    There is no shortage of greys thats for sure. However the Martens are very rare or at least sightings are. So until they reach a point where they are as commonly sighted as mink, greys, etc i'd say they are not so abundant.

    But again different areas, different numbers.

    Guys I am not far from Mullingar, on the Meath/Westmeath border and there are plenty of them down here.

    Huge increase in numbers in my area as well! Caught and released five last year, and three this year from the mink cages, and lot's of sightings too! Beautiful animal that is very much protected, and we all need to respect that!
    The gray squirrel has vanished from these parts too, so there must be some truth in what's been said!
    To the OP, if it was a pine Marten, he was probably after the dog's dinner!

    Lads/ladies.

    Can we bear in mind that, even accidentally, trapping Pine Martens is illegal unless done so under license & supervision of the NPWS. The thread so far has kept a good and reasoned debate on them, with no one advocating any sort of illegal activity, and to keep it that way it is best to remember what can or more importantly cannot be done, and by association what can, and cannot be discussed on an open forum.

    In relation to Pine Marten it is illegal to;
    • Trap
    • Shoot
    • Hunt
    • Disturb environment
    • Re-Locate
    Some things can be done, however as said above only under the most strict of supervision and guidelines, and with the necessary licenses from the relevant authorities.

    Hopefully some day they will make them an unprotected species/pest like they are doing with a species in England,the Cormorant which is protected since 1980s. They are destroying fish stocks and other wildlife. It seems to be going ahead
