Random question/observation but did anyone struggle with sleeping due to traffic noise after first moving to London?

I've just moved over and finding it hard to get a good nights sleep due to the noise of traffic and aeroplanes above at night. I'm sure I'll get used to soon! I regret taking the silence of an Irish street at night for granted in the past :p

Yes! One of the first places I lived was facing a busy road, there was a lot of noise from traffic going past each night. I came from a lovely quite cul de sac at home, so it took a lot of getting used to.
At the moment I live beside a busy junction so I get lots of cars stopping with loud music blaring from their cars right outside my window, along with the odd scrap happening, youths walking past with crap music blaring from their phones, sirens going all night and there is also a guy who walks his dog at weird times of the day and night who likes to stop and shout at his dog every few minutes, so there is all manner of noise going on where I live!
In the summer it can get really hot here so I have to sleep with my window open, as the window isn't blocking out the noise anymore it so much louder. But I'm so used to it now I sleep right through it and don't even notice it.

Good to hear you that you eventually got used to it!

I went into an interview this morning after only getting 2 hours sleep last night due to the constant flow of traffic outside and the regular sound of aeroplanes above! It seems that large trucks are very common at night also so it seems even noisier during the day.

Attempting to get more than 2 hours sleep tonight so fingers crossed it goes well....

There's one in the Kenton and I think in the Lauriston also. Meaning to try the Albion near Broadway market at some stage too. Well we might form a team some time :)

Hey oh knowledgeable Londoners of Boards I need your wisdom.

Ok so I returned last monday and started my new job yesterday. all going good so far. However I have come to the conclusion that on my salary I will not be living in a cool period house with cool people in Camden or where ever on 500-600 per month rent. So I need your collective knowledge...

With the above budget in mind where would be a cool place for me to live in London. Preferably Zone 2 to keep my travel costs down. I would like somewhere with a bit of a social scene, nightlife, clubs, pubs, youth etc. The nearest tube to work is Tower Hill as office is in John Moore Square if that helps and I would be willing to change tubes in the morn once.

am I deluded? Can it be found? Please help!!

    Cheers

Would ye not take somewhere in the east end / bermondsey and walk or cycle to work in order to cut out transport cost and add that 100 to your budget?

Also Google doesn't think that square exists. Could it be Thomas More Square you mean?

What's your requirement in flatshare and how old are you?

Cheers for the prompt reply Enda,

Yes it is Thomas More Sq,

Requirements are as stated in op, im 33

What is Bermondsey like to live in?

    cheers

When I was mentioning requirements I meant in terms of flat. Like do you want a double bedroom with your own ensuit/dedicated bathroom in a 2 person 2 bedroom flat, or do you want a box room in a 6 person flat/house?

I've never myself lived in Bermondsey but I have friends that do and they like it. They're more near London Bridge which would be a good socialising are you your age group I'd imagine - particularly Bermondsey Street.
There appear to be plenty of flats in your price range on spareroom

Another friend of mine is 32 and lives in Limehouse. Now the area is a bit rougher but also getting more edgy and (marginally) closer to the east-end which may be more your style. Also 50-100pcm cheaper.

Apologies about mix up. Yeah idealy I would like a double room and would hope to live with a few people as it would be a good way to meet more people. I googled bermondsey just now and getting mixed results regarding safety etc.

As a 33 year old guy you'll be fine almost anywhere in London. There's good and bad about everywhere but seriously Bermondsey is fine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,604 ✭✭✭blondie83

I've heard Bermondsey is grand, and very close to LB which is a good spot!

In other news I was convinced the chocolate festival was on this weekend, and have been telling people for days, even had a friend coming in to go to it - but in a typical blonde moment it's actually on next weekend - aghhhh :( I even made chocolate cake to celebrate it!

    Chocolate cake you say?
    Perfect sat morn hangover cure!

I need a quick tip on where to grab an hour or twos kip around London Bridge from about 6-8 this evening.
I'm shattered but need to meet the girlfriend at 8.
I was thinking somewhere like the royal festival hall in Southbank, but somewhere nearer London Bridge would be good.

the morgue in Guy's hospital? bring thermals though
actually, intensive care ward would be warmer, and very quiet.
if you try floors 20 and above of Guys tower, the dental hospital chairs should be comfy!

Canada Water library is an idea. I'll be coming in that way on the Jubilee.
    And it opens till 8.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Hey guys this might be worth a thread all to itself.

I made a discovery yesterday about Ryanair. I was looking at a flight to Stansted from Dublin. Quoted £33.99, fair enough. But i got my gf to check it on her side in Dublin, and hey presto €33.99 from her side for the same seat on the same flight. That's €5 euro i saved there. I dread to think of how much money i have p!ssed away the last 2 years booking flights home. If you can get someone on the Irish side to book your flights back here (if you are booking 2 singles) you really should.

this happens every so often. then they cop on to the mistake and make the euro price higher to reflect currency exchanges. it's just strange that it keeps going back to that state though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 389 ✭✭Jamey

Speaking of the currency exchange - I'm so surprised at how close the two currencies are at the moment.

I'm still using my Irish bank a/c over here as I've just moved. Looking at a bank statement online and where I've taken £20 out of an ATM or used my debit card it has only charged me something like €23. I paid for something that was £40 the last day and only €44 gone from my account. Very decent for the visiting Irish at the moment or anyone who is still using an Irish a/c as I expected it to be a lot more.

I was telling this to someone and they said that they heard that it's possible that by the end of 2013, £1 may equal €1. I'd take it with a pinch of salt of course but anyone heard something similar or have a good knowledge of economics/finance that would like to clarify?

Does anyone know any councillors? I work in the Liverpool st area and live in the docklands so any in and around those areas. :) I don't know if there are different types for different issues but I think I need a bit of life guidance.

There's some information on counselling from the NHS here which might help you. There's also a search tool here for finding local counselling services.
