Thursday/Friday Snow Potential

Right as it would seem the storm system predicted 3 days ago is looking like trailing through the channel perhaps impacting the south English coast with high winds.

However the result of this is to move a large band of precipitation over the UK and a portion of precip is expected to affect some parts of the southern half of Ireland.

It is possible there could be a period of prolonged snow for those inland of the east coast during Thursday night.

Here is a chart for 9pm

    And dew points

    39-101.GIF?14-6

Thereafter it will be cold and frosty from Friday through the weekend with harsh frosts and the possibility of some more snow showers particularly in the north.

It's almost set in stone for something white to fall but I wouldn't rule out a change yet :P

Any more movement south on the system will more than likely result in showery conditions and only the extreme south getting a doucing.

It's a lose lose for Dublin really, the further north the precip goes, the probability of stronger east winds increases and therefore more chance of rain!

Lets hope we can find a mid-point with offshore winds.

tbh I'd be surprised if the Dublin area missed it. Winds would be strong enough to throw in some precip further north :P

I live in Dublin and that seems to just cover my house in pink

If I could just add, there is a risk of snow this evening and tonight in the western coastal counties from Donegal down to west cork as a weak system pushes in from the Atlantic.

The beaviest preciptation is likely after midnight especially in Clare, Galway, Mayo, and Donegal. Ity is a very marginal setup, however, and any snow is most likely above 100m, 10-15 miles inland.

From that model it looks like Cork misses out:( Well the city anyway

Cork's not going to get snow. Snow is for more refined counties with less horrible accents.

Rain for Dublin i'd guess from this but some snow thursday/Friday before a loosly predicted milder period next week would be nice.

Are we talking the Waterford area here??? Happy days if so but surely not? After all the talk of the north getting it ...... feel free to explain ;)

Next GEFS run at 3.30pm should tell more. I think the system might only skim the southern/sotueastern coastline. I will post updated charts when they appear online

Latest Update from the Met Office. Snow for England and Wales?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,452 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

I see from that UKMO video, where he mentions heavy snow for Wales, if you look a few frames before, you can see the same symbols/hatch pattern for the east coast of Ireland (Dublin and Wicklow anyway).

A dump of snow would be satisfactory compensation for not having a storm! :D

So does this mean the south east can forget about it as will miss out again? :(

Upgrade for snow on Thursday night as the LP system has tracked a tad north. Note that this does not appear to be a disruptive snow setup but has the potential to drop a cm or two in many parts of the southeast at least.

Give it until the next GEFS run at 9.30pm before getting too excited, Karen. The positioning of the low pressure system heading from our south toward the english channel is key. If it shifts any further south then the snow potential will also shift south. If it tracks further north then better again. Ultimately, the intensity and longevity of any precipitation also remains uncertain. Either way, parts of the country deprived of snowfall for 12 long months are in their best position to see snowfall yet this winter.

Just hang on to your hats for another GEFS run or two I say.

I don't understand any of that stuff you just wrote except about being in a position to see snow and that is enough to me :D This is way more interesting than studying for my finals!

So how's the City of Cork looking for snow? Not very good I bet:( I'm worried also that if we do get snow then the rest of the country will get the real arctic blast in January and we'll have nothing and it will be all "well you did get snow in December...."!

Not looking good for Donegal then :( Would you be able to tell me how many meters Buncrana is asl? Thanks ;) Donegal gets good coverage but not so much here in Buncrana .. Even Derry seems to do better than us weather wise and thats only 14 miles away. Snow dance continuing :D
