Yer man on Second Captains summed it up best.

They probably just like Daisy Duke.

Dave McIntyre is pretty good. Don't know why we don't get more of him. A shake up with McIntyre, Wooly and maybe Tommy Martin replacing the current bunch of clowns would be great. Ditch the doping talk, all player interviews across all sports (they're fckng ****e), political agendas (and correctness), Kimmage, Cliona, Wood, Thornley and BODcasts. Just bring good cutting analysis each night. Fill the show with the likes of Tim Vickery, John Mullane and Shane Horgan to do guest slots. Get people like Eamon Sweeney for paper review. Do Saturday panels with guests who actually say something more than what would be expected from a cardboard cut out.

I like this Nathan fella in the big chair. Bit of craic about him.

Would love to hear Eamon Sweeney on the paper review. He's the reason I buy the otherwise nonsense Sunday Indo most weeks.

You don't think that in a week when the confederate flag was employed yet again in racist marches that it was inappropriate for it to be brought to a match in Ireland?

I'm just not sure I follow.

I'd be classified as socially liberal and I accept that but surely if a flag has been flown in the name of outward racism, then it's not appropriate to immediately afterwards fly the same flag at a match, just because there's a very tenuous association between your team and the flag.

I've been wrong before but this seems a bit straight-forward.

Confederate flag topic came up again on off the ball bag this evening, Ger said any Cork supporter who has the flag is a racist. Simple as that.

Was listening to this in the car home. "If you have the flag then you ARE a racist" says Gilroy. Having earlier called for 'nuance' with regard to another topic, I think that Gilroy needs to take some of his own advice. Why didn't somebody ask Gilroy what precipitated the Cork fans bringing in the Confederate flag. Was it because the colors are the same as theirs, or because they all have slaves tied up in the shed at home. He then proceeds to read out negative texts and resorts to name calling of anybody that don't agree with him.

The irony of Gilroy aligning the Cork fans with nazis, as he sits there in charge of all his yes men minions, assigning motives to Cork people that they do not have just so that he can portray them in a negative light. He's only short of firebombing Newstalk office and blaming it on Cork fans.

Ger has form in making ill judged off the cuff remarks, don't forget in the recent marriage equality referendum he labelled all who voted no, homophobes.
Joe was doing ok the night he brought up the flag issue until he got offended on behalf of future young black Irish inter-county players who would have to look up at the confederate flag in the stands. The operative word here been Irish, so the young black Irish, l assume would be no different than young white Irish and wouldn't have a clue what the flag symbolizes, l certainly hadn't a clue what the flag represented when l was a young teenager. Joe's assertion that young black lrish would or should be offended is a dangerous road to go down, you can't make people feel compelled to be offended because of the colour of their skin. This is what's happening in the state's at the moment, a lot of black people are uncomfortable with it.

    ?

All those who voted no in the marriage equality referendum are homophobes. That's what homophobia is. It's denying other humans the rights that you have because of "what" they are rather than for any legitimate or rational reason.

I'm not going to go in head-first with a mod warning at this stage but if you carry on with this bigoted "alt right" stuff, you will not be posting here for long.

A total of 1,201,607 people (62.1%) voted Yes and 734,300 (37.9%) voted No.

That is a lot of homophobes.

Lads lets not start doing the thing we are so harsh on Joe and Ger for. Yes, they are clowns but we are too if we start socio-political topics on a thread that is meant for airing or dissatisfaction at what was once the most entertaining radio show in the country. And it was on every night!

absolute bollox of a statement there. if you wanted to go all mod because someone is disagreeing with you about a topic then why are you a mod?

was the charter of this forum broken?

Drive me nuts with their "clever clever" presentation. Can't listen.

That was Post #7 from 5 years ago, and the thread started off with a statement that the programme was not as good as back in The Good Old Days. So when was this Golden Age of Off the Ball?

a few days ago when joe and ger were off, and it was just nathan, covering sports.

I think some people have short memories. Eoin, Ken and Murph would have covered the same stories as the new lot and taken the same stances. It would have been more entertaining and far less po-faced, but the positions would have been the exact same. McDevitt is even more anti-doping then Joe, Ken is far more forthright in his views and Murph..well, Murph is Murph.

My issue with OTB now is ...it's just not that interesting anymore = not really worth listening to and hardly do these days.

All fair points. I find Ken Early pretty funny so maybe I'm a bit biased. McDevitt hates drugs in sport too (and that's fine) but he's not a broken record like Joe.

I've stopped listening. I never thought I'd say I miss the dislikeable Woollie Parkinson but without him, the show has descended into a bland sludgy echo chamber. Too many presenters up their own backsides and an overwhelming sense of meh.

Would it not be a good idea to have a wee listen now and again to see if things might have improved? When did you stop?

You shouldn't be. Remember, if you don't agree with everything the liberals want, they throw a tantrum and call are a Nazi. And that's effectively what Ger did the other night. If he wasn't so pig headed, and listened to a few of the texts, he might actually learn something. But when you have been in charge of the show as long as he has, and none of the yes man minions you have employed are prepared to put a counter view, this is where you end up.

They need to leave their politics/agendas out of sport. Cork people never brought their politics in to sport. Waving the confederate flag was not a sign that Cork people are in favour of slavery, so to assign those motives to them is simply attempt from Gilroy to be seen to be offended on other people's behalf. They have enough shows that drive their liberal views down your throat, they could at least give it a break for the sport show.

It basically boils down to this for me too. Kilbane and Eoin Sheahan are two really poor additions to the show. Kilbane obviously gets them interviews with a lot of people they would not normally get to speak to. But he is just dull and safe. Eoin Sheahan brings nothing. I'm sure he's a nice lad, but he just sounds like the intern to me. Desperately trying to be funny, desperately trying to prove his knowledge... The show needs a dissenting voice.

I think you need to stop listening to radio for the good of your own mental health at this stage.

Well I've stopped watching TV, so maybe you're right. But OTB was one of the few radio shows that I used to enjoy, particularly on the journey home. I've started listening to audio books in the car, but some of them are hard work.

Don't be drawn in P9. Who would we complain about if it weren't for the OTB doping police?

No, it's something I've seriously considered before it was mentioned here. I spend a lot of time in the car and you really have to answer the question. Who could I learn more from.... Dale Carnegie or Ray D'Arcy. And unless you want to know why there are less crumbly bits on the Brunch ice cream, the answer has to be the former.

"Alt right" my arse. Bigoted? I voted yes, but uncomfortable with people been called homophobic without knowing them, just like l think it's wrong of Ger to call some Cork fans racist. You rather ban me, for what exactly l don't know? Are u on some kind of a power trip? Have u ever heard of free speech?

There is no right to free speech here. And even if there was, it doesn't give people a right to say what they want without being challenged on it.

I can see a lot of outrage over hullaballoo's comment, but not one actual counterargument i.e, legitimate reasons for voting no in the marriage equality referendum.

I voted 'yes' in the referendum, but I would be aware that the the major world religions aren't keen on homosexuality, therefore if one was a committed member of one of those religions voting 'no' would be more than a possibility?

Being a practicing member of the Islamic faith (for example) would be a 'legitimate reason' I would have thought?

And surely saying that someone who voted like that didn't have 'legitimate reasons' would imply intolerance to that person's religious beliefs?
