Do yourself a favour and flash my image. Everything is done for you and all you'll need to do is amend the server file by adding a line in there.

The Judder fix has been added to the latest HDMU but first report is that it hasn't worked. Keep an eye on here: http://www.sattvhelp.com/forum/showthread.php/33995-Amiko-Alien-HD-channels-distorting-studdering?p=59264&viewfull=1#post59264

There were two early releases with a 'fix', Neutrino and HDMU that didn't work. It will be fixed soon though.

Yeah, at least it's looking positive, finally some movement, it's been a problem since May/June

Don't believe everything that shower tells you

But yes issue is being actively worked on by people who can code and not by people who talk a lot.

What version of Spark are you on?

    1.2.63

There was a weather bug in version .63 or .64 and Spark disabled all online features to prevent corrupting the box.

You may have to download Spark 1.2.68 from here and install it via USB.

    1. Unzip the file to the root of your USB flash drive.
    2. Plug into your Alien2.
    3. Go to MENU > SYSTEM > UPGRADE > UPGRADE FROM USB
    4. Leave upgrade type as “App”
    5. Arrow down to folder and press OK
    6. Navigate to the folder where the upgrade is, select the version.xml, press OK
    7. Press red key to start the upgrade

Is it definitely an Alien 2 you have and not a Golden Media or Sab? While they are almost identical they do have their own versions of Spark tied to the box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,811 ✭✭✭taytobreath

oh god sorry, its a golden media. i thought they were identical

They are pretty much identical, just the Spark firmware is tied to each particular box.

Here's the Golden Media 1.2.68 firmware.

Follow my PM details next and install my channel list, just take it in easy steps and don't try to do two things at once.

With regards to my channel list just remember the Saorview channels (RTE 1, 2 etc.) probably won't work as you're in a different part of the country to me and will need to be retuned, all the satellite channels will be fine though.

NUTZZ all I say fair play to you and forums need more posters like you.

but I must say when Taytobreath realised he had a different stb it did make me laugh.
good to see it looks like you got sorted but !

my dish etc is getting mounted on Tuesday so expect a few questions from me around then if you guys don't mind :(

Tayto has had the ultimate nightmare. He's not fully sorted yet but I discovered yesterday that his version or installation of the e2upgrade plugin in Spark was either corrupt or incorrect. It was originally saying that Images were installing in 10 secs. So flashing a new version of the plugin sorted that but for some reason, his box freezes when my image is loaded. He'll be loading a fresh unmodified image today so should be sorted for the weekend.

So lesson to all - yes, these boxes are fairly bullet proof. Make a mistake and just flash again, no harm done.

    Keep the faith !!

+1 to all that. I even had to get a null modem cable out and apply a rescue image to one of the boxes someone else flashed but afterwards worked without issue.

I sold mine today. I'll miss the guy. Next step for me VIX etc..

    last question:

has anyone managed to get this image working with a NAS rather than tethered usb harddrive?
Network shares weren't working on the older Enigma2 images - I tried the Hyperion, Open-ARP and RSP installs all with the same result. You could add the access information via the interface but it didn't mount the share.

Yesterday I installed the latest HDMU image and the network share was the first thing I tried - it worked so I will be sticking with HDMU for now.

    Hi all,

Been following this thread on and off for some while now!
I'm on the fence as to purchasing this box. Perhaps some of you can help:

    1. It appears using even 'standard' Spark software and CrossEPG plugin that a full, combined saorview and free-to-air satellite EPG program guide is available. This allows seamless switching between Irish DVB terrestrial programming and UK DVB satellite programming. Is this correct?

    2. If '1' is true, does this make this box the most family friendly solution available giving full range of channels?

I'm a dabbler myself, but need a setup to pass the babysitter and mother-in-law test where I can give them one remote and they can use my TV easily!
At present I've a mix of devices I use and enjoy myself, including Google TV, Sky NowTV box, HTPC running OpenElec XBMC connected to remote Mediaportal TV server.
For normal day-to-day TV I have a DVB-S2/DVB-T combo but it's a pain keeping it updated, sorting channels, etc. There's only now and next EPG for satellite, there is a full 7-day EPG for Saorview only. Setting up recordings using it is consequently a pain without full EPG.
I can manage easily myself using XBMC/MediaPortal but need something I don't have to constantly explain!

So ... it the Alien triple tuner the solution for reasonable money?

Thanks for any help or feedback.

    1. yes
    2. yes, but Enigma is better

Spark is much the same as you've already got with added 7 day EPG for satellite. It's ok for some, but most of us flash Enigma as a second OS fir the many extras it gives. It's dual boot, so you can flick between them. Get Spark setup first while you're working on getting Enigma configured

    Enigma offers much more:
Can stream channels out direct from the box to laptop/tablet/phone over your home WiFi (unlike Sky Go which comes from the internet and depends on your connection).
Has 3x tuners (2 sat feeds, one aerial feed), you can record/stream 2x HD channels and watch a third all at the same time
Autobouquets plugin: Auto-arranges the channels in the same order, groups and numbers as they are on Sky, 101 RTE1, 401 Sky Sports 1 etc. It also auto-updates any changes Sky make to the order
CrossEPG plugin: Pulls down the 7 day electronic guide for satellite
CoolTVGuide plugin: Sky Guide type planner
    Autotimers: Series link
    RTE Player plugin
Lots of other extras, ahem <cough>, save lots of money

Thanks for the reply Smee, appreciate it!

The only reason I didn't mention Enigma is that it appears to be under development and maybe not yet ready to let loose on my tech fearing family?! I could be totally wrong here.
I see ChampionC on this forum is doing a lot of good work and the list of plugins you mention certainly sound attractive.

So, where did you guy's purchase? I see it is available at satellite.ie for approx. €195.

    Cheers, Zilog

Enigma is a community project, it's ever evolving and therefore will never be finished. New plugins appear (and break) every day. Enigma is easier to use than Spark TBH, it's the setting up is the difficult bit, however you can download Championc's image and be pretty much good to go with plugins.

Enigma will always be "under development" as it is open source there will always be someone wanting to tinker/add functionality.
What matters is that we have stable versions at the moment that can be let loose on the family (which we do).
My family finds is fine to use. Get one of championc's images to get you started and you can go from there.

Thing is, you will sort it with the lads/ladies help and then you will be able to help the next person who has the same problems as you.
