Sitting in Ballina yard when id drove by at around 7pm was 075 with the empty timber train, and alongside was 230 with the IWT liner. The branch railcar(2809/10) was not there at the time.

Returning from Bray, earlier today on the DART, and en route to Harmonstown, I noted 082 stopped at the top of the bank at East Wall/Church Road awaiting clearance on to the main line. I hopped off at Harmonstown at about 2PM. and waited for about 5 minutes, and sure enough I could hear her approaching in the distance. What a sound - unique amongst the others of the same class. :D

The usual GM heavy beat, but it's overlaid with a loud whine, presumably the turbocharger. All in all, it's quite loud when the power is on.

Here's a comparison I linked to before. I'm not sure why it sounds different but the fact it doesn't kick in until notch 5 or so would lead me to believe it's related to the turbocharger. On EMD 645E3 engines, the turbocharger is mechanically driven until roughly 600 rpm when there's sufficient exhaust pressure to drive it from the exhaust gases alone and this is the range between notch 4 and notch 5.

Somebody might be able to answer this or might not.

How long can the 071s last ? The twelve that were overhauled Im guessing would be in better shape than the six that werent, but as a class overall how much longer can/could IR keep them running ? I mean they are thirty five years old and have been in service almost all of those years bar one in the eighties.

The 071's were expected to be around for about 30 years of useful service, pretty much the same as most diesels are. Any longer than that is a bonus. The GM's all gave longer than 30 years so the money's worth was gotten out of them and then some. With TLC, spare parts and suitable duties to keep them busy, they could be kept running for another 10-15 years no bother.

I checked back and it was in the eighties that the 071s had to removed from duties due to cracks in the bogies. Surely GM knew that cie were using the 121s and the 141/181s on passenger trains but then the 071s were a longer and heavier loco than the others.

I have a CIÉ locomotive drivers manual from 1980 which lists the 141/181 and 071 as all having a top speed of 89mph. Only the 121 was listed as 77mph max.

It wasn't the duties but the excess duties that they were put under. The bogies and set up were road tested for about 70MPH top speed, 50MPH hauling monster weight trains around the 750 Kilotonne range. CIE had them working passenger trains at over 90 MPH and freight trains around about 1 mega tonne at 60MPH. GM engineers were shocked at how hard they were thrashed so some remedial work was called for :D

082 on the UP laden Tara passed through Killester 11.30 approx. Very quiet this morning - engine seemed to be idling or on a minimum setting.

They are always like that at Killester laden. They just mosey from there to East Wall junction, it's mainly down hill. With all the 25mph speed restrictions all over the place from Killester to Clongriffin I don't get to hear much of 071 these days.

On a quiet night I can hear 082 power out of East Wall up the curve and then I see it about 15 mins later at Clongriffin, just as they pass the station at the last speed restriction zone I can hear it power up as it heads out to Malahide.

1 mega tonne = one million tonnes. Assuming 40 tonnes in a 40 foot container (about one tonne per foot of train), that's a train 300km long - Cork-Dublin is only 265km.

Yeah, it was a kilo tonne I meant, not a mega tonne.

I thought it might be due to the gradient ok. I live just off the Malahide Road, about a mile from both HJ and Harmo, and on quiet nights I often hear a 071 around half past midnight. Is this a Tara ? Nice kind of lullaby to have !!! :D

East Wall is five miles from Clongriffin - amazing that you can hear 082 that far away, but I don't doubt it. As I said above it is 'quite loud' when notched up. 'Waken the dead' would be a more accurate description. :D

Yeah you can hear a notched up 071 from a few miles off, at night even more so and if the wind is blowing the right way. 082 is a right howler, some nights I can hear it leaving East Wall and then nothing till it gets to around HJ.

The last tara passes me at Clongriffin between 23:30 and 00:30, depends if it gets out before the last DART to Malahide. There is usually an empty 22k stock movement that heads out before or sometimes after the tara.

Got a quick snap of 082 today. Passed HJ with 11 laden at 11:34. As it got to Kilbarrack it notched up a bit and began to make it's signature sound.

141s managed 50 years more or less and one is still limping around Inchicore (isn't it?) so potentially they have until 2025 left in them.

It was in Inchicore for new bogies back in Feb and nothing since. I don't recall seeing about. There are a number of 071s off the radar. 084 is the latest to go into hiding.

134 is there but hasn't turned a wheel in years. I believe there's still the odd 141 on works pilot duties though.

    What are "pilot duties"???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,603 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

    What are "pilot duties"???

essentially towing stock around the yard as required. In inchicore this would be bouth carriages and locos under overhaul, from shed to shed and so forth. It could also be sent out to collect the RPSI stock from the likes of Heuston / Connolly etc and return it to Inchicore

    So a shunter then.

Exactly, they would also be occasional used to assist a heavy train on a stretch of line, 'banking' as it was, on the front or rear, though the practice disappeared in the early 1970s. This once regularly occurred on the North Wall-Liffey Jct section of line for goods trains.

082 was on the same tara link (11:30 at HJ) again today which is odd, they usually alternate every day. I was hoping to get the other 071 loco as I don't know what's on the other one.

Not great shots, I couldn't get the light settings right as the sun kept coming out of cloud cover rapidly with the heavy gusting winds.

086 is the other loco today, passed Ladies Stairs, Skerries, laden at 11.00 approx. Youtube video on its way - unfortunately the number doesn't show on the video, so confirmed it later at Killester when she passed back 'down' at 14:20 approx. Just prior to that 082 passed through Killester, at 14:05 approx. - 5 ??? laden. Very quiet indeed.
