I watch sport for moments of pure genius, like Zlatan Ibrahimovic's goal last night against England.

An incredibly outstanding goal. The footwork from a man of his size for that goal was amazing. 5/6 steps and he was in position to attempt the overhead kick.

As good as it was, it was a fluke

I play sports and used to play a lot of sports. It's just to be able to compete against others and win is an amazing feeling. And not playing the xbox or something, it's great when it counts towards something like your team winning a cup or something. It's great to be able to say "that was me who made that try saving tackle" and it's a great feeling knowing that your team appreciate that and give you praise for it.

However, I know plenty of lads who don't play sport and I have plenty of close friends who don't. They're not viewed any differently and they don't pull any less girls that the lads who do play sports. I don't think we live in the day and age where watching football and drinking lager automatically makes a man masculine.

A friend of mine used to say that he had far too many important things going on in his head to be bothered trying to remember useless facts about sport.

That's as bad as looking down on lads that aren't interested in sport tbh.

Thought the second one was the better goal myself.

I won't deny he seemed to line it up well and went for it, but luck had a lot to do the result, imo.

Still a fantastic goal and doesn't take away that it is one of the greats, more so because only a player of his sort of height could ever carry out such a kick and make contact with a ball that could well have been 7' off the ground.

    Right.

Practically every goal in football could be classified as being a fluke.

The genius nature of it all, for me, lies in the imagination required to consider attempting it and then having the physical attributes to pull it off. The result shouldn't matter if you look at it like that.

It's not luck, it's called technique. Maybe if he had his eyes closed and just hit it, it would have been luck, but he never took his eyes off the ball and hit it perfectly. Nothing remotely lucky about it

I like sport in general, I wouldn't say I'm an avid fan of anything, but I casually watch sport. ill watch a hurling match, international rugby, Aussie Rules, American Football, the odd F1 race when I can, ill watch most sports in fact, but I cannot watch soccer. Too boring, can't understand its popularity tbh

I am into most sports and have supported teams in a variety of sports since I was a kid, once it gets into your blood you can't get it out......and i can tell withing 2 minutes of talking to someone how interested they are in sport, if it's genuine interest, a passing interest, a feigned interest or a non interest

it doesn't really matter - there are other things to talk about

In sport in general? Wouldn't some people have a deep interest in some sports and a passing or no interest in others?

The soccer is so so commercialised that it is not a sport to many. I love a world cup or euro chamnpionship. Love it. But, I find most league matches just too boring. The premiership is a soap opera to a lot of people. They don't find the action at all interesting or exciting. It's simply down to their team and the result.

Same with GAA and Rugby; you get some great games, but you also get a lot of duds. It applies to all sport. Great boxing matches and some bores. Tennis too.

I like FI and follow the stats on it, but like soccer it too can be quite boring. How I misst the 80s for F1. Cycling used to be a sport I really enjoyed, but too much cheating.

NFL is a sport I watch regularly. I love it. And you cannot beat the Superbowl.

    Good one.

I just think the soccer is ridiculously saturated. Non feckin stop. Rugby is going that way. I remember when a Leinster-Munster clash was special. Now they seem to be meeting every bloody week.

They meet about twice a season. Pretty much standard fare.

Football is saturated because the vast majority of people follow it and it's the most popular sport in Europe without a doubt.

It's fairly annoying though when the sports news, aka the soccer news, gets more air time than actual news on the radio.

It is over saturated, its everywhere, I wouldn't a majority of people watch it though, prob 60% of men, maybe 10% of women.

    When does this ever happen?

It's the most popular sport in Europe, so it gets the most airtime. I'd say 60% is a very conservative estimate too. It's everywhere because it's what the majority want. The majority is always going to be accommodated more than the minority.

Every morning I listen to that eejit Paul Collins on todayfm prattle on about soccer for about 7-8 mins, much longer than the 3-4 mins given to actual news.

I don't think 60% is conservative. Non of my friends are remotely interested, neither is anyone in my family, a quick look around here in work and its around 50-50.

I agree that its the most popular sport, but its nowhere near 70-80% of all people

Maybe another poster could verify this but I believe there are other radio stations available?

You asked when it happens, I gave you an answer, no need to get smart arsey about it.

People get so touchy when someone criticises soccer. Some like it, some don't. Get over it

I really enjoy motorsport and if there is a decent rugby match on I'll watch that too. I have zero interest in G.A.A . Secondary school was torture because that's what 90% of conversations would have consisted of.
