I wonder if it was a banker who had stroked 1.5 million would all these good people be on here saying how terrible it was that he got 6 years.

    He should have got more.

    Got more? Seriously?

He should be made pay back what he owes but instead he is going to jail where he will cost the taxpayer a few hundred thousand more for his stay. That is just retarded....

Surprised Joe hasn't gone pun-tastic yet.

Paul Begley had been convicted of scamming the tax system.

    This should not be broadcast

If he's paying it all back, so willingly - maybe he should've considered paying it all in the first place.

There has to be a deterrent to chancing your arm until you're caught.

That is the attitude to Tax and Company law in this country.

If you catch me, I'll pay it back and everything will be alright.

It is all wrong and anyone who commits Tax Fraud deserves their punishment.

He should declare if he knows this Paul Begley. He doesn't sound at all objective on the case.

Insignificant amount of money??? Just over a million is insignificant???

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,730 ✭✭✭europa11

It was quite a hilarious story, sadly!

He'll be appealed and sentence reduced, I'm sure.

The bloke who defrauded the state for 248,000 on the dole...got 12 years.

    1.5 million = 72 years

You're in the industry and are into your EU conspiracy theories and you don't know the reason why there's such a high tax ? Protectionism for the EU producers.

As sentence has been passed that cannot be said. The Minister for Justice
isn't going to repeal the sentence after all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

This is the most unjust and ridiculous sentence ever handed down by our "justice" system..

I think it is actually more morally wrong that Mary Hanafin, Bertie Ahern, Mary Coughlan etc all take pensions of >120K from the State that they helped destroy...

Then who cares what these people opinions are and why are we being forced to listen to it?

How many bankers have been jailed? They've cost the tax payers tens of billions, not a million. I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished, but there seems to be something off about the justice system in relation to this case.
