Hi Anne, Only getting around to reading your London report now - life really crazy at the moment ! Sounds like it was a tough one but just think how happy you would have been with that time this time last year. Well done. What's next for you ? C

its time to get back running :D.

My body has decided to give me the signal to get back running....My last run was the Thur after the marathon when i did a creaky 3m:rolleyes: and then my body decided it wanted a complete break for a while, so i got a lower respiratory tract infection and breathing was a bit painful so running was not an option.

So last night in bed I got a massive cramp in my right calf and when I got up this morning I had a sore heel so I took it as a sign to my self that its my body telling me I need to get back out there.

So out into the lovely sunshine for a little trot to awaken the sleepy muscles and 2m turned into 3m and that turned into a lovely leisurely 4m.:D i threw in 5 x 50 strides throughout just to shake the muscles up a bit
    4.06m @ 9.50

Happy days….so I will do a few easy runs for the next couple of weeks to get back into it and then we’ll see ;)

    Tuesday 21st May
    Plan - 4m easy
    Actual - 4m in about 38 mins,

no watch for this as left it on the desk in work from last Thur and kept forgetting to bring it home. Easy morning run after dropping kids to school, turned about at my 2m marker, no sunshine….but it did come out about lunch time!!:)

    Wednesday 22nd May
    Plan 4m steady
    Actual 4m easy with strides……

:o I forgot that it was suppose to be a steady run until I was 2m in and I was running laps of the football pitch while the 3 kiddies were training so I just kept going and added 6 x 1 width of Football pitch strides at the end just for a bit of shakeup of the legs.
The first 2.8m I had company and so I let my companion set the pace as she is new enough to running, so it was a nice, easy chatting pace and then when I was on my own the pace seemed to creep up:rolleyes:!!! I had the watch as I remember to wear it home!!!!

    10.09, 10.11, 9.44, 9.14, 9.09(.10)

    Thur 23rd May

    Plan 4m easy
    Actual 4.53m steady (from yesterday)

I have decided to bring my paces all back to a bit as I found they were getting a bit too fast. So my new easy pace is approx 9.30 – 9.45, my new steady pace is 9.00 – 9.15
Today the plan was not to let it go faster than 9 min/m and I nearly succeeded, when it got too quick I pulled it back resulting in 9.01 avg pace phew!!!

    Sunday 26 May
    Plan 7m easy
Missed my run on Saturday, but got out on Sunday in the beautiful sunshine and really enjoyed my nice easy run. My aim was to keep it easy at slower that 9.30 and i got close enough. I reckon the heat kept me slow....

    Plan : Cross
Pilates for 1 hr. This was my last Pilates class until Sept and im going to miss it. My back has been annoying me and it was the same last year when i got back running after been off sick...so its the Glutes medias thats the culprit. I could feel the difference at Pilates and i was unable to hold the Plank for more than 2 mins and i struggled with other exercises so will keep an eye on it and stretch it well.

    Tuesday 28th May
    Plan : 5m easy
Met up with LizzyC and we were off for our trot by 7.55am. Its great to have company and to get it over with for the day. Another lovely run

    Thursday 30th May
Missed Wednesday planned run as i was up all night with a sick child and then had to take her to Doctors. OH wasn't home until late so didn't get out at all.
So wednesdays planned session was carried out this morning with LizzyC, my new regular running partner for during the week....its great to have someone to keep me in check :D

    plan : 2m easy, 10 x 30 sec hills, 2m cooldown.

A beautiful warm sunny morning and off we went. We decided as this was our first hill session in a long looooong time that we'd take the easy gentle Kyber for our hill(the road not the grass real hill around it...)and we walked all the recoveries....
    Warmup - 2.5m = 9.59, 9.48, 9.46(.50),

    Friday 31st May
    Plan : Rest
Seeing as I took Wednesday as a rest day I was a day behind schedule so instead of the 5m as planned for Thur I decided on an extra easy recovery type 3m run. My young lad was coming on the bike and as this was his first venture out I decided 3m was enough as he was just back from an hr of OT I didn't want him doing too much. Another reason I'm breaking in my orthotics and so the first mile was to be easy and then i'd swap back to my usual insoles.

It was a smashing evening and I was really enjoying the easy run so when it came to 1.5m turn back we decided we'd go another bit and it turned into a 4m run. If I was on my own I'd have kept running :D
9.54, 9.52, 9.50, 9.50, 11.00(.11) (had to push him up the hill here)!!!

    Total 4.11 in 40.37 @ 9.53 Super enjoyable run.:D

    Total for May: 60.14m

    Saturday 1st June

    Plan: 5m Steady
Another lovely evening run even thought it was chilly when i went out, so i ran back an got my new sleeves. Great invention ;) We had torrential rain earlier and i was really beginning to think this wasn't going to happen. I don't mind running in rain, but i hate heading out to run in the rain :o..anyway it cleared up and off i went at 9pm!! such a busy time of it these days!!!
I decided this time to wear the insoles for the last mile and change when it beeped for 4m done...this was a lovely fly catching run:( that had me coughing and spluttering and cursing for not going earlier...anyway it was nice and steady and at 4m i stopped and swapped over the insoles. Felt like I was running slower so when the watch beeped for 5m and i saw the mile split i was very surprised.....didn't feel much faster!!

