Is there a simple way to transfer over contacts from iPhone to the HTC One?

The best thing about switching from iPhone to android is that Google is now your friend :-)

I want to be able to set up a profile on this phone that will just beep once if I get a call or get a text message. I can not figure out how to do this. Anyone any ideas? I have the three profiles, Normal, Silent and Vibrate, but would like this as a fourth one.

Just brought the HTC One yesterday and I'm looking for a decent cover as the odds of dropping it are quite high! Any suggestions?

Got this one. Well made and quick delivery (Parcel Motel).

Just bought it, it was unlocked too. Very happy with it, should last me a few years as a testing device for work. I'll still have my iPhone 5 day to day though.

Ah miralize, that last sentence just kills me.

    You serious?

    Interesting... http://www.modaco.com/page/news/_/android/htc-one-google-edition-for-the-us-imminent-r1110

Hopefully if this does come to pass it will mean that existing models will also be able to support AOSP ROMs nice and cleanly. Not that I'm against Sense either.

Looks interesting. I've never been a huge fan of AOSP as you lose proprietary features such as the image sense camera.

Have been running a beta of Viper for the One recently. That will keep me leaning towards sense based ROMs.

Would it not be possible for HTC to provide a standalone camera app with Sense functionality along with the Stock ROM?

Agreed. I guess one of the best things about this development is that if HTC do continue their trend of discontinuing software upgrades after ~2 years at least the option might be there to continue with Android upgrades albeit without Sense.

Also looking forward to ViperOne here. Is there any ETA on the beta release and in your opinion do you think it would be worthwhile jumping ship from TrickDroid or give it some time to mature?

I personally think it's good enough to release. The only bugs that affected me day to day were rotation of home screen getting messed up and the status bar themes not working properly. There's a lot of features which aren't working, but a lot that makes it worth releasing: on the fly toggle reordering, vertical quick settings, icon theming etc.

Dunno what the trickdroid guys are gonna do.... They're part of team venom. I guess they will keep trickdroid up to date.

Does anyone know if you can change the rotation on the One? If I play games or watch videos, they all rotate the same way. Unfortunatley, it rotates away from the charger, so the cable is being pulled across the back of it.

I had that problem last night, had to download a rotation manager app.

    Argh!

Does it allow you to customise the direction of each app before its launched?

Location on my clock says London. I'm in Dublin now.

When I do get it to say Dublin, London still shows in the lock screen

So does anyone who got the One regret not buying the S4?

No, not in the slightest. Had a go of 2 s4s over the last week and don't like the interface or the hardware feel.
Power and feature wise they are for me identical (enough to matter) so the difference for me is design.

The thing is, I've had 3x HTC's now and they are great at the start but after 6-9 months they just get slow and laggy. I've regretted not buying samsung several times in the past. I like the removable cover/battery on the S4. Battery is a huge factor for me. I'm not that bothered about the build quality - the S4 is good enough for me.. I'm still undecided

How about anyone else what factors made you decide?

I'm coming from a Galaxy S3 to HTC One and it's by far and away the best phone I've ever had, looks great and the speed and battery life rocks.

I was originally dead set on moving to the S4 but ultimately ended up getting the One and i've no regrets.

I've had both phones for a few days now and here's the pros and cons relative to each other.
    • Colours are a tad more saturated on the S4. Everything seems crisper on the One. Both are beautiful screens in their own right, they're just different.
    • The S4's camera is better outdoors in bright daylight, the HTC One holds it own but for landscapes and the like 4MP has nothing on 13MP. The One's camera is much better in low light and indoors in general. When it comes to video, I prefer the One for its stabilisation.
    • When it comes to how the phone is built and feels... the One and S4 I have are both flawlessly built with no apparent defects like you'd find in the early batches. As for the how the phone looks and feels in the hand, the One looks and feels far better. It's remarkable. The One makes you stop and say "that's one great looking/feeling phone". The S4 doesn't, it feels and looks like every other Samsung smartphone. That said, the Galaxy S4 is very slightly lighter than the One.
    • The speaker on the S4 are a horror on the ears relative to the stereo speakers on the One. The One is loud, well-balanced, detailed and stereo separation is great. It's probably even better than most laptops.
    • When it comes to software... I actually quite like Blinkfeed. It's aesthetically pleasing and it's more or less a very nice widget alternative to Flipboard. The S4's offerings are cool but aren't always very practical. S Voice is pretty cool but the more important voice controls relating to music, navigation, texting and calling work just as well on the One.
    • Touchwiz is cartoonish and very different to stock Android (and not always in a good way). Sense UI feels lighter and far more classy than Touchwiz.
    • Touchwiz occasionally stutters but Sense UI (for the first time) is incredibly responsive. It's been nearly two weeks now and regardless of how much was running on the phone, i've never once seen it drop a frame, stutter or freeze. It's more responsive than stock Android and classier/better-looking to boot. That said, Touchwiz has those quick toggles but so does stock Android and so will the One eventually.
    • Battery life: The One is very, very good compared to the S4. Both phones see equal use every day and are charged at the end of every day. The One ends the day at 40-50% and the S4 ends the day at 20-30%. Both will last a full day but the One is a lot more frugal.

How can Sense be more responsive than stock android? Surely nothing can be more responsive than the stock experience? Everything else it's just an overlay that can just slow it down, even if it's imperceptible. I can't believe that if the One is released with stock it won't be as responsive as the version with Sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,992 ✭✭✭✭partyatmygaff

It feels more responsive than my Nexus 7 anyway. Getting it to stutter is almost impossible whereas the Nexus 7 does occasionally. Truthfully, I haven't tried stock Android on the One, the responsiveness may just be due to the One having more CPU power/RAM than the Nexus 7 but I don't think so.

I'd agree. I wouldn't have been a fan of Sense on previous phones but they've nailed it this time.

I'd put that down to the better hardware on the One to be honest. I'm not slating Sense or the One - I've only ever owned HTC smartphones - I just have a hard time believing that a phone running on Sense would be more responsive than the same phone running stock.

Really enjoyed the rest of your comparison as I'm upgrading from the One X and haven't decided between the S4 or the One yet.
