to my hard disks to watch at later times .So when I cant get on the net. Also some good films usualy contervertal get taken down so I grab them so I always have copy I got some 500 GB of you tube films about 50% I never even got to look at yet .
I am starting to get a large collection of external hard disks for my laptop for back ups .
Trust the cloud no way they can switch you off the cloud and you lose everything

Also accessing these systems to stay under 10mb it requires turning off all sorts the internet updating systems the virus update systems

Many laptops configured for normal use can use more than 5 mb just to say hello to the net update everything and so forth

Naw best is leave inflight internet to business users who their boss pays those silly prices to talk to them as they wing it across the pond

If I am on those flights I will probably watch my 250gb plus of films that I still need to see

    Derry

There have, as expected, been teething issues with the mod. They won't be switching it on officially until they work through all the snags. They were finding certain aircraft attaining poor data speeds while others were good.

Is it on unofficially ? Flew a month ago and could connect to the LAN but no IP address.

A boards user posted from an EI flight a few weeks ago.

Flying next week so would be handy.

It has been on unofficially over the past couple of months for testing. It is definitely switched off at the moment though. It's actually an issue that affects all airlines using this particular system, so it's in Panasonic's hands to resolve.

Any updates on the wifi situation? I'm flying in july so I'm thinking there's a good chance it will be in operation by then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,818 ✭✭✭donvito99

AFAIK it has not gone to plan, as regards installation it seems.

That's unfortunate! But I shouldn't be too disspointed- I was purely excited about the novelty of the whole thing!

Any update on whether it's working? i am flying to US again this week on business and would love to be able to work from the plane

Flew home with them from Boston Yesterday and nothing, I tweeted them also and they said there still in testing.

you have a source for that ? because they've gone from saying it would roll out in March to not committing to any time frame.

I think we can trust kona on this point. We already have evidence of Wi-Fi working months ago, then it encountered a problem so it was stopped while EI worked on the problem. I doubt EI safety/engineering have been ignoring the issue over the last 3-4 months. So I would expect it to be operational when they have re-tested it with the fix to the safety issue that 'grounded' it.

EI have carried out 2 inflight test sessions in the last 3 weeks.
If the results of these are positive then we could see Wi-Fi enabled on their A330's by the end of August. If the results are not positive we may have to wait for an engineering fix to be carried out over the Winter.

This system is very new and EI are essentially proving it for Panasonic. Lufthansa and Ethiad are currently trialing it as well.

Ok I'm assuming you work there, you little tease.

Soon enough for my flight next week or a bit longer?

I was able to access the login portal back in April but couldn't get an IP address.

Once they are happy with the testing then the aircraft require new antennas fitted. This will take some time as understandably the aircraft are at max utilisation for the summer. Most likely will be completed during A checks or if scheduled for a long turnaround back at base.

It won't be on for your trip. You were able to access the portal as the wifi was enabled on certain flights but then disabled when it was found to be interferring with comms.

Glad to hear end in sight. Who pays for this inordinate delay re roll out? It's basically a summer gone with bath tubs riding shot gun on the roofs of the 330s and no wifi to boot!

If Aer Lingus are the guinea pigs they're probably getting it for free as the supplier will want a reference customer.

Isn't it strange that it affect comms ? Doesn't this stuff have to get certified first?

Radio waves are going to interfere with comms either way, that's why you're supposed to turn off your phone on board to stop it searching for signals, the key is to find a way that the frequencies set on the comms panel don't interfere with the frequency the dish is transmitting at. IE, making sure the dish changes frequency to a new one everytime the pilots switch frequency and that the two new frequencies don't interfere.

As for testing, it'll have been tested in a lab and now it's being field tested. It can be tested with PAX on board as it's not safety critical and can just be switched off if it starts acting up during the test phase.

It's certified but there was a minor snag, aer lingus want it 110% correct.

Minor snag? VHF1 range utterly destroyed? I think you can grade that to serious snag and not acceptable .

I don't know where your getting your info but it wasn't vhf1. And it wasn't on all aircraft.
