Presumably it ran in order to provide a "thunderbird" option if required.

If the loco on the train failed, it could cause chaos on the single line.

Something I don't understand with IE is the prolonged time spent over making decisions about trains with faults. Why couldn't they immediately change the locomotive and proceed with minimal delay? This trying to fix it does not sit well with me especially when they have lots of 201's available on tap.

I fail to see how they justified the delayed departure of the 13.00 when they had 1 hour to prepare it and then it still managed to depart 17 minutes late.

    Am I missing something here??

    Yes...

Options were very limited due to the amount of passengers on offer. A big train was needed. If it had been a "normal" weekend 5ICR on hand for the 1500 Cork would have been used with no capacity issue.

The 1300 MKIV set was in Inchicore and wasn't due down to circa 1230-1240. This was used for the 1200 service as it was the quicker of the two to get away.

The loco was changed on the 2nd set and this did the 1300. Do remember a full train prep would have to be undertaken once the loco was changed and this takes time. No like hopping in your car and driving away. The passengers can only be loaded once this is complete.

Ok fair point about checks after a replacement loco.

As for the weekend can see they were heavily stretched, was delayed 25 mins waiting for a 6 coach 22 to arrive and then two came along at once!

Only gotten around to sift through my photos from last week's RPSI 3 day tour.

Crossing a Dart at Dun Laoghaire and the recently covered cutting.

    DSCF6514_zpsc2d6f984.jpg

461 had to shunt the Cravens into the little used long siding at Enfield on the Saturday.

    DSCF6607_zpsbd09b264.jpg

Something of a traffic jam in Kildare occurred in Kildare on Sunday late in the day.

22207, which formed the afternoon 16:30 ex Heuston, sits at the down platform while the RPSI set pauses on the up platform which is on a loop off the Up running line. The 17:00 Cork followed the commuter Kildare train, which would normally depart from the Up platform as the 17:35 to Heuston. As the RPSI set was in it's usual home, it remained on the down platform, leaving the Mark 4 set to gingerly work wrong way through the station. Once it had past, the steam special then waited for the 15:20 ex Cork to overtake before 461 made it's way back to Connolly.

    Evening folks,

    Two updates this evening.

    - A lunchtime visit to Rosskelton today for 22016 and 22043.

    - Railtours Ireland launched a new tour last Saturday called The Dublin Bay Hopper. They claim it to be the world's first exclusive hop on hop off train tour!
The tour will operate each Saturday at two hourly intervals from 0900 to 1500 hours and uses specially branded EMU Unit 8107. Railtours Ireland Staff will be on board with full commentary throughout. Tickets cost €19, valid on The Dublin Bay Hopper, and all DART trains Saturday and Sunday.

I wasn't able to make it to Dublin on Saturday, but Railtours Ireland's Shane Roberts was out and about to take some photographs and he has kindly let me use them on the website.

They're using "intercity" DMUs on Cork-Mallow commuter trains?

Before people start getting too excited, the 08:00 Mallow-Cork service is always operated by an ICR (Mark 4 on Fridays) prior to that set operating the 09:20 Cork-Dublin service.

This train was previously operated by Mark 4 or Mark 3 stock.

Merely using the trains that are available.

Your right but Mark 4 operates Monday-Friday with the ICR om Saturday since the 19.00 ex Dublin changed to 22 on Fridays.

Sadly ixflyer, getting excited is easier than knowing the actual facts.

Anyone with an interest in Irish Railway operations would know that the 0800 Mallow - Cork has always been operated by INTERCITY stock, even back to the days of MK3 rolling stock. It is 4ICR F.S.X., MKIV F.O & 7ICR S.O. The set then goes onto form the 0920 Cork - Heuston service.

    Evening folks,

Some photographs taken over the Bank Holiday Weekend by me and contributors to the website.

The final day of May has photographs from contributor Shane Roberts of the Railtours Ireland "Dublin Bay Hopper" Specials which operate between Connolly & Bray on Saturdays.
    http://smu.gs/1oOTJ8A

The first day of June has photographs from Killarney and Portarlington. Contributor Barry Pickup was out on the GNR Mainline for the RPSI Balbriggan Festival Specials. The Bank Holiday Monday has pictures from Portarlington & Monastervin and features the Waterford - Ballina and Westport - Waterford Timber Trains, plus the six hour late (!) Ballina - North Wall IWT Liner which carried just a single 40ft box.

Finally, something a little different. On Saturday I took a day trip through the Gap of Dunloe to Lord Brandon's Cottage and from there we took a boat back to Ross Castle.
A fabulous day, the weather was perfect and the scenery is some of the best of Ireland.

on a 90mph non-stop service? No, let's put a 2600 wheezing up the line at 70 odd instead.

(Also, doesn't a Mark 4 set do one rotation a day or am I misremembering?)

I'm just going by what the caption called the train. Not typical that a 22-mile nonstop would be deemed a commuter service, is all; if there were stops at Dublin Hill, Blarney, Ballynamona et al I'd regard it as a commuter train.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,037 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

all well and good if all long distance routes were prioritized for the intercity DMUS, but as the people on the sligo line and us cargo on the wexford line know we lose out and always will because were not one of the "pet" routes, and as for the technically international service between dublin and belfast, the fact suburban railcars are used in a failure is beyond ridiculous, so yeah, whatever about cork tralee, commuter stock should be running all local services out of dublin 70 MPH or not, 4 tracks out of heuston, use them, customer comes first, not operational convenience

ticking a box on a form does not make you of a religion.

Just wondering , would the ex BR MKI generator vans used in the weed sprayer trains be the oldest rolling stock in semi-regular use in the island of Ireland? From what I can tell they are over 60 years old now.

I reckon 3187 would be the oldest Iarnrod Eireann item of stock still on the mainline. The MK1 coach dates from the mid 1950's so would be in the region of 60 years old.

Of course the RPSI have much older items of rolling stock in semi-regular service as well.
