Saying that auto licence holders shouldn't be on the road is utterly fatuous.

Very true, but it seems a bit silly to limit your options right from the start. ;)

Edit: as a matter of interest, are there any mainstream cars that are not available in auto?
    Just curious.

Couldn't get access to a manual for the test. Long story.

Mazda 3 and 6 MPS were only ever available in manual.

I though some people might like this:

    Land Rover defender
    1:8.5 Scale
    3500 parts, 7 motors.
    Realistic steering
Disc Brakes on all 4 wheels.
    5+R Sequential gearbox
    High/low range transfer box.

You can buy instruction for this thing and here is the full review of it with very detailed build. Its a shame i don't have enough parts for this and it will cost me a fortune to get the rest. :(

When this will get 10k votes, there is a small chance it might be done as an official set.

WTF is up with that Accord though? And did Aoife and yer man get it on in the end??? :D

A good few cars were only manual, many diesels from brands were only manual. Diesel sucks though.

I wouldnt call the MPS mainstream but the Mazda 6 did come in Auto, alot of sport cars didnt come in auto, like the S2000 or the Civic type R but with double clutch technology things are changing, soon I would say auto will be the status quo and you will have to order manual as an optional extra.

I presume that seeing as the manual gearbox is an ancient and proven technology, it will always be cheaper to produce than any form of double clutch gearbox?? So will continue to be supplied on 'normal cars'

Entirely apart from the manual vs auto debate or even the "i'd love a flappy paddle gearbox" debate.

What is the benefit to the car manufacturer of this kind of set up? Is it that it ups the desireability of these models and a premium can be charged or are there mechanical/engineering reasons they are fitted? Ie. CO2, mpg, longevity. Or is it just a case of we can, so we do?

An example of this would be the push button start in my car, it works no better or worse than turning a key in an ignition, so why do they bother?

Another example would be electronic handbrakes.

I'd be interested to hear peoples thoughts or knowledge on this.

They are getting lower CO2 and better mpg out of modern Auto's in the official tests, so that's probably what's driving that.
Push button starts are cool, so why not?
And electronic handbrakes are just a convenience for people. Don't bother releasing any handbrake, let the machine do it.

I do not like electronic handbrakes. They're useless for control and if the battery is flat how do you move the car?

I was in the same position two weeks ago. It felt terrible having no car. But at least you have cash and are in the driving seat as your not trying to trade in a car to a dealer. Congrats best of luck with finding a replacement.:)

That's a great way of summing it up alright. My last car was really my first car to own myself and first car to sell. When I sold it I was delighted as I got a good price for it and knew the car didnt suit my needs. But then when I saw It being driven away I felt terrible I was Carless and felt all this uncertainty. But ultimately I made the right choice and I'm very happy with my new car granted I only have it a week.

The guy that bought it seemed as if he was going to mind it. He had a 97 astra van with 300k miles on it. The only reason he bought my astra van was that his was so rusted it wouldn't pass the doe. I think he owned the 97 since 2000. So doesn't change his cars to often.

Looks like my return to normal tyres which was supposed to be tomorrow could be postponed until next week :( They got the front 2 delivered 2 weeks ago but the rears are supposed to be in tomorrow but there's been no confirmation yet.
