Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm really confused about this.In class we do hardly anything and my geography teacher is often missing which doesn't help either.. :/ Anyways,i'm just wondering how much time on average should be spent on each part of the geography paper, and how much on average should be written for each essay? Sat the geography mock last week and lets just say it didn't go very well for our class :/ Would appreciate any feedback :)

I only know that the 30mark questions should be written under 15mins, in class we do them in 12mins to allow for stress on the day. Theyre meant to be about a page and a half depending on your writing size, they should include 14 SRPs anyway :)

    Thanks :)

One more thing..this might seem like a stupid question ...
For the option question i.e geoecology ,wht are they referring to when they say to deal with 3-4 topics rather than giving them a superficial treatment of the points ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 62 ✭✭monkeysarecool

I think it means that, for example if you were writing about the desert biome you have long paragraphs on climate, soil, flora, fauna and talk about them in depth as opposed to just writing 3 non structured pages?

I get it now, thanks for the help :)

No problem at all! Geography is one of the few subjects where I actually have a good teacher. If you have any other questions just ask

What essay would i have to learn for geography in order to be covered. I do Geoecology and the human elective. Any help would be extremly useful!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,073 ✭✭✭David1994

I have am studying Geography at the moment and was thinking is there any way to shortcut sections and learn answers that are likely to come up? I looked through each year and there is potentially about 30 answers to be learnt :(

I want an A1 in june and am a very good Geography student but am getting stresses at the moment!

If anyone has some general tips that would be great :D

Yes anyone please help! Geography SRPs are just horrible! For geography you seem to have to learn soooo much to answer so little! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭kilianmanning

well for geoecology we covered characteristics of soil:D I find it so easy really hope it comes up in June, was fairly ****ed when it didn't come up in the mocks.. we did deforestation also

My teacher reckons that either a biome or human effects on soil are dead certs!! Personally hoping the biome pops up  As for Human environment, its always difficult to narrow down, I tried and failed to do that during the mocks :(

We didn't do the human elective, only Geoecology, which is considered easier though?

What are the main questions that I should be learning. I have the Sue Honon revision book, should I learn all them off or is there any ones which are unlikely to come up. Which ones are expected to come up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 carnibell

Learn either human interaction with rocks or with rivers. The 2 of them always come up in different questions :)

    Thanks for the replies,

Just wondering do we need to learn Primary. Secondary and Tertiary activities for BMW, Brazil, Paris and Mezzogiorno. Are we able to leave out one of Paris/Mezzogiorno.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,572 ✭✭✭Canard

Definitely cant leave any out after last year, its likely theyll ask you to contrast the two in some way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 carnibell

Do you think it's safe just to study biomes? The questions in the exam papers always have either 2 soils and 1 biome question or 1 soil and 2 biomes. Soils is boring

I doubt it. There's going to be a few shake-ups with the Leaving this year, the SEC has been talking about it for years. And anyway 2 Biome Questions came up last year so I wouldn't be surprised for if there were no Biomes on the paper at all. Even last year with the Characteristics of Biome Question, you could only talk about 3 aspects whereas people usually prepared 4 aspect with 6 SRP'S each. Instead they had to try and squeeze an extra 2 SRP'S out of each aspect minimum to get anywhere near the full marks. Plus if they didn't get minimum 8 SRP'S per aspect and the SRP'S were really thrown together on the day, the candidates lost nearly all the OC marks!

Not trying to be pessimistic here, but i'd imagine we'll be up for a few changes from the Normal Paper layouts for every subject this year

It's all boring tbh! :(. Still, it's a handy enough A2 with a bit of work! #here's hoping!

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 carnibell

I like most of the course it's not the worst subject out there. Yeah I'd love an A2 in it

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 carnibell

yeah its hard to know what to study there's too much on the course. What electives and options are you doing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,073 ✭✭✭David1994

Doing biomes and soils for option...and Human Geography for elective.
    What are you doing??

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 carnibell

is the desert biome easier than the rainforest biome?

