Is it only in Ireland that we're taught Autumn starts in August? I got a right backlash for that recently- some non-Irish I was speaking to never heard of it.

It really depends on who you ask. Gardeners have a different interpretation to astronomers, who differ from astrologers, who argue with meteorologists...
Autumn in Ireland is a folk tradition, not sure if it's celtic or pagin in origin but it's part of the yearly cycle of Lughnasadh, Beltane, Samhain and the other one (that I can't remember). They are on fixed dates as far as I know and August is the start of Autumn.
The main thing to remember is that it's an occasion for beer and ham sammichs. Huzzah!
