Hey, the leafletting/petition will take place from 1pm to 3pm tomorrow outside the SU. I'd encourage people to come and help us hand out leaflets and talk to students and persuade them to sign the petition calling for the cancellation of the hotel trip and a rearrangement of the training to take place on campus. If you don't wanna stand out in the cold leafletting just pop along and sign the petition. And if anyone disagrees with us and wants to debate or argue the points then they're welcome to join us too. See you tomorrow!

+1 sig from me, see you there.

Cheers to everyone who showed up today! We had a fantastic response and collected an amazing 125 signatures to cancel the junket.

So we'll meet tomorrow at 12pm in the Arts Block to continue to get students to sign the petition.

Then on Thursday, at 1pm, we will present the signatures at the SU to one of the exec members. We'd encourage people to come along and express their displeasure at that time as well if they like.

All that seems like the SU constitution and rules have taken some steps back over the years so, as I remember a time when a class rep who missed 2 consecutive UCs in a row was deemed to have resigned. I cannot quote the constitution stating this, but it was something told to us at the time as reps, so may have been scaremongering either. Regardless, the current constitution looks to have no repercussions whatsoever for dereliction of duties by a class rep, which seems very naive.

Would it really have been that difficult to include a requirement of at least attendance at a minimum number of UCs and training, with repercussions for non attendance being that they are deemed to be resigned, and a new rep can thus be elected in their stead? At this point, anyone (barring, perhaps, a minority of first years) who is elected a class rep is legally an adult, and should be treated as such.

Can you imagine the reaction if any other "elected" representatives were sent away for training in this manner on the basis that they wouldn't attend if it were done locally or in house? I'm pretty sure USI and Maynooth SU would be out protesting if it was done for TDs or similar, so why are you different? And the final crux of this - if you have this little faith in people to attend training, what makes you think they are going to bother their holes fulfilling the duties that you are tasking them with? This smacks of being a feel good, pat-yourselves-on-the-back-lads exercise within the SU, where you can tell yourselves you tried to give an effective system.

And this comes from someone who was a rep way back when, possibly before any of the current exec were even in the college, when class rep training was done, and done in house, and guess what - we turned up!

Just to second this. Way back when the dinosaurs still roamed I was also a class rep. We had class rep training and class reps were removed if they failed to attend meetings. Would also point out that our training was off-campus.

Some time after the extinction of the dinosaurs, I did class rep training on campus, which consisted of 90 minutes of incoherent rambling and pizza.

    Frankly nobody took it seriously.

Maybe holding it off campus with external speakers and all that jazz might be a good idea. I don't know.

Frankly I'm surprised at this reaction, the university and union piss away more money then this on silly things all the time *cough* The Gathering *cough* and nobody bats an eyelid.

How did I miss that? Same rubbish excuses. It's being held in the Spa Hotel ffs, not "miles away". Fair play to Jean for reading him the riot act.

Some people really have no idea what they're talking about.

Do people expect the SU to feed students and to go back to an earlier point supply soap and hand driers?

Do they know what the function of the SU is?

They seem to think the SU is the root of all problems that students face when they are low on cash. It's ridiculous.

Students are surviving on X amount of money has absolutely nothing to do with anything in this debate. Comical, one-upmanship at it's best.

    Ignore him.

Haha, I love the way people use the word extreme to put down political groups. Just sayin', it has an air of news of the world to it.
How about people just say that they're protesters with their own opinions and put them on the same level as every other student.

considering he runs a website with the slogan 'bringing up the digital left' was an active labour supporter in the last election , voting for higgins i would say im on the button ,

perhaps the word extreme should be changed , i will concede after all , its not like hes a confirmed SWP member or anything insane like that...

Think anyone who's ever met Declan would be offended by the use of the word extreme, nothing extreme about the chap. Just a regular nice bloke if a tad naive. Hopefully he's been persuaded to not go by my argument. He also filled us in on the fact that if we collect enough signatures we can force a council and have a vote on this thing. Cheers Declan :)

Ugh, I took you off my ignore list to see if you'd anything worthwhile to say but no, no you don't. Everyone who knows Declan is laughing at you. Good man :)

im honoured I was on your ignore list , my mission is complete so.

i suppose they needed a change considering how much behind peoples backs sniggering has been going on at both yours and declans expense since the student protests last year, and its not a small group of people either.

now lets move on before this goes any further and turns into a nasty argument.

You don't really get the point at all do you?

No i do get the point. But I have the ability to know what the point of the SU is, what they are responsible for and what is within their power to actually do.

You can't equate spending by the SU on training (or anything for that matter) to students having to fund themselves to go through college.

The SU is there to provide support and a platform to get student change in a positive manner, they are not there to fund students to go to college.

I can not understand the argument that having the Training in the hotel prevents people from leaving. I attended an information/training weekend last year with other college students in a rented house. It was a similar thing with the basics being free. There were numerous boring talks over the weekend but you were required to be there, but because it was such a big group people could easily sneak off to their rooms. There would be people you would only see at Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. I think it is fairly impossible to keep tabs on everyone in such a large group, it might be hard to spot people going missing.

I want to ask how you can ensure everyone attends every single meeting during the two days?
