They don't ever offer 2 euro less than store credit cash.. The whole idea with trading games in is they want you to buy something instore to maximise profitability wampy...

Correction! They don’t ever offer you 2 euro less than store credit cash. This is the one the Mexicans call El Wampo. In Germany he is Das Wamp. In gamestop he is known only as "yes-sir-thankyou-sir-three-bags-full-sir". If he wants €28 for his game then €28 is what he gets.

The box is downstairs in the hall. Damn you, daughters, sleep!

Yeah, it's only a small 30mb one to improve system stability. The big one that will bring the virtual console and improved speed isn't ready till April (it's to be spread over 2 downloads actually).

It's planned to be available till 2016. That's plenty :) looks like they're doing what they did with the browser on the Wii, it's free for now and will become chargeable later for johnny come latelies

Just wondering, is there a list available of Hard drives confirmed as working with the Wii U?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

On my phone so can't lok it up but if you Google it there's an official list and a less official list of user tested options. Note, most officially supported ones have external psus, there seems to be an issue with bus powered drives. A y cable will sort that but obviously uses up a valuable usb port.

Anecdotally it seems any drive with independent power will work and will be formatted to a max of 2tb and any drives people complain about (usually the drive spinning down and causing the WiiU to hang) is bus powered and doesn't have a secondary connection for extra juice

Edit : Back at my desk
    Official list
    http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/external_usb_devices.jsp

    an Unofficial list
    http://wiiudaily.com/2012/11/wii-u-external-hard-drives/

And holy crapaloni. While looking this up, there's already a WiiU USB Loader??? Jaysus that was quick. And no, I won't discuss that here - to the Modding forum!

Can't access from work, but do they state if the drives can be partitioned? Not much sense buying a massive drive just for the Wii U. But I would make use of the extra space if I could partition it

I thought they did the opposite with the Wii though, i remember paying 500 points for the browser and later on they gave us a choice of a free NES game to make up for it going free. Or maybe my memory is failing me, I got the Wii about a year after it came out, so maybe that was the way for late comers.

    No, if you use a 4TB drive, it's a 2TB WiiU drive!
From the Nintendo site linked above :
"To optimize performance and ensure a consistent experience, all USB storage devices must be formatted and configured for use with the Wii U console. Once a device has been configured for use with a Wii U console, it cannot be used with another Wii U console, PC, or MAC unless it is reformatted. Please be sure to back up any content before formatting the hard drive for Wii U as this content cannot be recovered."

Since you can't access it, here's the official list
    Buffalo

    1 TB: HD-LB1.0TU3-US

    2 TB: HD-LB2.0TU3-US

    http://www.buffalotech.com/products/desktop-hard-drives/drivestation/drivestation-axis-2

    Seagate

    Backup Plus Desktop Drive

    1TB : STCA1000100 (US)

    2TB : STCA2000100 (US)

    http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/backup-plus-desk/

    Expansion Desktop

    1TB : STBV1000100 (US)

    2TB : STBV2000100 (US)

    http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/expansion-hard-drive/

    Toshiba

    1 TB: HDWC110XK3J1

    2 TB: HDWC120XK3J1

    http://us.toshiba.com/computers/storage/desktop/canvio-desk

    Western Digital (WD)

    My Book™

    1TB : WDBACW0010HBK

    2TB : WDBACW0020HBK

    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=870

Personally I would avoid Seagates for the forseeable future. But all of them look like big clunky 3.5" beasts that are going to make a lot of noise under your telly.

The unofficial list has others, like a Transcend 2.5" military grade bus-powered drive, as I said they (may) need Y cables. I'm using one of those on my Wii at the moment actually, it only works in one of the USB ports, may be that bus power is stronger in some ports than others. I've seen references to using the top right USB port on the WiiU with hard drives, this might be why?

USB keys work too, but not sure how heavy the write traffic is on the wiiU - mines still in it's box :( - so it's possible it might eat them pretty quickly. Same would go for an SSD.

Apparently at this point in time there's not a lot you can fill that 2TB with, so you might be better off going with whatever you have round the house for now to see how it all works and what kind of space you might conceivably need then spend you money wisely. Also, with 4TB disks now on the market, the 1s and 2s will start coming down in price over the next few months.

Was tidying ahead of family coming over this morning and the girls have coughs. Luckily there's a terrible Drew Barrymore movie on which secured me some telly time tonight. F'ing update keeps timing out, though thankfully without bricking my new toy. Loving the controller so far. My wife is not a fan but then it did take me 45 minutes to find the volume slider :)

    Half way there...

Edit: ooooh, and updating... 72%... Sooooo close

Edit again: 11 :40 and its all done.

I'll add you this evening! Best way is don't add people using the friend list. Go to Miiverse, search the name, add as friend.

900 sales in February in a country of just under 40 million people for the Wii U. That's a touch worrying for Nintendo

What would be normal/expected numbers. Is there anything to compare Wii U selling 900 and any other consoles performance. Would make it a more useful number with a comparison to see just how bad or otherwise its doing.

Also a large percentage of the 40 million will be too young or likely too old to buy a console of any description.

    Wii u : 4 million sold
    Ps4: 0
    Xbox 720: 0

Sony and ms are doomed :pac:

Well, by comparison the PS3 and Xbox 360 both exceeded 6,000 in the same month

Didn't get them from a site so can't link to them I'm afraid. Work in the industry and was fed the figures earlier this week. Didn't get numbers for the Wii unfortunately. Didn't think to ask to be honest.

I don't think the numbers are unexpected to be honest - anyone who wanted one over the Christmas already has one, and there hasn't been a rush of must-haves hitting shops lately. It'll likely pick up in the next 6 weeks since there are a few tasty games on the way

That was my first thought too, the Xmas rush is over & there has been no real reason to buy a Wii U since then. A few new games will get it back on its feet again.

March 28th for Lego City Undercover, no idea when Scribblenauts is out! Even it's Wikipedia page has no release date listed for Europe!