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 carnibell

geoecology and economic geography. Whats human geog like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,073 ✭✭✭David1994

Its pretty handy to be honest.Migration is nearly always a guaranteed question which makes it easier.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 carnibell

thats not that bad :) there's a good few questions in economic geog but there not hard :D

Learn primary and secondary from Paris
then learn off about 8 or 9 srps from them in Mezzogiorno.. Its not too bad!:)

Watch pop distribution in an Irish Region and development of one tertiary activity in an irish region.. seems like one of them will appear (trend)

Merged a few of the geography essay threads here to keep it all together! :)

Last years paper was pretty hard, even some of the short questions I think it's worth learning Isostatic incase it shows up again this year.

Most of my answers for the 15rps tend to be about 2 pages or should it be less?

If you can get it done in 12mins then yes it's ok. Personally mine are a little less but on the day my writing is so messy it usually ends up 2 pages! :)

I've been timing myself when writing the answers. If I know it I'll be able to write it fast. I just hope it's not like last years paper, it was so hard .

Yeah I nailed my timing in the mocks. Got everything done with 40 mins spare for regional. I hadn't really studied regional so I decided to make up my answers and hey I got full marks in them.:) Timing is just so crucial in geography.

I know so much to write. I didn't have mocks this year so I'm not sure how I'm doing. But I've done more study than last year. I might just try and test myself someday to see how much I remember.

What do you think will come up for the economic elective if you're doing it? I hope colonisation is there somewhere

I'd study that and globalisation, EU policies and non-renewable energy (2010 was the adv's of renewables so my teacher thinks they might twist it the other way). With the kyoto protocol expiring this year hes convinced the environment will come up too haha. And MNCs of course :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 carnibell

i love this elective its not that hard ha ye MNCs sure thats grand :D

Quick question - for a question on human activities with biomes, could I just use the exact same answer as for human activities with soil and say its the impact on the Sahel which is a desert biome? I have the headings overcropping, overgrazing and deforestation prepared in detail.

I had only about 20/30 minutes left for the electives and options questions. I had 80 percent before them, but it went down to 63 in the end as I answered them 2 badly. Not to bad as our teacher said we could add around 10 percent as it was marked badly. But I have to get timing right next time.

Could someone put up a list of what physical and regional essays should be known for the exam ..would be greatly appreciated! :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 stapler10

    For physical im doing
Explain how plate tectonics help us to understand the occurence of earthquakes (2006)
The formation of one rock cycle and how it can produce a distinctive landscape - sedimeantary (2008)
Human interaction with the rocy cylce - Quarrying
Human interaction with the rocy cylce - Geothermal
Landform development created by deposition - Beach
Landform development created by deposition and/or eroison - Meander
Human interaction with surface processes - HEP Ardnacrusha
Human interaction with surface processes - Mass Movement
    Karst Landscape

    For regional:
Primary, secondary and teritary in BMW,Paris Basin and Brazil
    Culture in Belgium
    Urban growth in Sub continental
    EU

Ya so thats what im doing I hope it helps, does anybody reckon that is enough to cover both physical and regional, if not what other essay would I need to learn, thanks :)

Just wondering, why're you doing two? :) I love geothermal, its so handy and easy to remember and it works well for explaining volcanoes too, but my teacher wants me to do quarrying and wont mark my geothermal answer :(

Why on earth are you doing two of each? You won't be asked to explain 2 will you? I'm almost certain they won't ask you to explain two landforms created by deposition, two interactions with the "rocy" cycle or two interactions with surface processes. Why are doing this?

Is anyone else learning the answers in the exam skills book?
I'm using some answers from there , sometimes I mix it and use things from the text book or I try to put it into my own words. But for the physical like plate tectonics it's so much simpler than whats in my book.
I wrote down a list of answers I need to learn earlier , it's mostly whats at the front of the exam papers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 35 lauzie2011

I'm learning answers from that book as well but adding in extra material from my book ..my teacher is hopeless..that book is my only hope :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,572 ✭✭✭Canard

The book cant save me from the option section, though its saving me for everything else :')
