Might be better off using a dedicated emulator for those. Mess is a bit of a mess if you'll pardon the pun.

Everyone needs to play Catherine for the best weirdly-translated soundbites since PS1 days. It's fantastically written for the most part, but there are some great oddities:

"Child with Chainsaw. It's the Killer. Do Not Die"

Is the game text heavy/essential to the game? Is the NTSC-J or U version region free?

The game is very voice heavy and the story is a big part in getting enjoyment out of the game. Just get the PS3 version since it's region free or wait for the european release which has already been confirmed.

I don't have a PS3 so XBOX 360 it is for me. Is the game censored in Europe at all? It looks a bit urgent...

Anything durty is alluded to or tastefully covered. Despite being one of the few mature games out there it handles the subject matter well. No mass effect style laughable romance dialogue and even more hilarious sex scenes. I doubt it will be censored.

Yeah there's nothing in the game more explicit than you can see in the trailers. There is some suggestive dialogue, but we're all adults here. Even Atavan :P

Lots of content in the game though. First play through is around 12 hours, but I'm approaching the twenty mark already trying for gold results (have got the first five stages, the next four are when the pain begins). There's also four super hard, randomised bonus levels. Plus, plenty of fan service for Persona fans! Would be pointless ordering the Japanese one though (and the 360 one isn't region free anyway) - totally glad I waited for them to announce a US release because the story and dialogue are where most of the rewards lie.

Plus, plenty of bizarre alcohol trivia. Ain't nothing like Catherine, that's for sure.

Was in Videogames New York yesterday. Great selection, but to my own (smug) surprise I pretty much owned everything! :D

They did have an amazing looking Virtual Boy shop display stand. Don't think that would fit in my bag though.

Also had a load of Turbo Graphics stuff and Hu cards.

Did they have Final Soldier? Air Zonk? Cotton Boomerang? Carnival 93?! Do they have a web presence? News me!

Just playing with my new 129 euro Touchpad and browsing is pretty nice and smooth.
One thing I di find out was that the device slots perfectly into the iCade device, meaning Mame fun for me, once they finish porting either a dedicated version of the emulator or, more likely, they port Honeycomb and I just use the Android version of Mame instead.
    Good times!

Hyh, so seems Sonic CD is going to be released on XBLA sometime soon, with a showing at PAX Prime this weekend. About time, always wanted to give it a spin but never had a MegaCD.

Don't get too excited, it's not quite as wonderful as Sega fanboys would have you believe, a bit like the Mega CD tbh.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,382 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Yeah I was expecting great things from Sonic CD but it's really not great. The levels are absolutely huge with 3 different versions of them but that doesn't matter when the level design is so poor. There's no personality to any of the levels with no memorable moments meaning that they tend to drag on longer than they should. Also the different zones bar one or two are pretty much interchangeable with each other since there's so little difference between them.

Don't know how true this is but FFS Nintendo.
If the below turns out to be true then Nintendo are fooked and I don't think that even my rabid Nintendo fanboyism will get me to buy another console.

Rumor: Nintendo to launch 3DS redesign in 2012 with less of a focus on the 3D and name change?

There’s an interesting batch of rumours from 01net relating to the 3DS. In addition to the possibility of a second analog stick being added to the 3DS, they’re saying that:

Nintendo is currently preparing a new 3DS for a 2012 release. This new version would radically tone down the whole “3D“ angle, with a new design and even probably a different name.

This makes “sense” in that it would be a response to the mistakes Nintendo has made with the 3DS. But it feels like a weird thing for the company to be talking about so early on. They haven’t even felt the effects of the price drop yet, so making huge changes in their approach seems premature.

Reading comments on mainstream consoles causes me pain, possibly as its "teh kidzzz" posting , for example , that blog post about the 3ds generated:

    10% discussion of issue
10% random key presses or spelling/textspeak so bad it may as well be
70% discussion of an unrelated southpark episode, and lastly
10% random 1 word posts relating to said south park episode, that make zero sense if you haven't seen it...And not much more if you have.

...face it , as a species we're doomed

3D isn't selling the console so Nintendo's only option is to forget it and get developers and everything else moved onto it from the DS as quick as possible. A redesigned console would be a pretty cynical move to increase the price a few months after sales (should) pick up following some bigger releases.

Nintendo 3DS now = future Virtual Boy later.
    Could just do.

Its the lack of games thats not selling it, why anyone would think otherwise is beyond me. There's no reason to buy one, so why would anyone?

Yeah but Nintendo seemed to think the novelty would be enough to get people to buy it and it hasn't been. They'd be right to stop focussing on 3D and get the games out damn quick. It's amazing how few of even the "casual" franchises have made it so far.

I wonder how 3DS console sales compare to the original DS, better or worse? And is there still a good bit of life left in the current DS to make devs bother about creating new games with 3D specific functionality.

Between the sudden price drop, the lack of titles and the rumored revision, Gen 8 Nintendo are starting to look like late Gen 4 Sega. That is, a little all over the shop. Mind, I have a tendency to laugh at early adopters, but in this case, understand a shrivel of their frustration, it's baffling Nintendo didn't launch it with at least one killer app. By that, I do mean a generational killer app, not a port of an N64 title.

So, we're now looking at a wholesale redesign of the device, mostly cosmetic but with the inclusion of a second circle pad.
Holy New Revision of Ninty Hardware Batman!!!

Yes it's the wonderful/disturbing news of a wholesale redesign and retargeting of the 3DS console with a new name, possibly, and less emphasis on the 3D.
So, we'll end up with a next gen handheld with 2 analogue controls and mostly 2D output coupled with a touch screen...
Sounds like the Vita is going to have a, potentially, easy time wiping the floor with it, assuming Sony can avoid screwing it up.

So, where does it leave the 3DS buying fanboy?
    Well, check this out..
    Shocking news!!!
Looks like the existing 3DS owners, all ten of them, will be able to purchase an addon that will be the extra circle pad, and presumably a firmware addon to go with it.

    Interesting times ahead me-thinks.
Faint whiff of early 90's Sega in the air as hardware uncertainty could lead to a lack of consumer confidence, driving everyone to buy Atari Jaguars Sony Vitas!

3DS sales have picked up a lot since the price drop and it's selling much better than the DS at this point in it's life I'd imagine. I really doubt those redesign rumours are true, such a massive redesign seems a bit drastic. Still stranger things have happened.

Well, so few were bothered with the 3DS launch that, perhaps just perhaps, a relaunch with a new name, maybe, and a killer lineup of games in 2012 will seal the deal, certainly the backwards compatibility with existing DS game collections will mean its attractive.
And the online store feels nicer than the PS Store does.
I don't know where this is all going to lead.

Don't underestimate the power of Playstation, certainly the power of Sony to screw this up.
Of the gaming devices they launched they did good with PS and PS2 but screwed up, with change, the PSP and PS3 and the PSP:Go deserves special mention as a complete cluster fup.
