He played as a half back for the county minors. Paudie O'Neill and Gary White were midfield ahead of him. John Crofton played him at full forward and at midfield.

When he got the injuries around 07/08 he started hitting the gym and came back a few years later a totally different athlete. He was still quick over the first five yards but he was now built like a tank. I can't remember him even been tried at midfield after his injuries under either McGeeney or Ryan. I suppose he wouldn't be able to get around the field enough for a midfielder at inter county level.

Did we not discuss this a few years ago and the thinking from you guys was that he didn't have the legs mobility for an intercounty position out the field.

Tommy Moolick vs A O'Connor will be interesting if Tommy starts
i wouldnt have said that tbh. i have seen him play for clane before and he is a serious athlete

at the same time after the injuries i agree with klairon he is heavier set but the players around him are super fast imo and his fielding and distribution in midfield is exactly what kildare need

He gets by at midfield in club football on tighter pitches and at a lower intensity level. He'd be gassed after twenty minutes up against a quality midfield on a big pitch like Croke Park or Thurles on Saturday. His kick passing probably wouldn't be up to it either. Hugh Lynch is one of the most accurate kickers in the county but like Tomas he isn't mobile enough for midfield at inter county level anymore.

Tomas still has something to offer as a full forward but he's likely to find himself down the pecking order next year if he does return to the fold. Smith and Fogarty offer a lot more scoring threat and we'll probably see a few young lads like Neil Flynn experimented with next winter. Tomas isn't going to be improving at this stage of his career.

the main part of his game i think is wasted is his fielding of the ball in the centre. i have a soft spot for him though lol love him as a player tbh. my view may well be rose tinted glasses :D

You can't help but like the guy because he always gives it everything and he never gave a full back an easy time of things despite his limitations. His fielding was always fantastic but the days of a specialist high fielder at midfield appear to be gone. Tyrone won three All Irelands without any player who could dominate in the air. When they couldn't break the ball away from players like Ó Sé they would let him field it and then swarm him when he came down with it. Dublin came along and moved it on even further after Whelan retired. They have won two All Irelands with their goalkeeper as arguably their key player. His variation of his kickouts has more or less redefined midfield play. Most teams are picking mobile lads who line up in the middle before splitting and running to the wings to claim low trajectory kickouts. Teams spend hours perfecting dummy runs and ways to create space so a keeper can pick a simple pass to a teammate who can catch it unopposed.

Kildare struggled against Laois for a while this year to compete in the air against two superb high fielders in Quigley and O'Loughlin but Cribbin and O'Neill eventually destroyed them in every other facet of play because the Laois pair had nowhere near the fitness to stick with them around the field for two games.

No team named yet again. Another reason why I can't wait to see the back of this management team.

I did hear Mark Sherry is starting, not 100% though.

Hard to be anyway confident of getting close to Cork, a lot of people saying Cork are the absolute limit of what we can beat at the moment but I think the likes of Down, Derry and Meath would be more realistic.

The 7 day turnaround and "Cork's mental fragility" are being way over-played in some quarters.

I'd be happy with a good performance and if we can stay within 5 or 6. A lot of that is riding on keeping Colm O'Neill quiet which won't be easy. A good start is imperative too.

Best of luck to the players and management, it could be the last time we see a lot of players in a Kildare jersey.

Fair play. Can't believe they were that price.

Great team for the qualifiers Kildare. No ridiculous wide count tonight. Be tough to beat if they replicate or even build on that.

Great performance and some players really stepped up to the mark. Great atmosphere from the supporters

Fairplay and congrats, lads. Beat us well no complaints at all. Completely outfought and outplayed us. Your two lads in midfield were magnificent and you had plenty class in the forwards to finish us off. Important you use this as a platform to drive on now and make it count for something bigger. Best of luck for the rest of the year.

Congrats lads a really impressive performance this evening, there should be no reason that you shouldn't give it a right good rattle next time out. We should be guaranteed big numbers in Croker for the double header

Fair play lads. Damm near faultless performances tonight. Best of luck against You Know Who.

Well done to Kildare - Fantastic performance from everyone involved. Ye've had 2 bitterly disppointing relegations to deal with and no one in Cork begrudges ye the win. Met a lot of Kildare Supporters at the league game in Cork in 2014 and they are the best in the country.

Hope ye go on and win Sam now.

That's the best performance I have seen from a Kildare team in a long time, full of pride, heart and ambition, it made me even prouder to be a Kildare man than I already am.

Magic. For the 3 thousand or so Kildare fans there tonight that will be hard to top. I don't think we've enjoyed a match as much as that since the 2000 Leinster Final replay.
