Mash is on for the Gose

5 litre batch, 600g Pale Wheat, 400g Pilsner
mash at approx 64deg for an hour, don't want any residual sweetness.
240g acidulated malt in for a further 45 minutes
hour boil, with a small amount of hops (5g of 3.6% Saaz)
then salt and coriander added with 10 to go

Just finished cooling 24 liters of Milk (Sweet) Stout and taking a break before the clean-up begins !

All went more or less to plan but my OG is 1.050 and I was expecting 1.060
I think that I may have oversparged but not sure as my efficiency works out at about 77% but I'm still all new to this :)

The only thing that I could have done better is not stuck my finger in the counter-flow chiller as the output water was already "skin-burning" hot after only a few seconds.

Doing a milk stout next week also.

What yeast did you go with?

I found about 10 different recipes and they almost all went with something different with Wyeast 1099 being popular but I when with what I had and used Safale US-05

Cheers. Just got the same after some reading.

On a side note. The recipe builder on the geterbrewed site saved me a nice few pound.

I could buy 11 grams of Gouldings and 30g challenger without having to forkout for 200g for hops to end up in the freezer for 6 months before binning.
    4.2kg of Maris O
    200g roasted
    200g special b
    300g crystal
    300g chocolate
    200g flaked Barley
all put together in a custom kit of my design.
Saved a 10er and no leftovers to try a keep fresh.

The lactose only came in 500g though.

Great idea TBH Hope the homebrew company follow suit.

    Brewday within the week. :)

How much Lactose do you add. My recipe says 300g Not sure if thats what I want. I like a sweet milk stout.

    4 Kg Maris O
    340g Crystal
    340g Chocolate
    340g Munich
    300g Flaked Barley
    200g Flaked Oats

I though have ended up with a bag of Goldings in the freezer :)

Lactose came in a 500g bag and I used 400g; added with about 10 minutes left in the boil.

First proper AG brew that I didn't make a hames of the mashing (and have to bring the numbers up with DME) today! Was aiming for 10L post boil with 1.046 and got 10L on the nose with 1.044. I'll call that a success.

It's a reworking of one of my extract recipes that turned out very well. Single hop with Brewer's Gold with a reasonably small bittering load at the beginning some big late additions. The 5L extract version was fantastic after a few weeks, though it's very heavy on the hops due to the low alpha on the brewer's gold. Didn't seem too bad on the small batch, but I got a shock when I scaled it up (I used 105g today!!).

Used an aeration stone too, saved much flailing and splashing with a paddle - just left it in for 20 mins or so towards the end of the cooling. Worked a dream, nice foamy wort and 0 effort on my part.

I think it's time to get into a kegging set up. What can I buy from China?

Mottley is doing CO2 refills now, and supplying the kit also I think.

    He's not chinese though.

I think you have to buy one of their cylinders and they will then replace it with a full one (for a fee) when needed.

Well that saves me going out to Bray each time, might look a bit odd getting on the train with a co2 cylinder though

The cylinders are old Fire Extinguishers.

I pulled this off the yeast last night, and it's fermented down to 1.000, which I wasn't expecting.

Not as much sourness as I'd have liked, so it's just a pretty nondescript 60/40 wheat/pilsner ale.

Nice hint of salt on the finish though, so I got that right.

Think I need a larger pot for mashing in, when I added the Acid malt it went all porridgy.

So, a semi-successful first small batch, the beer is drinikable, but not what I was looking for

That's pretty standard, its the new valve on the second hand cylinder your really paying for

I presume there not filling it themselfs?

Do they give the weight of the cylinder (full) so you can monitor consumption?

Here's my attempt at an ESB (extra special bitter).

    4.5Kg MO
    340g Medium Crystal
    113g Dark Crystal

    42g Goldings (60 min) FWH
    7g Fuggles (20 min)
    7g Goldings (20 min)
    7g Fuggles (0 min)
    7g Goldings (0 min)

    1 Pk SafAle #S-04

Brewday went well with the Grainfather. Unfortunately I only hit 1.044 which I'm putting down to the crush of the MO which to be honest didn't look like it was crushed at all when I took it out of the box this morning. I may have to learn how to mill myself. Until then I'm going to have to add an extra 1Kg of base malt until I figure it out.

Also another problem with the sparge water heating so I sparged at 60C rather than 75C.

Bottled that Pale on Saturday, we changed the dry hop to a 0 minute addition, it's nicely balanced in my opinion.

    Brewed a Double Black IPA

8.5k of malt, something like 8k pale and the rest made up of Carafa 3 and Chocolate Malt.

Hop additions from the 30th minute only, but every 5 minutes added some of them new Slovenian hops from Get Er Brewed, the beer is for the North County competition in May, using about 300g of hops all told.

Got an OG of about 1.086 or thereabouts.

Also took a second runnings of that grain, and got an OG of 1.045 in about 5 litres of wort, so boiled that too and added some hops - a smaller amount - to make a table beer. It was very experimental, but a good experiment, I never thought we'd get so much more sugars out of that grain on a second runnings.

  • Registered Users Posts: 947 ✭✭✭fobster

What volume did you get into the FV for the Double BIPA? Did ya sparge or was the second runnings the sparge?

Doing a Black IPA myself for the comp as well :D Ballpark 6% but also with 300g of hops! May the best brew win!

mashed in 16 litres, got 8 back from that first runnings, recirculated, then batch sparged with 15 litres to get it up to 23 litres in the boil.

Then sparged again in about 7 litres, getting about 5 back for the table beer.

The table beer is not going to the comp unless it's totally amazing.

What yeast are you using? WLP530 in mine,it was down to about 1.030 last night.
