News outlets pretty slow picking this up. I've been following it since 23:30 so it's not like it hasn't been noticed.

It's a real shame that it takes attacks like this to bring attention to a bill of this significance. I was on the Indo's website earlier and couldn't find anything after a quick look. I found out about it through boards and Facebook in the morning though.

This is why I feel these attacks are worthwhile. They'll raise awareness. You can be sure that every news outlet will have coverage of this on their sites tomorrow. That coverage will have to explain why it happened which will, hopefully, in turn drive people to http://stopsopaireland.com/ and put more pressure on the government.

It's just a pity the attacks didn't take place before the papers went to press.

It's not an official site, just anti-kenny as far as I'm aware.

I made this comment on www.tjmcintyre.com/2012/01/anonymous-attacks-on-ireland-will-hurt.html
and it was deleted in 10 minutes...
some way to defend "freedom of expression, privacy and other fundamental rights"

"Maybe someone should clarify this: anonymous are not hackers. It is a movement that tries to bring public attention to the problems that are commonly overlooked by public media (ever wandered why?)
Example: occupy wall street and 99% movement.
Methods they use and software they choose can be used by anyone who can use calculator on any computer with an internet access. Their power comes from their number not their knowledge or hacking skills. There are no systems in the world that can resist ddos “attack” from thousands of internet users simultaneously as never before so many people have done this at once they are completely unprepared for this. No data is being destroyed or stolen by anonymous. To simply explain this method you can compare it to spamming a website by using a small software tool.
Below recent true story on ASDA
Few days ago there were a few people in Poland aware of the fact that in a few days (26/01/12) polish government is going to sign ASDA in Tokyo. After similar attacks on polish government websites over in Poland the topic came to first pages of all national newspapers, tens of thousandths came out on the streets to protests. Online petition in Poland against ASDA has reached 120000 signatures and counting. But polish government remain deaf to the voice of its citizens and we will not forget that in next general elections. Even if they will sign it at least everyone will know that it happened and that our representatives failed to express the will of people they represent.
I’m not going to tell you to join anonymous case nor I’m going to ddos any Irish website. I’m foreign and I believe that even tho I live here since a while I have no right to even suggest you anything on how you should approach this matter. But if you are terrified of corporations trying to take away your freedom of speech just to make a bit more money and you are tired of politicians sending you back drafted emails in reply to your concerns, just use google and with a little bit of an effort you will find out where to go and what to do.
There are other ways to help the case use fb and twitter, email your friends, watch this video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8Xg_C2YmG0&list=LLlal7szUxxGLrMRrIzVDLIQ&feature=mh_lolz
like it share it do whatever you believe is best to make sure everyone knows what they are trying to do with our beloved internet"

At first I though it was due to a youtube link in it but it was to slow for an algorithm (at least in my opinion)

TJ knows who Anonymous are and why they're doing what they're doing.

His article is not questioning their intent or motives but whether or not the attacks will damage the cause.

He knows the nuances of the situation, he's one of the founders of the "Stop SOPA Ireland" movement. He probably felt your comment was not directly relevant to the topic at hand hence the deletion.

Just got this in my email inbox from IRISS (Irish Reporting and Information Security Service), its an organisation for security specialists.
    Irish websites targeted by Anonymous

Impact: Denial of Service, Unauthorised Access

Last night the hacktivist collective known as Anonymous announced OpIreland, a campaign to target Irish websites in protest against planned new copyright legislation due to be introduced by the Irish government later this month.

At the moment the main targets appear to be government websites with Justice.ie and Finance.gov.ie already attacked. It is not yet known if further attacks are planned or if any other additional websites will be included in the attack.

Additional details of the events last night are available on

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/0125/breaking7.html and

    http://www.thejournal.ie/government-websites-taken-offline-in-anonymous-opireland-attack-336623-Jan2012/

IRISSCERTrecommends that you conduct a risk assessment of their own website and infrastructure to determine if you could be a potential target. In particular, if your organisation is involved in supporting the legislation either directly or indirectly you may have a higher risk profile.

