Really? Talking about academy players is too much now? The schools thread is already a bag of ****e and now this thread could get derailed because people are talking about moving young players around the provinces? Christ...this is a forum isn't it? Free speech and all that.
D14 didnt say anything about talking about academy players. They said talking about people who're still in school and the schools thread is what it is because it was "a bag of ****e" in its previous incarnation

Either way...I don't understand this obsession to hush any talk about young/schools players. People are interested and want to know which players to look out for coming through the system.

why isn’t Patterson getting a chance ahead of O sullivan Patterson has shown his ability in his sub cameo and for A while O sullivan is just a basic 9

    According to whom?

    You? Internet stranger...

Or Leinster coaches with supplementing video footage, nutritional info, gym stats and a range of s&c data. Who also personally know both players and how they fit into the plan

I think I know whose opinion I value more lol.

Also I've been in queues that have gone on longer than Pattersons time in the Academy so far. He will get his chances.

I watched the recent A match in Thomond. He had some exciting breaks but he also made some very basic errors and put his team under pressure.

He had a 13 minute cameo against the Dragons when Leinster were 35 points ahead, hard to read much into it. Hopefully he gets another appearance during the 6N but he'd be far better served from getting some full matches under his belt and being able to actually develop.

Patterson also shown his weaknesses in the recent Leinster A game, he was pretty lucky to make the academy last season, where he was also behind Hugh for Ireland u20.

Both 9's need gametime to develop their decision making, unfortunately they won't be getting that in the AIL this season due to leinster's injury situation.

David Aspil trainning with the Leinster squad - whats his status? I was disappointed when none of the munster, connacht or Ulster academies picked him up - then again he may have turned down some offers I don't know

Playing AIL with Mary's, coaching with The High School as well while in college I believe.

As has been said already he's playing AIL, coaching and in college. Turned down an offer from Ulster I believe because it just wasn't viable regarding pay, travel, education or anything really.

I'm not sure the mary's, alleged, pay was really that big a factor more that the academy contract from Ulster was an amount that wouldn't really enable him to move up but if he stayed down here the travel would mean he couldn't go to college as well so it basically became a choice of join the ulster academy with lots of travel or stay with mary's, play ail, go to college and coach and he chose the latter.

Can Anyone confirm if dan Sheehan has been dropped by leinster? Looked like a good prospect and would be a good coup for ulster

He was in the sub-academy, not sure if he'll get a full academy deal.

Don't think Ulster will be looking to sign any hookers to the academy though, especially given the fact McKee wasn't offered a place in the sub-academy there despite being a decent prospect

He was training with the full academy most of the year and trained several times with the senior squad. Sheehan may have been released as he played with Irish students at the weekend, which was notable. If they have released him it's very interesting as he has been playing very well for Trinity, they have McKee, Sean Molony(UCD) and Declan Adamson(Clontarf) in the sub-academy. So maybe one of them have impressed them enough to move Sheehan on, along with Kelleher's obvious progression and potential.

Ulster didn't want McKee at hooker, they wanted him to try to continue at LH Prop. They have Claytan Milligan in their sub-academy, who they rated above McKee and Tom Stewart at u18 level who is also very highly rated.

But given McKee's progress I wouldn't be surprised if they went back after him.

Likely Leinster Academy class for next season:

    Thomas Clarkson(DUFC/TH Prop)
    John McKee(Old Bevledere/Hooker)
    Charles Ryan(UCD/Lock)
    Martin Moloney(Old Belvedere/Backrow)
    Cormac Foley(St. Marys/Scrumhalf)
    Liam Turner(DUFC/Centre-Wing)

    Hawkshaw? He looks promising.

Can anyone explain the reason Liam Turner isn't in the Leinster Academy but is being picked ahead of one of the hottest properties in U20's rugby in recent years - Sean French?

It's something that has really gotten me confused that McNamara is selecting Turner ahead of French for the 20's - has Turner been doing something in training to catapult him ahead of French? Alternatively had Turner done something to not gain the selection of Peter Smyth for the Lesinter Academy.

The whole situation has got me confused.

Turner is outperforming him would be my read of the situation, and Turner not being in the leinster academy doesn't mean much.

Which would lead to the question was French overhyped? If Turner is training and playing better than him why was he not called into the Leinster Academy?

Because there is no rush? Turner will join the Leinster academy next season.

Leinster have a glut of centres in the academy at the moment. Not including Hawkshaw, they already had the O'Brien triplets, Gavin Mullin and Frawley who has played centre a bit as has Jack Kelly. There's simply no need for another centre in there right now until they can reassess at the end of this season.

I would imagine Turner will be brought into the fold this summer on the basis of his 6N showings as well as the fact that JOB, COB and Kelly are finished in the academy as well as Frawley being a likely candidate for promotion (if he hasn't been already).

On a sidenote, I've been very impressed with Hawkshaw's general play for the U20 side. However, I see he's marked down as only being 5'9". Is he really that small and is that going to hinder him?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 67 ✭✭scrummieman

Yeah he is that small, Turner is 5'8 not 6'0 as he is listed.

For both their lack of height may hinder them at the top level.

Turner and Hawkshaw must be the shortest yet stockiest centres out there ha

good to see their height isn't held against them.. if they are centres long term, who knows.

Obviously they were products of a different time but BOD and Darce fared fairly well given their short statures
