I could be wrong here but surely the Music Director would dictate what the presenters play? I've often heard Phantom presenters make the odd remark in relation to 'having to play' a particular track.

think they have certain tracks or a certain % of their playlist which they have to play and then freedom to choose the remainder. not sure though - will stand corrected if anyone knows otherwise

Sinead still does the kiosk on a Saturday morning. Sinead Ni Curmain does an Irish show on Sunday mornings, no idea if she avoided the chop. Pretty decent show too. Very early though!
didn't hear any of the DJs who left mentioning Sinéad, so i presume she's still there.

The weekend late shows picked 90% of there play lists from what I know...

The same... which is very odd considering everything...

Ironically one of the reasons given the people being axed is that they played music that 'regular listeners would not be used to' and would encourage them to change station.

I laughed heartily and sadly at that one.

Kinda hoping the ones who leave apply for temp licenses and get their shows back on the air... I'd listen.

whoa there temp licenses ,back on air elaborate please surly a person cant be able to just apply for a license and start broadcasting .

id imagine there is a Irish language clause in the license requirements the same for Nadine on the kiosk but for culture reasons pity they didn't have a innovative show with good music clause

just thinking about this, it's quite weird reasoning, considering they've kept Metal Notes and Spiral Stares, both of which would be a lot further from the regular playlist than the shows they've axed...

Nadine O'Regan and Sinead Ni Churain were forgotten by me - how could I?! That means there are still six female presenters.

Could someone get their hands on the original lineup schedule somewhere? I am just trying to remember was Orlagh Donnelly the original presenter of Carraig Crua (the Irish language program). I know she used to present it. If she wasn't the first, who was?

Let's just recap on who is left from the original lineup when the station launched fully licenced back in 2006: Nadine O'Regan, maybe Orlagh Donnelly, John Caddell, Richie Ryan, Ray McGowan, Cathal Funge, Laura Lee Conboy and Jack Hyland. All those five lads go back to the temporary-licenced era and to the pirate era before that. Alison Curtis and Keith Walsh were also part of the pirate Phantom, as was a possible future presenter, one Joe Donnelly.

Here are most of the people who have left since in the broadcasting or management side of the house. Starting most recently and then working backwards: Richie McCormack, Michelle O'Doherty, Charlotte Flood, Pearl, Derek Byrne, Dee Reddy, Shane Galvin, James Byrne, Orla Ormonde, Muireann O'Connell, Fiona Scally, Riley, John Meehan, Micko, Amber, Simon Maher, Ger Rowe, Sinister Pete, Brian Daly, Steve Conway, Dara Brophy, Sinead Ni Mhordha, Edel Coffey, Emma Meehan, Aidan Lynch, Neil Austin and John Walshe.

Most (note: MOST!) of those names are no longer on Irish radio. Hopefully, that will change over time.

it must be soul destroying for every presenter that lost their show due to dumb ass executives that don't understand independent music.

particularly the fact that in the main the more popular and familiar songs / bands become ( playlists) the less appealing for better or worse they become to a person that enjoys avant guard music so to speak

unless it has changed dramatically since i moped about town

i cant see one of the founder presenters going down the road of pushing a new station considering how they were all ultimately treated by phantom

pod casts is the way to go for pearl James Derick and Shane they all built up a communication with record company's over the years I'm sure,
so as regard licensing and permissions they already have form.
a foot in the door so to speak.

i spent a lot of time this week downloading different shows to find new things to keep me sane but I'm missing the Irish lilt

someone / anyone please post a link to any shows they might recorded by said presenters i found 3 years of small hours on no more workhorse to keep me going in the meantime

Charlotte Flood hasn't left and also Derek Byrne confirmed he will still work for Phantom on an ad hoc basis filling in.

That lineup (esp. Simon Maher) would make a great radio station, bar Muireann O' Connell.

I for one enjoyed Sinister Pete.

Me too, exactly the style of show I want to listen to in the morning. Nothing against Richie (who was one of the better ones) but the jokey, banter filled shows that nearly every station seems to have rub me up the wrong way when I'm just out of bed.

So the new Sunday lineup is... Claire Beck and Alison Curtis.

