Well it definitely is, seeing as we'll be getting new consoles in Q1-Q2 of 2014 and companies already have dev kits.

But I'm thinking they could go down the LA Noire route to boost graphics by spreading over a number of discs. They could have an install disc (similar to Forza) that would install all the character models, textures, cutscenes, maps, etc to the HD...

Woah... dejavu... did I post something almost exactly the same as this before?

And metal gear solid 4. Actually i wouldnt mind that

i think i remember you saying something similar alright :)

I can see multiple discs being used, the latest Max Payne had mulitple discs and that was a platform based game, much smaller world than GTA. Multiple discs wouldnt bother me personally.

Or just install the game onto the HD from the same disk as you would play it.

I'll try and find the link but a commenter on the original screens thread on the rockstar site said that the images were console images. I also heard someone back it up by pointing out that the resolution was standard console res.

    Fair play, I stand corrected.

Multple disks won't magically allow the quality of graphics the images have shown on current platform consoles. They still have the same old hardware. I can guarantee you the graphics won't be anywhere near the promo material.

I thought GTAIV ran horribly on my PS3. So if they try to bump up the visuals again, it will probably run at 5fps.

I had no problem running GTA4 on my ps3, no issues with framerate. It could be your console

I play TBOGT on my PS3 a fair bit with fellow boardsies, and I'm sure they'll tell you as well but frame rate issues on multiplayer are quite common tbh.

I think there will be only protagonist in the story.

And I dont understand why people are saying those images wont be the playable images, all you have to do is look at the likes of uncharted and the graphics in that were amazing! Its equally possible to create the same if not better ones for GTA v

It was actually Episodes from Liberty City. I tried GTA4 on my PC before that, so my perception of quality visuals and acceptable frame rates were probably a bit skewed.

To me, GTA4 / EFLC looked and played like dog **** on the PS3. I can't see at all the GTA5 screen shots becoming reality on my TV when it comes out.

I thought it looked beautiful on PS3. I must have lower standards.

The game itself was grand on the PS3. Just in mutliplayer as I said, there were frame rate issues when a lot of stuff was going on on screen. Namely helipcopter battles and the usual craic that involves a lot of explosions :)

Depends on your perspective. PS3/360 games look stunning compared to PS2/xbox.

After playing BF3 on my laptop, all 360 games looked terrible when I played them again. Ths GTA screenshots are off of a PC I suspect. The PS3 can have very good looking games like uncharted etc but GTA is a different type of game that has many things going on at once for the computer to handle.

Having said that I expect it to run smoother than GTAIV.

Never had any issues with GTAIV on my PS3. Ran smoothly. Though I found the game rather boring after the main story was complete. There wasn't as much to do like in San Andreas: driving around in tanks blasting things, flying jets, doing fire missions, etc. I'm looking forward to GTAV. Hopefully will have the dynamics of IV in it.

I've been catching up on a good few podcasts lately, and I heard an interesting theory about GTAV on (I think) Podcast Unlocked on IGN.

Basically they were saying that V could possibly be released in the transition period between Xbox 360 -> Djurango and PS3 -> Orbis, whereby they would lead on next-gen, but still have ports for current-gen.

Wouldn't be an unthinkable move from R*, as they did this with Bully.

If this were true, we'd be looking at a Q4 '13-Q2 '14 release window.

    Thoughts?

Personally I hope it's not true, but it would fit in with my fears that the game looks too good for current-gen and that we've seen nothing major of it yet.

It's been what four and a half years since GTA IV, (assuming that after IV's release they immediately began designing V) If GTA V was planned to be a PS4 / XBOX 720 release, Rockstar would have had to have known the specifics of those consoles 5-6 years before their planned release date.

I'd say it will be released on 360/PS3. Just a graphically scaled down version than what was shown in the trailer/screen shots.

Agree 100%, Its like when you go to a fast food place and buy a burger.
It always looks better in the pictures above the till....:D

It will be released on current-gen;)

Well, it's not really four years. TBoGT wasn't released on PS3 until April 2010, so I think it's pretty safe to say V preparations were only kicking into gear at that stage. Could have been a year or more in the writing/concept/prototype stage, by which time I suspect studios (especially big studios like R*) started getting dev-kits for next gen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

But the PS3 DLC were just ports. The team running the development of the game would have likely been at a loose-end for best part of a year prior to that.

I don't think the upgrades would be all that major. All they really have to do is upgrade the hardware. Microsoft at least have plenty of experience making all kinds of hardware work with their software. Most of the time they spend on the consoles would be making what they think is the ideal piece of kit for the market. It's not like they have to develop anything completely ground breaking and unseen before.

I'm not buying another console in the next 5 or so years so rockstar can lick my balls if they want to release it on a next gen console, which i reckon is highly unlikely.

Bet you won't be saying that when you see your mates playing on an XBox 720 or PS4.

I'd agree that it will be released on current gen, assuming the 720 isn't going to be out until Q1/Q2 2014.

The amount of people that already own a PS3/360 vs the amount of people that will buy a PS4/720 would make Rockstar incredibly stupid to release it exclusivlely on next gen. And they aren't stupid.

Arn't the rumors going around GTAV will be digital download only? It's a possibility, still I'm sure they could cram the full game into 1 disc, the reason LA Noire was 3 discs was due to all the HD pre-rendered cutscenes, GTA has had very few of them in the past. Max Payne 3 was the same (really annoying you are unable to skip them either, whereas in both 1 or 2 you could )

I may not be saying that but my wallet will be saying something completely different, any next gen console will probably cost around 500 quid, i have the leaving this year and 4 years of college (hopefully) after that, and the fact that I'm poor doesn't help my case.

Anywho, Uncharted 2 is on a current gen console and has the best graphics i've ever seen, GTA will be on a current gen console, if it isnt and i'm wrong i will personally eat my own face.

Like the poster said below. They are aiming at the people who have PS3 and Xbox 360. If they released it on the PS4 and Xbox what ever it will be called. There wouldnt be a very big demand for it. So yes I think they do care.

Uncharted was corridor based whereas GTA is open world, the latter takes many times the processing capability for equivalent visuals due to the go anywhere do anything nature of it.

I too believe the in game visuals won't be as good as the promo material.
