I've moved some posts related to Cabin in the Woods and The Expendables 2 to the dedicated threads on the films. For new films like that that are actively being discussed, please try and stick with the specific threads. This is a place for mentioning, critiquing or recommending those films that are unlikely to kick off massive amounts of debate, or which you only have a few brief thoughts on. But where enough people are discussing a film, it's better to discuss it in a dedicated space!

"The Shore" 2011 - last night as part of RTE's 'Ireland on Screen' season. Running to just 29 minutes you have to ask why bother making it at all. There are shorts and there are shorts (Martin McDonagh's "Six Shooter" was only 27 minutes and a real classic) but this offering was like an extended trailer.

The story of two long-lost friends from Northern Ireland who reunite 25 years after one of them fled to the United States to escape the "troubles".

Despite having a decent cast and smashing scenery it had hardly started when the credits came up. 2/10 and thats for the cast and scenery.

Tends to be why they're called short films.

That as may be but my point was that "The Shore" had nothing to it whereas "Six Shooter" had a beginning, a middle, and an ending.

    Watched The Avengers.
Went on a bit too long but overall, as far as Marvel films go, I've enjoyed this.

    Horrible Bosses.
Loved it but I would have liked to have seen more of Farrell.

Pulp fiction on again tonight never gets old. What a classic

The Avengers Great film in it's genre. Couldn't have wished for better. Normally I'm left disappointed when I hear something that excites me. Hearing that Joss Wheadon was writing/directing, I was really excited. He not only met my expectations but exceeded them. I'm a big Buffy/Firefly fan as well, so Avengers fit in to the general milieu of the type of thing I love.

The Talking Cure I enjoyed it.

It's Kind of a Funny Story

Thankfully I didn't know anything about the movie before watching apart form it was a look at depression.

considering the subject matter I thought was pretty funny in a quirky kind of way not in your face. Interesting look at depression and suicide from a teenagers point of view. Might be a little bit "too" teenagery for some. Enjoyable little flick!

Jiro Dreams of Sushi - I'm probably biased towards this as a complete sushi fiend, but it's still an excellent, thoughtful documentary. A portrait of an 85 year old craftsman at the top of his game, and the routine & collaboration that goes into justifying a 30,000 yen meal that lasts fifteen minutes. Interestingly, the film is also buffed up by an examination of Jiro's family and his sons' roles in the process (one has his own restaurant, another is expected to take over when Jiro retires): making some curious commentary on the continued role of tradition and succession in Japanese society. There's also some great action shots of Tsukiji fish market, and director David Gelb does not ignore the over-fishing problems the world's sushi obsession has led to. Also, the sushi photography is borderline pornographic. Sushi fans will emerge hungry.

    Drive 2011
Good movie about a stuntman getting in too deep with mobsters. Lead role played by Ryan Gosling and at times I felt like pulling him through the tv to drag the dialogue out of him.

    Project x
    What a party.

    Both movies had fantastic soundtracks.

Just watched The Next Three Days with Russell Crowe about a college professor who tries to break his convicted murderer of a wife from prison.

First half hour's a bit slow, but from the point where he begin's to plot his wife's escape is brilliant.

In the Name of the Father

Brilliant Irish film about the Guildford Four from Jim Sheridan. Daniel Day-Lewis is strong as always and good performances from Emma Thompson and the late Pete Postlethwaite. Powerful story.

Watched lockout last night. Was decent enough but could have been better. Some very ropey CGI at the start. Guy Pearce was entertaining as a kind of light Snake Plisken.

    The Imposter.

Fascinating doc (from the director of Banged up Abroad!) about a crazy French guy who pretends to be a missing American teen.

Left me with a lot of unanswered questions but still worth seeing.

It's been recommended here before (even I recommended it before) but DAMN, got me a copy of Drive today on BluRay and it is ****ing awesome...liked it even better the second time round.

Everything about this movie is sheer class...the simplicity of the story, the less is more dialogue, the acting, the cinematography - beautiful use of colours and tones...(reminds me of GTA Vice City) and the music fits so well with what is going on. The soundtrack to this is up in my favourites.

If you haven't seen it....see it and enjoy, if you have seen it....see it again and enjoy!

    :pac:

The Bourne Legacy. Nowhere near as good as the originals, It just isn't the same without Matt Damon in it, some decent set pieces though.

Wild Bill- Solid Brit flick about a dad released from prison who has two look after his two sons whose childhood he missed out on. Not the most original storyline buts it's done really well and you're really rooting for the protagonist in the end. Also features one of the best and funniest fight scenes i've seen in a while.

Safe House- Denzel and Ryan Reynolds in CIA conspiracy actioner. I was actually offended at how cliche and unoriginal this film was. You'll have the whole thing figured out in the first 15 minutes or so. Please don't watch this. This made 200m dollars at the box office, this makes me sad.
