Not much different to Dublin Port pilots having to take ships in and out of Dun Laoghaire.

They're upgrading the pilots cutters with new ships http://wwwe.loodswezen.nl/en/news/issue-11-navigator-nl-online/1726,212/

Check out the track history on the CIELO DI SAN FRANCISCO

Can anyone overlay that position onto a chart? 13kn to 06.kn in a very short space sounds, eh, interesting...

    Yep, she's aground!

She's in motion now, must have successfully refloated.

How does a 2011 ship with a modern array of technology end up going aground?

Saw her out there yesterday from Killiney, did not pay much attention, quite hazy but could just see mast superstructure so thought it had something to do with drilling/windfarms or was waiting (unusual place) for the tide at Dublin. It looked as if she was well outside the banks but I guess she hit the outside southerly end of the Codling?

The 2/O draws a line over a sandbank and the captain signs off the passage plan without looking at it.

Or someone decides to take a short cut and deviates from the agreed plan.

Remember being told at college that the modules "Electronic navigation aids" must always be treated as just that. These systems are Aids to navigation, not primary.

Purely personnel observations but more technology have seen installed the less many bridge officers seem to bother to look out the windows.

Due to anchor off Port of Cork later tonight. Maybe just extreme lay-by?

She's been at anchor there all week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,547 ✭✭✭✭Poor Uncle Tom

I hadn't had a chance to check all week. I don't know why, I just like this boat ship.

the tanker Sichem Hong Kong has been anchored off Bray Head for the last week (and was previously anchored there for a long time in August), apparently waiting "for orders".

Is this unusual to have a ship sitting about at sea for such a long time, must be losing somebody money... also what do the crew do when anchored for long periods like this - can they get ashore?

  • Registered Users Posts: 714 ✭✭✭islanderre

When @ anchor for periods like that, maintenance both deck and engine side get taken care of. In my experience at least, it was usually @ the captains discretion if shore leave was available...... sone were better than others at granting it too. Getting security clearance could be an issue too.

Depends on a lot of different factors but a lot of the time it's down to the price of commodities. As for coming ashore, not really the practice. The messiness of liberty boats and the added risk of having crew going and coming ashore isn't worth the headache for the old man. What do the crew do? Same thing they would do if they were underway, some sound captains might give Sundays off like when you are along side, a lot don't.

Spent many a weekend at anchor off the Humber, or worse, at Lay-By in Europort. May as well be at anchor for the latter as usually you tied up against some ancient rustbucket with the dodgiest looking gangway, which usually hovered about 5 foot above the quayside at high tide.
If you did go ashore, the nearest pub/shop was the seamans mission, 12 miles away in Petroleumhaven somewhere.

At least they're close to shore, I've drifted south of the Canaries, off the Cape Verde, South China Seas. They'll have tv and phone reception and the calender gets ticked off to paying off regardless of how you spend your time.

So she was at Whitegate for the last few days, left earlier this morning and is going to Anchor now again where she was last week. It is possible that her movements may have something to do with the maintenance phase that the refinery is in the middle of.

Polarcus Amani left Cork earlier, heading for Montevideo. Possibly the oddest looking vessel to visit in recent times.

Just posting this as the rumour mill is going overtime.

    http://new.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/247297100

This is apparently ICG's new ship which will be joining the fleet in the coming weeks/months on the Dublin-Holyhead route. It has been moved around the port of Messina the past few weeks awaiting its fate.

Anyone heard any confirmation of this?

She's back again, out there since yesterday afternoon 'for orders'.
