Seems like a unnecessarily lengthy process. You'd swear it was actually important rather than a forum on the internet...

Have you read any of the other requests in the forum? :pac:
They seem to get a lot of requests like "Can you create this forum that me and my two mates would like? Can you create this forum that expands a single not-very-busy thread in another forum? Can you create this forum that duplicates the content of four other forums, three of which I didn't know existed?"

It would be good if there was a fast-track process for forum requests that were demonstrably serious, because of a poll, or mod support, or whatever.... but how long would it take Boards to set up that process?:D

Should we try and organise a Referendum for this, it might get done quicker? Just flick the darn switch already...

Verging on stupid at this stage, is it not clear that there is enough traffic? Sure they even have a mustard forum!!

I sent a message only today so I'll update you all as to what I hear back.

There's no-one there, its practically empty. I say we wait another week, and if we don't have our own forum by then, we call "Triathlon" by codename "Mustard", and stake our claim over there.

There would be riots though when someone dared to say that English mustard is the superior variety.

The Mustard forum was created at a time when boards was about 2% the size it is now. When the admins could create forums on a whim (or after a drunken night out in the Porterhouse and an argument over mustard on a sandwich).

There's more behind the scenes stuff involved in creating a forum than there was then. It has to be created at a certain time of the day too, to avoid issues with the running of the site.

I reckon we'll have lift off sooner rather than later.

Request status has changed to APPROVED

    That's all I know...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,910 ✭✭✭couerdelion

It looks like all the sub forum requests have been removed? Either that or I'm blind.
So will they all be done in one go or will they need to be requested again once we get the new forum?

    Right, here's the deal

    Triathlon forum

    Gear & Equipment subforum

    Training Logs subforum

    Events subforum

    Adventure Races subforum

Voting is open on each of these requests for the next 6 weeks. To vote, go to one/all of the threads and reply. Keep it simple, +1 for yes, -1 for no

I separated out the different subforums into different requests, and didn't include shotgunmcos as moderator in the request, because of that conditional support thing. Just vote yes or no on the proposal in the opening post.

After 6 weeks, if there is enough support (+18 votes), the admins and Cmods will discuss the idea.
    (process details are here)

I'll post this in the main A/R/T forum now (with a bit more background)

January, February, March, April, May, June, July.......

Admins have got back to me and has lit a fire under them so should be in the next few weeks just depending on exactly how long it takes to set up the forum (seemed to have slipped through the cracks)

Yep heard from Admins myself also. Forum approved, just admin stuff to do. A few weeks. So, I have the ART charter printed off and some notes made myself relevant to a Tri/AR forum and general updating.

If any of you, Mods alike, have charter recommendations feel free to PM me.

Also, if someone with time on their hands would like to compile a known list of ahem, taboo tri threads, I can provisionally display in the charter too to help newbies understand.

(Absolutely not directed towards you MCOS, I really hope you're still interested when (if) this forum comes to pass)

Is there any point in helping towards a charter? Or "helping" Boards at large? Its pretty obvious any new forum will have to be dragged out kicking and screaming, from whichever mandarin controls the switch. The will is there, the interest is there, the numbers are there: still no forum.

Some of us may know what happened to the poker forum on here. Just saying like.

It is very strange that it has taken so long. I was admin on a forum a few years ago, admittedly not as big as this one but if we were setting up a new forum we just went into the control panel, filled in a few boxes, ticked another couple of boxes and hey presto. There it was. From reading the site development forum, seemingly they're moving away from the vbulliten format, presumably they're coding their own forum software - the new beta skin possibly already is part of the move away? Maybe thats where the issue lies?

Anyway, boards isn't about the users. It's a profitable business now. Long time since boards was about the 'community'.

    What happened?

Last time ecoli asked, they said that they could only make this sort of change during off-peak hours. Apparently there are all sorts of linkages in the background and one change can have a cascading effect, so they can't do it while the site is busy. And then they need to have an admin who is awake during those hours, and not busy with something else that has to be done off-peak (like all the look and feel changes)

Yet there was no problem setting up this subforum?

Still makes no difference to me whether it's a subforum or a standalone forum. Just seems very unecessarily drawn out.

Things here seem to be done in order of importance. This, clearly, is not important. I've seen similar with another specialist forum that was due to be set up, and a lot of effort put into it. Years later, and it never happened. Everyone involved on mod level has simply given up, and to be honest, I no longer imagine that admin level does what we want or ask for anymore, the beast is too big to cater for the likes of us minions.

Not so. Mods are like buses. If you miss one another will be along in a minute. I've seen many, many supposedly indispensible posters and mods leave the site and it chugs along anyway.
