Thanks for the reply Simply TV but I'm still confuded, I'm afraid.
I can see from page 16 of the paper User Manual that there is a HDCP setting on the Configuration Menu but It doesn't appear on that menu for me.

I got one of these boxes over the weekend. It came with firmware 1.2 but I upgraded it to 2.5 which has the "SatFree" option with 7-day EPG.

I had high hopes for this firmware but unfortunately it is buggy as hell.

Some problems I've experienced in "SatFree" mode which require switching off at mains to resolve:
    • Browsing through channels in OSD (up/down when viewing a channel) - stops responding to user input
    • Browsing through EPG - freezes completely
    • It gets into a state where it thinks it's changing channel but it's not (LED display and OSD show it's changing)

    Other problems in "SatFree" mode:
    • EPG randomly doesn't work - screen goes black for a few seconds, video signal goes for a few seconds, then it throws you back to the channel you were on. Sometimes trying the EPG again works successfully after this, sometimes a power cycle is required
    • Interactive stuff sometimes doesn't work properly, e.g. the BBC Olympics red button menu is sometimes very slow and not rendering pages correclty, and links to channels do not work. It seems to work reliably in standard "Satellite" mode.
    • Sometimes it stops responding for a few seconds when browsing channels in OSD or EPG

    Other problems:
    • After upgrading firmware, in standard "Satellite" mode it only wanted to scan one transponder when doing the full auto scan. I resolved this by going to the "Manual scan" menu and choosing a different TP - after that the auto scan would scan everything else in its list.
    • Satellite auto scan takes about 15-20 minutes to complete - at least it gives some notification of progress but it's slow (SatFree is very quick)
    • No other serious issues with "Satellite" mode until today when it decided to forget half the channels :(
    • Power supply is noisy when in standby - I always unplug it because of this. I've noticed this on other cheap STBs and DVD players so probably not broken, just cheap.
    • No page up/down in EPG

I haven't noticed any issues with ITV1 HD, but I have not watched it much.

The EPG is quite legible on my 14" CRT (though this is a decent video monitor, not consumer-grade muck :D), and quite responsive when it's not acting up. The remote isn't too bad for a cheap box. I haven't tried the HDMI output or DVR functionality yet.

Is there any way to edit the Satellite channel list on a PC via USB? I had to manually add the BBC Olympic transponders which was a bit annoying, but I guess that's expected since they're new?

Can you dump the channel list to a USB ?

    Upload it somewhere.

I bought a Triax ST-HD537 last year. The software was abysmal as evidenced in
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056168690
Thankfully I got my money back.

So I'm a bit skeptical of Triax.

Is the Triax TSC114 any better or a lot better tham the ST-HD537 ?

Anyone know how the TSC114 compares to the Walker WP645TS_HD ?

I've tried it out alright, and it's rubbish.

It's wholly unreliable, redbutton stuff doesn't work as it should, as well as the box becoming sluggish with a fondness of crashing.

Anyone got a link, or PM me the link for firmware version 2.5 please? I understand it's buggy but want to try it out for myself thanks.

I have spent 2 -3 months living with the Walker and look after the Triax TSC114 for someone else. For what it is worth, here are my observations on mainly the Walker, but also some comparison for both. Info below is from a non-techy and apologies if I get some terminology wrong.

Walker while recording, can't watch tv on other "side" of the box. Triax you can.

Walker - no software updates yet (still on officially on 2.3). If I am wrong on this, then my box is refusing to update over broadcast.

Walker - tv pic quality very good. Triax - same. No notable differences to a regular Joe soap non-specialist user between a cheap HDMI and expensive one. See my previous posts re pink screen issue which still persists.

Walker - no errors re slow HD. Triax, regular errors re slow HD even when fast hard drive attached.

Walker often gets 'confused' when setting recordings and no visual sign it is recording. Confused as in recording is set, but EPG does not show it, and on screen messages could be clearer about what is happening. Triax has a visual cue through lights on front and seems to do better in the recording stakes.

Walker pause function on PVR - shaky, but works most of the time. To be fair, could be HD issue too, but unlikely as brand new HD.

Walker on screen displays are great. Clear, bright colourful and easy to access. Triax, like using windows in 1980s. Grey, boring, options sometimes difficult to find.

Walker. Built-in media player is so so. Plays some AVIs, not others. Sometimes buttons 'freeze' in playback or onscreen messages gets stuck on screen while show plays off HD (hard reset required). Built-in media player on Panasonic Viera TV much better than than Walker. Triax - haven't use media player function.

Walker - detailed info on a show: Should be able to press info once for now next and again for description. Too cumbersome to get description of show (EPG, select show, press info). Should be easier.

Overall, in my experience, a Sky box is excellent and my 8 year old Sky + box did a better job then the walker on some features. But as a inexpensive box with no monthly fees, the Walker does the job fine, but far from excellent.

If you are a Walker software engineer reading this, you might look at some of these for next update!

I'm led to believe that the next firmware update will allow this feature.

Ooh, interesting. I hope this is the case.

I thought there were only 2 Saorview approved combo/combi boxes - the Walker WP654TS-HD and Triax TSC 114.

Now to make me more confused there's this Finlux SAO634 STB T8010 and yet another, the 4ife SV600 (I think it's a combo).

I know it's purely subjective but

which is prettier to look at !?
much more importantly ..... which has the best software - ease of manipulation of favourites - sorting favourites etc.

What to do ? Where to go ?

Interesting indeed , the 3rd party sat free patch is also supposed to be pretty stable with the 7 day freesat guide and also has the dual recording facility.

Is that a new version of the SatFree fw? The one I had, v2.5, was very unstable and needed regular reboots so I ended up reflashing boxes I was testing back to the official v2.3.

Yeah I think its 2.9 sat free but for some reason the non sat free 2.9 is not quite glitch free yet which is kinda strange

tomy any idea when the new offical firmware update is going to be released? and is there any chance you could post a link to the 7 day epg on sat which you say is quiet stable please.

also will you really be able to watch terristeal while recording sat and vice versa on the new update

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,568 ✭✭✭zg3409

There is no WP95SAT-Hd thread so I will post here. I was using one recently. It has 7 day guide as standard. I believe it was bought in powercity. I did not connect a hard drive so I am not sure of recording options.

It has 2 modes "SatFree" and "other mode" SatFree is FreeSat ripoff with same channel numbers and 7 day guide. Generally I would recommend people buy a genuine Freesat box as this will ensure all options will work reliably both in the short term and the long term.

Hi Guys, I have this walker saorview/freeview box. Has anyone tried using the recording option ? What device harddrive/usb key would be best for this? I currently have an iomega screenplay+ which Ive some movies & photos stored - is it possible to use it to store the recordings. Ive tried it and it recognises it but it says there is not enought space to start recording (There is loads of space on it). I dont want to buy another harddrive if this can be used.

    Thanks for your help

HI Tony, ive seen one of these with the new patch and seems to work very well, if the recording options are sorted i could really see these boxes taking off.Do you know if their TV's can take this patch and have the freesat guide etc

I'm not sure to be honest as I've only heard about the patch through a third party as its not supported by Walker themselves. A sat only box was released with the 7 day guide in error but I believe this was an oversight at the factory in Turkey where they are made.

I was in a TV shop in the South East yesterday and the owner called up Brian from Walker and they confirmed to him that they are indeed working on a fix for the recording issue, or lack of it should I say. They weren't able to give a date but they did say they are looking into ways of having a 7 day EPG for UK TV.

I'm now told there will be no 7 day freesat guide patch for the tv's unfortunately
