It never got released in Europe. It's a fine strategy rpg, one of the few good games level 5 made, but nothing amazing. As with all level 5 games the story and writing aren't great. On the other hand it's a very simple and compelling srpg that's a bit like Vandal Hearts but not quite as good.

I've been playing Unicorn Overlord. About 15 hours in. Really good so far. Love the art style. Combat is kind of automatic, based on initiative and different skills depending on class. There's more customisation of how units behave that you can tweak but I haven't drilled too deep into that side of things yet.

Has anyone played Tactics Ogre:Reborn? I've just seen it on Steam. I had it for the PSP but I threw out my PSP when it was getting on and the battery got quite large. I was very fond of FFT and TO on the PSP.

It's pretty much the PSP version with some further refinements to how it plays to make it better. Fantastic port as well.

Cheers Retr0. Managed to get it half off on GMG yesterday. Good to hear that it's a good port.

Plus it kind of has a map so I can play it.

It's based on the Balkan war of the 90s so you've your geopolitics as well.

Looks like Final Fantasy Tactics remaster is coming out at some point as well which I'd highly recommend to TO fans as squaresoft poached the TO team and FFT is pretty much a follow up.

I adored the FFT port to WOTL. The translation alone by Alexander O. Smith is gorgeous. I wasn't the biggest fan off FFXII but I should check it out again as the dialogue is just lovely to listen to.

FFT actually wasn't a Alexander O. Smith translation. The translator however was very obviously trying to ape his style. It came off well but it's not quite AOS level. Much better than the PS1 original which was near incomprehensible despite giving us some bad ass lines (Blame yourself or God!).

I initially didn't get on well with the original release of FF12. I was kind of playing it wrong, it's a game you take your time with and explore and do side quests. If you mainline the story you will end up under levelled and hate the game.

I played through it again when the HD/zodiac spear edition came out and took my time with it and ended up adoring it. The zodiac spear edition also fixes a lot of issues with the game and makes levelling characters a lot more fun. I'd recommend going through it again.

Thanks. Does it help with late game spells? I found them to be useless since by the time they cast, you could have just attacked normally several times.

    Yeah they fixed that.

I remember on PS2 some of the spells were in memory but others had to be streamed in so you had Ultima, the most powerful spell but it had to be streamed in and by the time it was cast you could have cast 3 flares for more damage. All the spells are in memory so don't have to be streamed in now!

I just bought Final Fantasy XV on GMG on sale. Turns out I already own it so I've a spare Steam key if anyone wants it.

Looks like Trails in the Sky is getting a remake on Switch, and probably PS5.

Came to post that. It seems to have the battle system of Daybreak with a better turn order notification system.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,260 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The battle system is the weakest thing about the original so should be a big improvement.

I'm playing The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak, on ch 4, 80 hours played, must say I'm really enjoying it and the change they made to the battle system, good to see part 2 will out early next year as well.

Just finished Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth (superb, if a little easy on Normal) and will starting into Daybreak shortly. Having completed the demo and Chapter 1, I'm still not fully sold on the battle system yet.

Seems that NISA will not be the publisher for Trails in the Sky 1st. No mention of a new publisher atm but I suspect it's probably XSeed/Marvelous as they released the original on PSP and PC.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,260 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It could be Nintendo in Japan as they are saying it's a switch exclusive (which I'd put money on it being timed).

Not sure if marvelous/xseed have the people to do a trails localisation, NISA pretty much poached a lot of their staff when they took over Trials. Would be a shame to see it go somewhere else as NISA seem to be on top of localizing these games.

Have to say the trailer looks great. I probably won't play it as it's a long game and I'm way behind on the series only after finishing Zero.

I'm quite enjoying Tactics Ogre on PC, I have to say. I've mixed feelings about the level cap and the card spawns but it's a very good title.

An update has now been posted on Gematsu from a Falcom representative about Trails in the Sky 1st. It seems Falcom may be publishing it themselves instead of using a local distributor.

Platforms – “While the game has been announced for Nintendo Switch, a release on PlayStation and PC platforms is currently ‘to be determined.’ There is a possibility that it could be released on these platforms, and if that decision is made, it will be announced in a press release at a later date.”

Western Publisher – “At this time, the western publisher is ‘to be determined,’ which is why our company name was mentioned in the announcement. There is a possibility that we may handle distribution ourselves, but if arrangements are made with a local publisher, they would be responsible for distribution instead.”

I need to look into this. These games are apparently fantastic but the only English releases were on PSP where the localisation and release order was absolutely butchered. Really hope they didn't turn it into a gacha game.

I'm not sure if they have or not but the fact they're f2p doesn't instill confidence.

From reddit it's a Korean gacha with AI auto battles and 25 different currencies. And the character art is AI generated.

    Boo!

Seems Geofront is working on a fan translation of the first game but that was 18 months ago. So at least there's movement on it but as with all fan translations treat them as nice surprises when they do arrive as they can take a while.

About 10 hours in Visions of Mana and still trying to work out how I feel about it. It starts very strongly, goes hard and dark but then rubs up against the saccharine art-style and character design. Gameplay is very, very stop-start with cut scenes seemingly every five minutes, but I'm still just about enjoying it. The combat is fun, the music brilliantly in the style of the series and it looks really good visually.

Definitely one to play in Japanese with subs though, the voice acting is painful.

"This Trails in the Sky thing gets recommended all the time and looks like a fun anime jaunt"

Star Door 15 is the single darkest section of any of the eleven Trails game. Renne must be the character with the most appearances across the franchise right up to the current one.

Trails in the Sky 3rd is such an underrated game and was a brave departure in style from the first two.

I kept hearing the second game was the best and the third can be skipped as it's just an epilogue. I found the second game the weakest and the third was my favourite since it had the best combat and despite it being an epilogue, what an epilogue! Kevin went from cliche mystery man to a really compelling character and as for Renne... Not going to lie but the conclusion of her character arc brought a few tears out.
