I must say the system looks very potent on present satellite imagery.

You can see the small system just to our southwest gathering strength

    http://sat24.com/en/eu?ir=true

A short period of Storm Force winds likely for the Galway Bay region this afternoon and spreading into the midwest.

Sustained winds to 50kts combined with some heavy precipitation

    I will upgrade to a phase 2

Norweigen HIRLAM barely scraping gale force on the coast so it could still turn out to be nothing

I'm working down by the coast so I might take a walk around Salthill at lunch time if conditions warrant it, hard to believe there's anything on the way when its just about the nicest morning we've had all month!

That Hirlam looks plain wrong, a simple look at the satellite tells one that.

    A classic now-casting situation ;)

I'm looking forward to the first few visible images of system.

IT appears to be showing a definite closed circulation something that many models have shown it to have lost by now.

The lack of obs in the area is annoying.

http://www.galwaycityweather.com/ which is run by Lumi(fellow boardsie) will give you some live data even though it's a little bit away from Galway bay.

    No more reports?

System looks poised to bring a really severe period of weather to western regions.

    Satellite representation is excellant.

Thanks to everyone for the heads up on this. Much appreciated - all outside jobs done and everything put away. Still nice blue sky and sunny with a bit of a breeze - nothing major yet.

I'm in Galway and I feel I should ask whether todays event really warrants a Level 2. It'll be blustery but we is hardy bucks down here.

Adding lightning reports to this thread to keep all info in one area

2 sferics recorded just of the coast of Galway

Still a lovely day in Galway, bit of a breeze but dry and sunny so far. Would agree with sponge that a level 2 seems a bit over the top but anyway we'll see how it unfolds. Great to have some active weather for a change anyway, still hard to believe its going to get stormy in a few hours!

Mace and Valentia ( uniquely) were gusting above 40kt in the 11z and in the 12z Valentia hit 48Kt while Mace hit 46kt and Cork joined the 40Kt club just about.

89km/h gust at Valentia, Kerry. 85km/h gust at Mace Head, Galway - midday

Max gust on Sunday was 48Kt in Sherkin I think so we have now matched Sundays max gust values.

Speaking of Nowcasting the Forecast Wind input to the grid has exceeded the forecast wind input in the last 30 mins.....meaning it is already breezier than 'expected' and wind generation has already exceeded the expectations for 16Z :)

    http://www.eirgrid.com/operations/systemperformancedata/windgeneration/

Go back to sunday where a much better correlation was achieved overall. Given the lack of installed wind capacity in Galway the graph today indicates that it is notably windier than expected at this precise time somewhere else in Ireland, perhaps in the south west or Donegal..or both.

Wind has really picked up in the past 20 minutes, noticeable sustained wind now with gusts starting to get strong, off for lunch in 20 minutes so think I'll take a walk over to Salthill. Shall report on conditions there if I come across a Wifi signal!
