Are R* really just going to let Game Informer make all the exclusive announcements for them?

Even when I saw the GI tweets I immediately assumed R* would drop all the info themselves before the December edition.

    Thoughts?

Why would they pay for ad campaigns or put effort into updating the site with a quirky video to announce things when GI would bite their hand off for an opportunity to fly across the country to their offices and do their work for them?

I mean, if GI were to release details, the internet would explode within hours of the issue going on sale, and it'd have virtually the same effect as if R* had announced it themselves IMO.

Id be fairly confident GI had to pay $$$ to get exclusivity rights aswell.

This is GTA V, even before all the current hype, this game sells itself.

Are GI paying for the exclusive? R* owe them nothing. Exclusive or not GI are still going to have pages and pages of it no matter what way the info comes out?

They don't need ad campaigns, put the trailers and info on their website and let GI et al pluck it and distribute to the masses. Why shun the rest of them by giving GI everything when they simply don't have to?

Probably $$$$'s. We don't even know if GI are going to print anything substantial anyway, probably just a regurgitation of what we already know with one or two new screens and a rough RD of Q1 2013.

I see what you're saying about just posting on their site and letting the press off, but by making it secretive and giving an exclusive to one magazine it builds suspense and encourages speculation, which wouldn't happen if IGN and Destructoid ran huge articles detailing everything about the game tomorrow morning.

As you say, the game sells itself, so they won't be putting out too much info about it if they don't have to.

I guess R* have made their decision regardless of what anyone thinks. I just hope the information we get by whichever mediums by Dec is conclusive as to what the game is about.

I think we'd be lucky with Q1 2013, common assumption is March, no smoke without fire?

They've done this with previous GTA games. IIRC they always seem to give a magazine an exclusive look, giving away some of the general plot and new gameplay mechanisms.

I think they drip feed information like this deliberately to build up anticipation for the game, and it'd be hard to argue that it doesn't work.

It only seeks to infuriate gamers, especially fans of R*. But they know they can get away with it.

    Link?

im a games journalist for a living. there is no link

what's the deal with everyone automatically thinking all the information in the world is online. i said it would be friday, if it was online already that wouldn't make it friday, that would make it today

The quote you took over-simplifies my point.
when GI would bite their hand off for an opportunity to fly across the country to their offices and do their work for them?

What I was saying was that R* could easily not buy any advertising and magazines and websites would do it for free or even pay R* to let them be the first to break the story.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

course they could. but that would only be a fraction as effective, and big companies rarely like partially effective solutions

Fair enough, but with the general lack of information on GTA V, you can forgive someone being skeptical about friday. Just saying

don't get yourselves too worked up. i have no idea what friday will bring other than it'll definitely bring something. anyone expecting some kind of massive in-depth reveal with all the info will probably just end up disappointed

    Massive in-depth reveal you say?

I think I speak for all of us here when I say my hopes are firmly up.

The quicker Helix can add "Games Journalist" to his profile the better, that way we can avoid a page of "HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT??!?!" comments every time he posts something. :pac:
