I know it was fricking cold out there tonight, well where I was running at least, but why out of the probably 20'ish people that ran past me the other way did only one of them wave back? It is grim conditions, but be a bit sociable people and that may ease the pain.

first proper 10miles of the year done today! 78mins, was on target for easily doing 75, but dropped the pace frm 45mins-65mins and was on my own frm 50mins on, but with somebody for the whole 10, 75 should be easy

Course they count every mile has a purpose be it at easy/ hard / recovery pace. Even though my natural easy pace is closer to 7 min miles I regularly do recovery runs around 9 min pace and slower and these miles are just as important in training as my sessions. Training is like a jigsaw it takes alot of different pieces to complete the puzzle

T Runner does know that the challenge is to get the 1,000 miles in during the year, not just the month right?? :D

well he works in metric* so he's probably going for 10,000k in the year :)

    *like all right-thinking people

    w00t

Jumped 24 places up the table today thanks to my first longish run of the year. Probably longer than I should have gone considering the mileage done so far, but there was cake and coffee in the shop at the end so that makes it all good.

    Aaaaargh...

Was quite happy with the mileage so far this year. 60miles in two weeks and feeling good. Would have been quite happy to keep that ticking over with a bit more as the long runs pick up a bit, but alas my foot is saying no.

Peroneal Tendonitis on my left foot. Bloody sore and I've already had a week of doing nothing and no signs of it getting better soon. Nurofen, R.I.C.E & a crutch to take the weight of it but no improvement.

Anyone have experience of timeframe on this for getting back on the road?

Quiet at work at the moment so got a completely excessive 77 miles in this week. My highest weekly milage ever. Cant help thinking its too much, certainly for January.

With all the tables around here, surely I should be able to stick my 77 miles up somewhere!?

Oh yeah, I'm keeping a running total on that doc. I was just thinking there's no spot for a max weekly milage spot.

Did a suposedly hard session last night where we were doing so many minutes at marathon pace, then some more at 10k'ish pace, then some more at marathon pace. Obviously had a few minutes in between for a natter and to recover a bit each time. Was surprised at the end to see that I'd done just over 6 and a bit miles, but in a total time of at least 5 minutes slower than my 10km time.

Guess it just proves I wasn't trying hard enough, or I should be racing the next 10k a lot faster.

Today's session will comprise of some fine local real ales followed by a curry. :D

    I'm Back!!!!!.... (again :o)

So after a truly awful 2011 with many many false dawns and just as many setbacks (and a mortifying 151 miles) here's hoping 2012 is a lot more like 2010 - 600+ miles, a couple of half marathons and all going well a 2nd crack at DCM.

Question - am I mad to consider aiming for the Marathon after so few miles last year? Have only started back a week ago and really feel like I'm starting from scratch....

You have 9 months to train, should be fine. But treat it as if you're starting from scratch - build up slowly, don't fool yourself into jumping ahead of your fitness levels.

Personally I wouldnt worry about Marathons at the moment. Focus on just getting out running again and enjoying it. The fitness will come just focus on getting the consistency in

In short term I would say focus more around 5k and 10k races as you will get away with the lack of miles more than the likes of a HM or Marathon. and evaluate your fitness in a few months time.

However I am a big believer in high mileage and not to attempt marathon till you are sustaining higher mileage for over a year atleast and have built up a huge aerobic base so my opinion may not match your own personal ambitions/ commitments

+1, Personally I would not contemplate a marathon with only 600 miles of a base (including Marathon Training), you just wouldn't do yourself justice IMO.

Great advice Ray, thanks. Yeah have been very mindful of that, started with a couple of 1 milers last week. Did 2.5 this morning easy enough but will be taking it very handy...

Thanks Ecoli - yeah plan is to aim for Great Ireland in April, then the race series in the summer with a few 5ks along the way. I'll aim to start a plan around May/June but I'm not going to do it until I know I can do it well

    Thanks guys :)

Anyone got any tips on treating plantar fasciitis? Broke down after a mile in Raheny yesterday, despite intensive icing/rolling/anti-inflammatories/stretching and a physio visit during the week.

Completely forgot about this thread, just added my January miles kilometres now, I don't think an extra 21 km is going to cause much change to the table!

Competition is really stiff this year.
Last January I ran about 30 miles less than this year and was easily in the top 5. This year despite the increased mileage it is a struggle to hang onto the top 10.

A bit of research shows I was breaking THE RULES there. Probably why no-one replied. Carry on.
