Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Do you usually get the Butler to do it for you?

In downtown abbey one refers to them as "the help". Isn't that right my dear lord lumen?

I've invested in Swiss Top Greens, I think they do a Black set as well which is also for alu rims. Well worth it.

also swear by green after the trip to france excellent braking, think their ok on alu wheels, i think yellow is fro carbon wheels

the amount of braking distance they shave off in the green

Unfortunately they shave off more than braking distance. They fairly eat your rims.

Can you not kill more than one cheese with the same garrotte?

Not a big fan of nutmeg, but do have a couple of mezzalunas, mortars and pestles, and a dedicated spice grinder for preparation of my favourite curries. Also a patato ricer, which is a most glorious invention.

It is it is it is. Best thing for making mashed turnips.

+1 for nixing cruelty to cheeses.

No mezzaluna? I've two - a single-bladed one (bit of an heirloom) and a double bladed one :)

Not I, though given the excellent home made nosh on recent orwell randonees, it's a fair association. Certainly not IVCA if WW200 grub is anything to go by ;)

One of my workmates is from Lithunia. At break he came back from the shop with ,amongst other things , a bottle of Ribena with extra good stuff. He didn't realise that it had to be diluted with water.
He opened the botttle and took a huge swig which he then promptly spat straight back out and shouted 'VWAT DA FOOK'
I cracked up laughing and told him he needed to go back to the shop and get some water.
'NO. I have tea in my flask.' He then proceeded to pour a cup of tea and pour some Ribena into the cup. He nearly spat it back out but stubborness forced him to drink it.

I think my favourite of the many gadgets in the kitchen is the garlic chopper:

    Garlic-Chopper-on-Wheels-3.jpg

Great for chopping the large amount of garlic I use in a dipping sauce with olive or sunflower oil, balsamico, a dash of sesame oil, soya sauce and orange or lemon juice. Very yum poured over chicken or roasty vegetables.

Yes, and no (in my case anyway) - works very well as a light baselayer though, beyond that it's not much good.

    .........the microwave oven!.

I fit into the "can't cook, won't cook" category. If it can't be microwaved, I go hungry or have to eat out.

A recent e-mail from my daughter's creche talks about biting, and includes the paragraph: "Toddlers have very limited language skills. Consequently, biting is a way to register a complaint."

Replace "Toddlers" with "Cranky dogs"/"Commuters"/"Noisy neighbours"/"People"/etc., and "biting" with, well, just about anything really, and you have what seems like a good description of daily life.

I have a Hotpoint frost free freezer for the past few years and its still frost free and it still freezes! However if you are looking at appliances with lots of moving parts like washing machines and tumble dryers, then like Lumen I would normally prefer ze Germans.

My mother has a Zanussi washing machine going strong since 1984. The only thing that ever went wrong with it was a door jam in 1985.

We have a Zanussi washing machine and Zanussi tumble dryer. Only 3 years old but they haven't let us down yet.

I wouldn't be a big fan of Hotpoint.

In a moment of crazy richesse I bought a Miele dishwasher some years ago; the saleswoman who sold it to me said sulkily that she'd love the model I was buying, but her Miele still hadn't broken down after 25 years, so she didn't feel justified in replacing it.

Hotpoint, SMEG etc - they're all made using Chinese components!

Our dishwasher broke a couple of years ago and when they guy arrived to fix it he said it couldn't be fixed (not at reasonable price) and advised us to get a new one. I asked him which one would he recommend and he waffled on through the different brands so I just asked him what he had in his house - the answer surprised me - Beko!!

So that's what we went with!

I'm just going to say it.
    I have man-flu.
Wow, just saying it out loud makes it all seem so very very real.
It's quite a severe strain but I'm hopeful it's not life threatening.
I've told my family and they're being as brave and supportive as they can be.
I can tell they're upset though by the way they look at each other shaking their heads in disbelief and throwing their eyes skywards as if to say "why him, why our dad?"
I reckon I'll be off the bike for a few days but I'm determined to conquer this cruel and merciless disease that targets young fit men in their prime.
I will of course face this great challenge with quiet dignity and post regular half-hourly updates of my progress on this forum.
    Thank you.

Surely if you had *proper* man-flu you would not have the energy to type this message - or did you dictate it over several hours by hoarsely mumbling into the ear of one of the family members holding vigil by your bed?

Studies have shown that vigorous exercising of the thumbs and fingers through use of a Playstation controller increases man-flu recovery rates by 50%.
