True enough, pity it's gone though as it was a handy overtaking spot on late running taras like the Skerries loop. The loop they added at Clongriffin has never been used as far as I know after taking nearly 2 years to commission the points and removing and reinstalling the blades twice in the process.

Well that situation might change now that Mosney is no longer available, Clongriffin might get more use, although Mosney was very strategically located, but then so is Clongriffin within the Dart Northern Suburban.

But why what benefit will it have?

Less points on the network mean less maintenance for them and their associated signals. The removed points can be used elsewhere on the network, which in turn is a saving as they are extremely expensive to purchase from new.

Speeds may be increased when points are no longer in situ and when train blocks are lengthened; well in theory at least they can.

Fair point about speeds but largely pointless as the line is largely 80 now? and the 29 have a max of 75.

084 I think anyway is coupled to the auto ballasters in portarlington in the siding with 231 sitting at the other end not coupled to them.

Seeing that 076 is now back from the photo thread after a long stay at Inchicore does anyone know if it got normal GM power unit back or is it still going around with the Swedish unit.

Only back and let the class down when it failed at Cherryville with the IWT yesterday causing major delays to/from Heuston.

072 had to be taken off a timber due to it lacking power a few days ago.

What is the deal with the Swedish unit in 076? A newish change or long standing?

The original engine popped a piston through the block. Was thought to be a write-off so a replacement engine was sought. However I was once told that they did manage to repair it and this engine is now in 081, since about 2007 or so.

You can hear the difference in the engines, 076 sounds more like a 111, the way the 071s used to sound.

Anyone see 083 lately. I've no record of it in a while. Is it in for overhaul maybe?

083 with a nice set of bogies, worked today's 9.20 Tara, only 6 wagons, must be changing over the ore possibly from lead to zinc, 078 failed on last night's Tara, hauled to Inchicore this morning by 218, 086 worked the IWT.

I was thinking there was a failure last night as a freight livery 071 went north through Killester light engine around 23:35, that is usually the path of the last empty working tara of the night.

Failed in Skerries Loop, 083 went to the rescue and hauled the train with 078 to North Wall.

084 - a possible candidate to haul us out of Ballina tomorrow ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,174 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

083 LE passed Killester at 20:25, don't know what happened it's laden tara train. I noted it's new bogies and the it's cooling fan roof covers are all orange and so is the roof fan panel. Look like that section was replaced to stored spare parts.

Strange is got that much work done and not the full overhaul while it was in Inchicore.

Faulty/damaged parts replaced from spares after initial repaint, was not due the full overhaul AFAIK.

She was creating some amount of exhaust as she climbed out of Waterford earlier so it wouldn t be a bad call.

078 is having bad week. Two failures. At least it gets more 071s involved.

Makes you wonder was it worth getting these refurbished, there seems to be breaking down constantly.

They're more reliable than they're modern equivelants. #074 hauled a fully laden DFDS liner today and ran very well in fact up the gradient into ballyhale.
