I normally download the previous nights podcasts from the Newstalk app and listen to them in work but there hasn't been anything fresh on it for the last week. Anybody else have this issue? It's a right pain

The news stories on the app are the same as Friday still.

Plus the notification for player ratings from the match led to a blank page.

It's acting up a bit alright.

Although it is possible it's just been redesigned by the same person who drew up the new schedule.

Just listened the Lance interview there

    My observations:

-Gilroy seemed to be really out of his depth….like a dog chasing a car. Once he actually caught up with the car he didn’t know what to do with it.

-Lance sounded really really bored…wouldn’t be surprised if he was watching movie with the subtitles on or doing online shopping while easily batting away Gilroy’s rather lame questions.

-Lance remains a grade A arseh0le but there is almost something admirable in how he revels being such a grade A arseh0le….I suspect he was calling Gilroy ‘Gary’ all the way through on purpose just to annoy him

-Gilroy’s question about the motors ended up backfiring spectacularly imho….gave Lance an easy out and a chance to further ridicule him

-OTB are promoting this interview as if it’s some major ground-breaking Pulitzer-prize type winning journalism – it really isn’t….all it did was give Lance a chance to flex his well-honed bullsh1t muscles and made Ger/Gary sound like an earnest Transition Year student doing some sort of media project.

Just checked it there and it seems to be back up and running again.

Only downside is now I have a weeks worth of stuff to catch up on!

I don't use their app for podcasts just use normal pod as one and subscribe. It had the lance interview up before it aired on Friday.

Kimmage on with Matt Cooper now. I think Matt is just making up texts to get a reaction. lol

He seems a lot more reserved on The Last Word, I thought he would have made a bigger issue out of Cascarino's experience with boosters in France

A lot of people think that there are sociopathic traits evident in Lance. I think he's a fascinating character to study.

Paulie managed to get a good rise out of him over taking paracetamol. Kimmage is at the far extreme of the divide on "doping" to the extent that I'd say he disapproves of diet management. Hard to believe he is against people taking paracetamol before a rugby match, never mind the cortisone injections.

Kimmage has been so strident on the issue of drug use he HAS to take a strong line on ALL drugs, paracetamol included.

It's a question everyone with an opinion on drugs in sport has to ask themselves though, when does pain relief become performance enhancing?...

Undoubtedly...the man is a total psychopath imho.

I think it's fortunate that his main sphere of influence (so far) has been in the relatively innocuous world of pro-cycling......he could do fierce damage in the world of politics or big business.

Paul O Connell was basically saying it's a nonsense that someone who has a headache should not be allowed take a paracetamol. That was not what Kimmage was saying, he was saying that if you take any kind of drug which you do not need to take at the time of taking it to remedy something and it will improve your performance during a game through pre emptive retrospective usage it should be called what it is; a performance enhancing drug. O Connell is a smart guy, I'm surprised he was either petty enough to try and suggest that was what Kimmage was saying or dumb enough not to realise what Kimmage was saying.

I don't know where exactly he stands with dietary supplements which are WADA approved, but I can't imagine he has any issue with smart dietary and nutritional management, that would be daft.

You know he's a complete b*st*rd, but I can help but have a huge admiration for Lance Armstrong for the sheer willpower he must have had to overcome all the challenges in his life. Between the cancer, the interminable slog of the tour de france (whether on drugs or not), and then enduring the hatred of the entire world for the last few years. There's no keeping the man down, and I admire him for that.

O'Connell was being hyperbolic in saying Kimmage says you can't take a paracetamol for a headache to highlight that Kimmage is at the extreme end of the spectrum of opinion around doping.

My comments about his views on diet management are the same thing. I am overstating his position on the use of consumables to enhance performance.

It might be a bit flippant for people who are overwrought by the prominence of drug usage in sports but some of us don't take it that seriously, while others are somewhere in the middle and think a balance can be found between legitimate precautionary drug use and outright juicing.

Paul O'Connell, Felipe Contepomi, The Gooch.
    Some line-up.
Heard Colm Cooper but not the others.

    What were they like?

I listened to the podcast of the Paul o Connell interview.
He comes across as very grounded and genuine and has some good stories to tell, as expected from the career he had.
Can't wait to get the book.

Joe molloy in fairness is a very good interviewer. He seems able to put people at ease in interviews.
I've heard him interview david ginola and some others and he has a great handle on the subjects, is good humoured and doesn't want the limelight by asking minute-long questions a la Mr Gilroy.
He seemed to have a very good rapport with O Connell.

Matt Cooper interviewed Paul O'Connell on Monday, I imagine it's on the Today FM website as a podcast/listen back. It's well worth listening to.

Sometimes Ger is the anchor. Then sometimes Joe is the anchor...

But sometimes BOTH are on together.

    What gives?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,525 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Does anybody in the cycling fraternity have any clue what he was on about with this? Is the question as stupid as it seems? It seemed like it was just a vehicle for Ger to get in a sly dig with "well if you were cheating by taking drugs, what is the difference in using a motor". And he got Lance's back right up with that.

Think they are talking to Istvan Barjas tonight on the show, he's the guy who invented a tiny motor that fits in a racing bike. In 1998.

Ger Gilroy and self-awareness are strangers to each other.

They're a right pair of anchors :pac:

Kilbane has improved the show immensely imho - he's balanced, intelligent and gets his point across without dipping into the sarcasm and insincerity that the other presenters often lapse in to

I'm very disappointed in Kilbane. He's far too "nice". Agrees with everything that everybody is saying. Show still needs a Wooly type character to shake things up a bit.

Decided to try listen to lance podcast with Ben Foster. Sweet tiny baby jebus, they were just short of rubbing themselves in chocolate and eating themselves. Lance is beyond delusional! Couldn't hack it, lasted 15 minutes.

In some aspects ye he's missed, but at times he was just arguing for no reason about things he didn't understand. Kilbane is a bit nice alright, would be nice to have another person on hand to challenge him.

How often is Kilbane on? Doesn't he live in England? Would he stay in Dublin for just , what, three hours work a day? Surely it doesn't make financial sense? He must be well compensated for his trouble...?
( Giles lives in Birmingham i think and used to fly to Dublin to do the RTE panel.)

i think they were saying last week that he lives in kilmainham/inchicore/islandbridge, near to st pat's ground anyway.
he lives in ireland during the week and back to england at the weekend from what i gather.

He usually does 4 days a week, so maybe Monday to Wednesday and maybe a weekend day, but he goes to the UK for Premier league games at the weekend and works for the BBC too. Probably has an apartment here, but he would do about 6hours a day maybe, so in at 4 probably and leaves just after 10? I know Wooly used to say he did 8 hour days but left at 9.

Thought gilroy tried too hard to be a heavy hitter with Armstrong ...

He's not. As much as he'd like to he.

    100%

Acting the big shot waffling about sources. That made me cringe a little.

Should stick to unfunny crappy quizzes