    8.51, 8.52, 8.53, 8.41 (oops) 8.24 (double OOPS) 9.19..tried to slow it down

    Sunday 2nd June
    Plan 8m easy

Legs a bit heavy but its from the new orthotics and i'll get used to this. I wore them for a longer distance last night but as it was a steady run it wasn't for any longer in time so today I dropped them at the 1.5m to go and headed off on my easy run.
Evening run and boy was it very heavy and hot. I brought a 500m bottle of water as hitting the town tonight and don't want to be dehydrated;). Im wearing my watch but I don't have pace on display so im running solely on feel. So it was a nice easy run and I kept it this way...I wimped out of my original planned route as there's lots of hills and I thought it was too warm:o.... so out and back along the main road instead...
got back home and decided to get a little extra into the legs so went by the house and back home, then I rounded it up to 9m by running round the house with my youngest alongside me so cool down pace!!

9.31, 9.31, 9.24, 9.22, 9.28, 9.45, 9.32 (.66). Changed insoles here so decided to lap it to see how pace was as I feel i'm bouncing along in the new insoles
    9.27,9.54, 10.20(.41)

So the insoles were in for 2.41m and they were really annoying me by the time I was finished...so will have to keep building it bit by bit!!

Hi Anne, were you wearing 'natural' runners with the orthotics?
Tried wearing them a few years ago but could never get used to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭Younganne

Hi A. I'm just wearing my own runners and I remove the insoles and put in new ones. the left one is raised higher than the right one and they are 3/4 length. this is to align my two legs and take the pressure of my toes. These were custom made by Michael Davis in Well Shod in Laoise. I reckon they'll be fine when I get used to them!!

    Monday 3rd June
    Plan - Cross Training -
No Pilates for the Summer so I went for a 40 min walk while No1 was at her footie training. body is sore in lots if places due to the breaking in of the insoles but I just kept walking!!

    Tuesday 4th June
    Plan 5m easy
Very tired and dizzy today and going with the kids all day so when it can time to go for a run at 8pm I took the sensible decision to go for an early night instead. So no running today...

    oops hit post too early.:o

    Wednesday 5th June
    Plan 5m easy
Still a bit tired this morning but out in the lovely sunshine. 10.30 am and it was 18 degrees....thankfully there was a lovely breeze on the way out the road...It was so nice that instead of turning at 2.5m I just kept going!!! Ihad to turn about at 3.5 as time was against me and had to do a pickup from playschool!! There was no breeze ont he way back I felt the full brunt of the heat!!!
Anyway 7 lovely miles -3m in the new insoles then I swapped back to old ones. ~Im managing t go further before I have to change then on easyrun. And the body is not as sore after.

    Plan: 20 min Recovery

    2m @10.32
legs were tired at the start but were fine with in about 5min......

tomorrow will be spent standing and cheering my young lad at the Meath Community Games Athletics so I will probably have tired legs come Bohermeen 5k tomorrow night. But the plan is just to see where i'm at fitness wise at the moment and if I can get to within a sniff of my PB would be great but a PB would be a bonus;)(positive thoughts....)

    Saturday 8th June - Bohermeen 5k
Entered this last night(ie Friday night) at 9pm as up to this I was unsure if I wanted to do it as I really couldn't handle another race this year without a pb (2 out of 3 races in 2013 so far with no PB is not good for the confidence!!)..
anyway headed off in 19 degrees and thankfully i'd run the last couple of days in this heat so wasn't too worried about it and it was only 5k not a marathon..:o

After a day at community games, (where my young lad came 5th in his heat..i am very proud of him and it shows how much his weekly OT is helping his gross motor skills and his confidence) and beach splashing/walking I got home at 4.30pm, tired and hungry....got some grub into me but at 5pm while just finishing :o I realised what a bad idea eating salads was but nothing I could do about it....I went for a 30 min nap, got up and sorted kids. Got to Bohermeen just after 7, I abandoned the car and kids and left OH to park in the field while I jogged to the clubhouse to collect my number and go to the loo....wasn't sure how far up the start was or even what time it was so I headed up to the start. met a few familiar faces, had a chat and then got into position....

Not really much to say about the race except it was hot, I went out too fast:rolleyes:, even though it didn't feel it at the time, and it was hot:D

mile one was 7.10 so I dropped the pace a bit, just as well as we had a lovely hill in the middle of mile 2....7.40 for mile 2 and I was starting to feel the first mile but tried to relax..another runner I know came alongside me and I stayed with her for a while but she went ahead of me, i let her go, but I reeled her back in on mile 3 and finished 33 secs ahead of her:D
    mile 3 was a little fast than mile 2 at 7.34, with the last .14 @ 6.42
now the official time has me at 23.28 which is a gun time and my garmin give me 23.21..my gun time on the garmin is 23.29 and it took me 8 sec to cross the line. It really annoys me when they tell you its chip timed and then give you gun time!!!

    anyway Garmin stats are
    7.10, 7.40, 7.34, 6.42
    3.14m @7.26 in 23.21
    Official result 23.28!!

Anyway its a new PB, previous one being 23.42 last July in SOH 5k.:o

anyway im delighted to be back to some sort of form and will just keep looking forward now!!

didn't do a cooldown as I just wanted a cup of tea and I had a sick stomach so just went with the tea.....planned a short run when I came home but the Miller was nicely chilled so had a few of them instead!!!;)

    EDIT: Chip time in 23.21

Well done on the PB and nicely controlled race(after 1st mile;)) by the sounds of it. We are all prone to that fast first mile I think regardless of the distance. I know I'm guilty of it on a regular basis.