    Should you determine you are at risk then you should;

Ensure your systems are fully patched, this includes your firewalls, your operating systems, web server software and the web application software on your site.
Review all your firewall rules and ensure they are up to date and correct.
Ensure your log files are turned on, that they are recording key events and that you are actively monitoring them for suspicious activity
Look at deploying DDOS mitigation tools
Ensure all your passwords are secure passwords and are not re-used across multiple systems.
If you have Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) in place, ensure they are configured and working properly and are being monitored.
Have your incident response plan close by in the event that you are impacted.
The Department of Communications is currently coordinating a "whole of government" response to the attacks.

Thank you for using the Filtered Warnings Application

IRISS is closely connected to authorities and security minded people, so this is a pretty big deal if they're talking about it.

Response from Laura Real (Assistant to Liam Aylward MEP)

    Dear Mr O Beirne,

Thank you for your email outlining your opposition to ACTA. I will bring the points and concerns you have raised to the attention of Mr Aylward.

As you may be aware the European Commission has asked the European Council to authorise the signature for ACTA and then the European Parliament will be officially asked for consent. As ACTA is a mixed agreement - partly competence of the Member States - ratifications by national parliaments, including Ireland, will be required as well.

The European Parliament Committees that are responsible for this file - DEVE, INTA (Internal Market) and JURI (Legal Affairs) have already began preparatory work and have asked the Parliament legal service for opinion. We have been informed that the JURI Committee is currently checking the compatibility of ACTA with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The was concern among MEPs regarding the secrecy of the negotiations surrounding ACTA and there have been several Parliamentary questions on this issue, mostly calling for publication of the documents from negotiations.

Mr Aylward is not a member of the committees responsible for ACTA but his ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats) colleagues in these Committees have been to the forefront in asking for increased transparency and called for the European Commission to present all discussion documents, relevant studies and impact assessments on ACTA.

At present, clarification is still needed on the compatibility of ACTA with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights before a final position is taken. The MEPs are awaiting this and the feedback of their colleagues working directly on this file. Mr Aylward has received several emails from constituents concerned about the impact of this agreement on their livelihoods and access to information and will take these views into consideration ahead of full Plenary vote.

I trust this information will be of interest to you.

Response from Martin Ferris, gowan the shinners :)

For immediate release, Wednesday, January 25

Ferris calls for full debate and vote on internet legislation

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Communications, Martin Ferris TD has called on the Government to have a full debate in the Dáil on measures governing access to the internet. He was responding to an interview with the Minister responsible Seán Sherlock yesterday which Deputy Ferris said leaves many questions to be answered regarding the implications of the legislation.

Deputy Ferris said: “While the Minister is claiming that he needs to act in order to reflect both a recent Court judgement and two EU directives, he appears to be pretty vague regarding the implications of what he is proposing. Experts in the field are taking a diametrically opposed view to that of the Minister.

“There is understandable fear among both commercial and private users of the internet that this will leave the door open to actions that would severely restrict access to information if copyright holders can secure orders preventing it being made available.

“That would not only represent a significant attack on individual freedom but also a threat to a healthy sector of the Irish economy which has attracted major international players to locate here.

“In the interests of teasing all of this out I am calling on the Government to facilitate a debate and to present legislation that will require approval by the Oireachtas prior to any enactment. That would allow a full debate with meaningful inputs from all interested parties.”

He knows the nuances of the situation, he's one of the founders of the "Stop SOPA Ireland" movement. He probably felt your comment was not directly relevant to the topic at hand hence the deletion.

    What?
Believe it or not I do have a lot of respect to Mr.TJ McIntyre (that's why I was a bit shocked with this action as his website was the last place I expected this comment to be removed and I did placed it in a few other places that are much less orientated on defending freedom of speech)

    A) it was 100% directly relevant as it was created in response to his article and it was way more relevant and constructive then all the "well said" comments

    B) His article is speculating on how those "attacks" are going to be used by media and politicians, "making it easier for the music industry to spin critics as criminals, and giving unsympathetic politicians an easy, crowd pleasing reason to ignore the campaign. If the headlines shift from "New law threatens civil liberties" to "Hackers attack Irish government websites" then we will be on the back foot, jeopardising what's been achieved to date."

