Personally, I don't think any of the past GTA characters will be heavily involved at all. Perhaps a quick CJ cameo at some point or something like that, but I'm very doubtful of any of them having any meaningful role.

As people seem to be suggesting multiple protagonists, I'm guessing that our main man is already a fairly established gangster, and instead of working alone, just has a crew that work for him.

He said in the trailer he wanted "to get away from that life, but you know how it goes" so he's obviously experienced in the criminal world. I'd imagine he's the lead guy, and you use him a fair bit, but you have to take control of one of the other lesser guys in the crew every now and again for smaller missions?

Different era's. Doubt there will even be a mention of CJ or anyone else from SA. Nobody from III (bar Lazlow) was even mentioned in IV were they? Despite being the same city.
no there is little references from previous games like on the paintings outside the museum and other pictures around the city i know there is a ref to 8 ball somewhere

Rockstar have said before that the GTA 4 universe (which includes GTA 5) is a different universe from GTA 3 (including SA and VC) so I'd be very surprised if they reneged on that and included the likes of CJ and Tommy Vercetti in GTA 5.

its obvious now that the protaganist is this black man maybe he is a decendent of cj

    what's obvious about it?

It could simply be a place holder model they're using.

I think there should be a nod to the Ganton area and/or CJ in some shape or form. It could be a mentioning on the radio, a street sign, the actual Ganon cul-de-sac, CJ's house, grave plots/graveyard for past characters from SA, the Green Sabre, some graffiti etc, etc. Something, anything. Whether Rosckstar comply is another matter, especially with their generation/universe spiel they have given in the past. But IV had a load of nods to past GTA games, so why not this?

Me and a friend were discussing on Friday the possibility of diving returning which is a given IMO. Even if CJ's house is at the bottom of the ocean bed would be something unforgettable was his thinking, couldn't agree more with him tbh :pac:

As for the protagonists and how many we'll be playing. I'm firmly in the camp that believes there will be multiple protagonists. The guy in the trailer who was driving the red convertible and the main focus of last pics we got from R* on Friday being on of them. The Ned Luke guy being another, Possibly one more, maybe someone from Grove St. gang if proper gangs do indeed return. Maybe the lad from the trailer running away from the cops in what looks to be the Ganton area, and whom had more than a hint of CJ about him which was clearly R* just taking the piss out of us fans more than likely with that one :pac:

If any past characters make a return they'll most likely be ones form 4. I'm sure Packie will make an appearance at some stage, at the end of gay tony you see him boarding a plane leaving liberty city.

I reckon thats the most likely, even if its only for someone like Mad Dog. Ryder died in the ocean, Big Smoke in a burning building, Sweet wouldnt leave the gangster life, CJ probably went back to LV, Tenpenny probably wouldnt be buried in the public cemetery. Cant see any of the main characters being buried in LS, hence someone like Mad Dog. Famous and from the area.

Dont know why people are expecting so much, it was about 20 years earlier and in a different universe. It would be nice had they kept the one time line but that isnt the case.

I dont understand, why they showed the old fella looking out over the balcony in the trailer. If he has nothing got to do with the game.

He could be a business man who the protagonist goes to to try and get a legit job.

I can just imagine the camera zooming in on your mans head as he stands up from his desk and looks out over the city saying something like:

"You see this city? It used to be riddled with gangs, riots, crime, corrupt cops... But now? We've cleaned up. Gang leaders dead or in prison, police department cleaned up, crime rates plummeting... And it's all thanks to the work this corporation has done. And you want me to hire a no-good two-bit wannabe gangbanger who's been in and out of prison more times my ex-wife's drug dealer?"

Hey R*, if you need script writers and are reading this, I AM available. :pac:

    He's the lead character?

Obviously everyone will interpret things differently, but my above post is what I thought Rockstar had been trying to make obvious (that he's a very experienced criminal who moved away to get away from his life of crime, ran into money difficulties, recruited a crew of people and is working his way back up again, possibly while in debt to another criminal boss of some type, no?)

remember the comparison of the trailer and its SA counterpart?

Well here's the same thing done with gta 4.

    (spoiler: Everything looks really dated)

I wish they would just come out and tell us the release date. Whats the point in keeping it a secret?

If it gets delayed you then have everyone complaining about it not being the right date.

If they told us the date, a lot of fora like this would not see as much traffic. People wouldn't be logging on to see if anyone had heard anything or people wouldn't be speculating generating more hype.

I'd be surprised if we found out the RD before October/November tbh.

I still don't think GTAV will look this good when released, especially on consoles. The comparison video between GTAIV and GTAV just looks like too huge a leap, particularly if the map is going to be twice as big as GTAIV was.

The leap between GTASA and GTAIV was massive, but there was a console jump in that. If this is being released on PS3/360, I can't see there being such a huge leap again.

But even then, I still think GTAIV looks glorious. A sunny LA version of that with pretty much the same graphics (new animations etc added too), and I would have no complaints on that front.

Here's the thing: the version of GTA5 that we're seeing is the "cutscene engine". If you remember from GTA4, cutscenes looked slightly better because they used more complex depth of field and more detailed character animations. I think these screenshots and the trailer are coming from the same place, they're using the in-game engine, but they're set-up so carefully to ensure top-notch graphical look.

I have no doubt though that GTA5 will look *much* better than 4, the intervening games from Rockstar have looked increasingly brilliant.

The pics from GTA 5 look better than GTA 4 because, as MJohnson said, they're cherry picked to look beautiful but also because most of us played 4 on a console and those pics will likely be from a high-performance PC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,724 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

I dunno about the PC thing, Rockstar usually use the console versions to make their trailers:

I'll try and find the link but a commenter on the original screens thread on the rockstar site said that the images were console images. I also heard someone back it up by pointing out that the resolution was standard console res.

They could go down the multi-disk route to make a bigger leap in graphics.

I can't see that going down well with fans though, so if they were to do it it would be a risk.

I'd say this is the last GTA game on current gen consoles.

I'd say this is the last GTA game on current gen consoles.

Well it definitely is, seeing as we'll be getting new consoles in Q1-Q2 of 2014 and companies already have dev kits.

But I'm thinking they could go down the LA Noire route to boost graphics by spreading over a number of discs. They could have an install disc (similar to Forza) that would install all the character models, textures, cutscenes, maps, etc to the HD...

Woah... dejavu... did I post something almost exactly the same as this before?

A good reason to buy on PS3 :)
