I would considering using something like classic shell before doing all that.

Its very close to Windows 7 underneath, and using a menu replacement hides most of the metro stuff from you.

Getting used to it now. I actually like it. Perhaps its because Ive been using a windows phone or xbox pretty much daily for the past 2 years, so im used to the metro sort of layout.

Understood and thanks. But if I wanted to revert have you any advice?

What I'm really missing is a clock app on the metro screen. Seems really silly to leave this out.

Never done it. Looks simple enough.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Restore-your-computer-from-a-system-image-backup

I much prefer a fresh install of an OS. Though I accept if you have a ton of stuff installed, setting it all back up again can take some time, especially if you've some complex stuff configured.

I think they left it out as there's one on the lock screen and also one pops up when the 'charms' menu is displaying.

they've left in calander apps, and weather apps with live details. I think it was still silly to leave out a clock app similar to these other apps.

Hmm... Will have to keep an eye out I suppose...

So still playing with it on my new (to me) tablet..

I think it's actually just Chrome that's the problem and having done some reading this seems to be the case, as IE 10 zips along. No ad blocker and no Favorites???? though is a massive oversight - yes I know you can pin them to your Start menu, but that's just ridiculous.

On the whole though it's not bad - on a tablet... on a normal laptop/desktop I still maintain it's a disaster and having to tweak it with Classic Shell/Start 8 and so on just to make it usable shouldn't be necessary - but thankfully you can just stick with Win 7 on those platforms and not be missing anything.

Oh and as a general question... how is having to relearn a load of keyboard shortcuts to get around the new OS as if we were still in the days of Win 3.1 and DOS is a good thing? Having made each iteration of Windows easier to use/manage since Win 2000, throwing that all away now is a bizzare choice.

How do you get the look and feel of Windows 3.1 ?

No problem, once WindowBlinds works for Windows 8, Windows 3 Themes will be plenty. ;)

2-finger scrolling should function. Place 2 fingers anywhere on the pad and slide up.

MS penchant for changing things for no good reason is well known. For example switching minimize to desk top from right to left of the taskbar in Windows 7.
You think that "Show Desktop" button in XP was easier to hit than the one in windows currently? Instead of having to precision my mouse over a button in the lefthand area of the screen all I have to do is move my mouse hard-over to the bottom right and poof, your mom doesnt see porn when she enters the room

Download one from the store. There are several to choose from.

I did look for the clock but found none. But I know realise I have to hit store for it to search in the store. Face palm!

Re windows media pack. I've been applying since last Saturday and it took about 6 tries to get it so keep annoying them is what I say.

Yes because the start menu and quick launch were on the left, so you spend most of your time over there. There's almost nothing you need to go to the bottom right for. Perhaps your hairy palms are causing you accuracy problem with icons. :)

Windows 8 has most likely installed a generic PS/2 mouse driver rather than the Synaptics/Alps/ELAN touchpad driver. What's the make and model of the laptop?

The mail app is driving me mad. As expected Outlook is total fooked and wont launch as my exchange account is primary one and it will not accept my password (even though I know its correct!).

But im trying to use the mail app now and all the hyperlinks in emails are dead (for instance emails with links to new posts in this thread are dead) and I have to copy and paste. Is this normal? Any way round it?

Tried it here and it works ok so yours isn't behaving right by the look of it.

You might be secretly delighted that Windows 8 makes it harder for mom to catch you watching p0rn, however...

buying a silly desktop clock in a store is a bit over the top. Now, don't get me wrong, I like me a good bare bones operating system, but that really takes the biscuit.

Sounds a bit like the old "check is in the mail" to me. :D

Their answer to system resource backlog I reckon. Easier to generate a waitlist and plough through it than allow the key generator to be inundated by a rush on requests.

Free is cool... what's the catch?

You know, there is no such thing as free lunch and I always thought a store is a retail establishment selling items to the public.

There's also free apps for iOS devices on the iTunes store and I'm sure Google Play is the same. I don't see a problem.

    No catch?

Amazon's Kindle App Store, The Google Play Store, The Apple App Store, The Microsoft Store, etc. etc. etc. all have free apps. No catches.

Freeware has been around for at least the last 40 years, if not more. Linux is a great example. People develop it, code it, put it out there, and they don't charge you a thing. It's open-source software. No catch. Piriform puts out Ccleaner, Defraggler, and other pieces of software. No catch. Mozilla created and continues to develop Firefox. No catch. I've been using Firefox for years, used it to transmit social security numbers, email accounts, passwords, dates of birth, and pretty much everything you would need to know about me to kill me and assume my identity and leave me completely broken -for years, without incident. No catch, and they haven't taken a dime from me.

Speaking of free lunch, Taco Bell was giving away free Dorito Taco Locos (..don't ask, but they are strangely tasty). No catch. Someone or something won the world series yadda yadda and Taco Bell agreed to give out free Tacos. Didn't cost me a thing. Hours later I even still appear to have not upset my stomach, which is rare with free or near-free fast food.

I am no stranger to the principle of freeware, however, dodgy stuff that requires registration, email addresses, activation codes, etc. usually turns out not to be so free after all and is better be avoided.