    I agree,

My point was that if you don't want that to happen you have to educate people and media that those guys are not hackers. Ddos attack has so much to do with hacking as adding 2 numbers in a calculator with programming
And this should be very clear to everyone that each and every one of you can become a 'hacktivist' or whichever way press is going to call it, after spending 10 minutes on google.
Those attacks will happen anyway so instead of crying over the fact that they might have a negative impact on the case, maybe, he should start wondering how to turn it back around. In my opinion making a statement that those people are bad and we don't want to have anything to do with their actions will only make things worst. Instead you can make sure that public do know the truth about anonymous movement so they can understand who and why is creating this minor disruption on the website that no one really visits anyway ;). Another important thing to say is that no harm is being done to anyone except of a few network administrators who might end up with a few extra gray hairs by the end of the week.

That is; the court must have that power, and it must be less than asking the ISP to actively monitor all traffic.
Is there a video of this anywhere, e.g. youtube, where I can see it?

As for the DDoS attacks: They will certainly raise publicity, but of the right kind?

Is the issue in the news going to be all about the website attacks i.e. "people opposing anti-piracy laws launch illegal attacks on government websites", thus distracting attention from the issue, and giving the government a way out:
"We won't be influenced by these terrible attacks against the government blahblah, and won't be bullied out of passing these laws"

So, is this going to help or just make things more difficult?

Note that in Poland, where ACTA (an 'international' version of SOPA, which also affects us) is about to be signed in, the government there have responded to the website attacks by saying things like "we don't give in to blackmail" etc..

Obviously, that spins things and ignores the bigger issue, but it gives an example of how these attacks can be used by government as an excuse to dig their heels in.

A DDOS equivalent of last night would be going up to the DoJ and DoF doors, sitting down and blocking entrance to the building. A DDOS does no permanent damage, and it's exactly like an internet sit-in.

Wait up tho, in Poland today there are 62 organised protests planned all over the country. Also the govt have said they will make amendments to the bill....whether they actually will or not is another thing...they also did something I've never heard of before, they admitted they were wrong to not consulate the public on ACTA. Hopefully protests today will make a difference.

Just seen this too......Minister Boni (awesome name) tried to defend himself saying the PL govt did consulte the public....however it's been found out that the only "public" he sent the ACTA document to were representatives of the recording/music industry

True but the point of those attacks was not to force government to do anything. It was to warn people of what government has agreed to sign behind the closed doors. After those "attacks" there were massive demonstrations and a series of protests in most of major cities in Poland (vast majority of those people 48hours ago did not had a clue what sort of legislation is coming their way). No one sane is expecting a government to allow a bunch of internet users to force them to change their plans. But there are thousands of polish citizens who came out on the streets to show the government that they will be very unhappy about them if this legislation will go through. And if they won't listen to them they can say good bay to a lot of votes on next election day, and that is the sort of a pressure you need to oposse to corporations lobbying

TJ knows who Anonymous are and why they're doing what they're doing.

His article is not questioning their intent or motives but whether or not the attacks will damage the cause.

He knows the nuances of the situation, he's one of the founders of the "Stop SOPA Ireland" movement. He probably felt your comment was not directly relevant to the topic at hand hence the deletion.

everybody knows the one thing anonymous is not about is being nice or getting people on their side his conservative side shone, when bus drivers go on strike they inconvenience alot of people they receive a negative backlash from the public which the government take advantage of but its still a legitimate way to fight unreason when reason has failed or is being bypassed as in this case.

Yea, I agree. I think Palikot will clean up at next election. I live there, I'll be protesting in Katowice tonight! It might not change anything but it's worth a try....ACTA can still be stopped by MEPs AFAIK
