Used them twice today, very handy to get around the city.

They need one in LIT and another in the Cresent, then your'll see a massive pick up in usage, would also make my life a tad easier :D

I'd guess the likes UL, LIT, Jetland, Raheen and the Crescent will all get stands once the scheme get up and running.

I'd include the LEDP there too. They'd never get me off the scheme if they did that!

That's the hope - but if the scheme is not sufficiently large at the start it might not get the user take up. Creating a negative feedback loop.

Would love to see this scheme extended out to LIT, The Crescent etc. When would such an extension be likely to happen? It seemed to take a couple of years to extend the scheme out to Heuston Station etc in Dublin ...

I was in Dublin last weekend and was shocked that the Bike Scheme was not available out around Rathmines or Ballsbridge. Perhaps the LUAS & the DART wouldn't make them viable.

as much as i would like to see the scheme extended out to the crescent.

i can see it not working so well what might happen is that lots of people would take bikes out there and the station would end up being full and you'd have no where to drop your bike off at

There's been a hole dug in the footpath across from Tait Clock outside the casino as well for the last few days.

I saw that! I thought it was an unusual place to put it considering there is so much space around the clock itself!

Not really the case. The bike scheme isn't really in direct competition with rail. The bikes are generally used for short journeys.

It will be eventually extended as far out as Finglas and Terenure. The next area for expansion is the Liberties and The Coomb. Then Stoneybatter Grangegorman and Phibsboro. It's a slow process and is somewhat dependent on the provision on cycling facilities, which so far has been less than ideal.

I suppose the point I was making is that if it takes that long in Dublin to reach out to the suburbs in Dublin how long will it take in places with smaller populations.

Limerick's smaller size could mean less time for expansion.

Currently in Dublin there is a whopping 5km, as the crow flies, between Killmainham and Grand Canal Dock Bike stations, yet both these stations are technically in Central Dublin. It'll take Dublin Bikes longer to reach the suburbs because there's a whole lot more of them.

If Limerick's scheme had the 5km diameter that Central Dublin's scheme has, it'd cover Moyross to Doradoyle i.e. the entire Limerick urban area.

The same applies to Galway and Cork as well. All the regional schemes need more stations to provide greater coverage, and have greater distances between stations.

Does anyone know what the level of participation has been like since the scheme launched in Limerick?

I was in Cork city centre recently and there seemed to be plenty of people cycling around on the bikes.

I must have seen at least 15 using them last week. Seemed to be getting busier as the weather picked up. Then it got shíte again! :pac:

I was in Cork city centre recently and there seemed to be plenty of people cycling around on the bikes.

Last Tuesday the Irish Times reported the following

    http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/cork-bike-share-scheme-starts-with-a-rattle-1.2098360
    "
Some 2,000 cyclists have signed up to the bike-share scheme in Cork, and about 1,500 in each of Galway and Limerick.
    "

Cork City is the only city that has put in some cycling infrastructure recently like Contra flow Cycle lanes along with the Bikeshare so cycling has higher visibility in the City? I only have experience of cycling in Galway City and Limerick City on the bikeshare so this is just a guess? Perhap's might explain the greater uptake in Cork. It has a bigger population as well though.

Pity there's none out in the Crescent. I could cycle into town then

This was kind of anticipated though to be fair with Cork being given a much higher allocation than Limerick and Galway.

Limerick could do with more encouragement of the bike scheme. Maybe if some of O'Connell street does become pedestrianised it could promote the use of bikes on the street.

Why not turn Paddy's weekend and Riverfest weekend into a "Car-Free" weekend and encourage people to use their own bikes as well as the Limerick Bikes.

Maybe try to bring in some stunt bike demo for Riverfest and use a skate park or a pop up skate park in the city center to encourage people and kids into using their own bikes.

Also a couple of more bike routes would be nice. It would be awesome for example to be able to cycle to Bunratty Castle or even Foynes without worrying about vehicle traffic.

The biggest concern is that drivers seem to think that cyclists don't belong on the road (which is ridiculous) and most drivers don't look for them when making turns.

*I understand that some cyclists are idiots but that I can get over. A cyclist does something stupid and they end up hurt. But a driver does something stupid then the cyclist still ends up hurt!

It's not very suitable weather for bikes, when it's warmer around June/July/August I'm sure the bikes will be used more

The Treaty Stone station (next to the Curragower bar) is up and running now. icon14.png

The Crescent (Newenham Street), St. Mary's Cathedral, Baker Place and Bedford Row (Henry Street) should be ready to go soon enough too.

No sign of work on O'Connell Avenue (An Mhodhscoil) yet and I suspect Colbert Station is delayed as a result of construction work.

I use the bike scheme at least 5 times a week. It is absolutely fantastic. I live about 5 minutes walk from one of the bike stations and I find myself heading in to town, where as before I would have driven out to the Crescent. There really needs to be a bike station outside Debenhams though or somewhere more central on O'Connell Street.

There's going to be one at the corner of Bedford Row and Henry St

Don't want to have to re-read through the whole thread so just wondering, the €150 holding charge, does that come off your card at initial sign up and then is returned or what way does that work?