    There's nothing left to say

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

Claire's show was ok, talking to a minimum (compared to Phantom Drive anyway), some good songs, but some of the usual playlist dross on there (Mumford and Sons, Macabees etc.), and a bit crap that the show was pre-recorded....
didn't hear Alison's show, presume that was also pre-rec'd when she was there during the week too.

lineup for the rest of Sunday:
    Stadium Rock (jack hyland) 2-7
Random Access (orlagh & eamon) 7-10
    Powerhouse (john cadell) - 10-12

just looks like cost saving measures to me. get a few presenters off the payroll, get a few of the existing ones to do a little bit extra, stretch out the programming a bit....

  • Registered Users Posts: 15 hichcock

honestly for the first time in about 6-7 years i have not tuned in to phantom on a Sunday and i think Tim was not live Fri and last night and i may be paranoid but there seamed to be a bit more playlist crap than normal on his show

    I'm not a happy bunny

Anyone know if I can catch Pearl's last show? I missed it when it was on. The last reason for me tuning in to Phantom. Shame she's gone.

Show on the sunday are pre-records as far as i'm aware. Haven't listened to phantom since Dereks last show. No plans to.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭Adiaga 2

I caught the end of Alison's show and thought it was pretty good. No played to death playlisted stuff. Think I would tune in again tbh.

It wouldn't bother me hugely if it was pre-recorded so long as the content was up to scratch which it was. She made reference to people texting in about a book title so surely they wouldn't try to fool listeners? Would they?

Only tuned in because Huey Morgan came on BBC6 Music and he always sounds like he wants to pop a cap in someone's @ss or whack some wise guy or something. His show and a lot off others on BBC6 are pre-recorded.

What does bother me are the repeats of "best-bits" from week day shows.

Eamonn Fennel's accent grates on me so much. Can't listen to it at all. Plus it seems to have turned into a Dublin GAA appreciation show when he's on.

me too, don't actually listen in the mornings now as he annoys me too much. wake up to Newstalk and just put on CDs in the car. at least he's finished this week.
don't bother turning the radio on on Sunday evenings.

here's a promo for the new breakfast show starting next week:

    Says it all really. :(

I never listen to radio at home but generally do in the car travelling to / from work and at the weekend. Always enjoyed Pure Morning and Richie Ryan when he used to do Drivetime. Switched to Nova in the evening once Claire Beck came on air - I've genuinely tried to give her a chance but she's just too 'Spin' for my liking. Similarly I've tried to give Eamon and Orla a go but I just can't take to him - Orla is grand IMO. That said I can't do Pat Courtney on Nova in the mornings either but Marty Miller is a pretty good presenter and comes across as a nice guy albeit not the most polished.

I'll give Keith and that other chap a go but I'm not getting a warm feeling at all from that clip - more the 'look at me, I'm MAD crap'. :(

I tuned in by accident this morning and...!
Just awful; two slick jocks with the banter and foolery, just like every other morning show. I had quit Phantom sometime ago as their indie-shmindy, high rotate playlists and personality DJ focus were getting insufferable. Still listened to Pearl on Sunday mornings though, and that show will be missed. Phantom FM was never a true alternative station, even from the launch in 2006; it was just too narrow cast, too formatted towards the Oasis/Blur canon of Q magazine rock.
There is still non-commercial radio out there in Dublin: Dublin City FM 103.2 has the best music on air during their morning and afternoon drive time shows, and their specialist music shows are an oasis amongst all the corporate muck that rules on the dial.

another departure, Jim Carroll's excellent show will be finishing on Tuesday:
    http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/2012/10/31/the-penultimate-far-side-playlist-for-october-30/

after Derek, Shane, etc leaving, his was the last show left that I listened to for finding new music.

oh well, at least that's another 2 hours that they can fill with Two Door Cinema Club, The Vaccines, Kodaline, Mumford and Sons, and whatever other bland sh1t has been hanging around the playlist for the last few months.

nice one, a little bit of faith restored in Phantom :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 515 ✭✭✭con1982

I really can't stand the new breakfast show. It reminds me of listening to the Strawberry Alarmclock on 104 when I was in my teens (before I knew better). I can't remember laughing even once in three weeks. My mornings are now radio free zones :(

I thought Orla and Eamonn had good chemistry. It's a pity they weren't give a chance.

    Richie McCormack was brilliant!

i'd stopped listening to phantom a long time ago , their daytime DJ's are dreadful and no one worse then Ritchie and Michelle in the morning . its time that a station took a leaf out of bbc 6 music's book and get interesting people in to do shows and not someone who can run a desk since they were 12
