    Hello folks,
    Quick one really.
Just wondering what the prevailing opinion is on this.
Should we continue to have rage comics in the you laugh you lose thread?
Or are they cluttering up the thread unnecessarily?

Could they be broken out into a rage comic thread?

About 10% are mildly humorous, the rest are utter crapola.

I think this is a good idea as you laugh you lose is starting to be dominated by these comics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Korvanica

Yea get rid of them from YLYL... everyone's just firing any old rage comic together and sticking it up..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭MitchKoobski

    Cluttering things up a bit.

YLYL isn't the place for people to post "here's my attempt at a Rage comic"

I think they deserve their own thread at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,992 ✭✭✭✭partyatmygaff

They deserve their own thread. Some are brilliant, a lot of them are utter rubbish.

Get rid of them > Own thread

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 35,945 Mod ✭✭✭✭dr.bollocko

Thats what we talking about, just moving them to a dedicated thread of their own. I mean people can sub that thread and YLYL... I guess it's just trying to take a mega thread and make it more manageable / enjoyable for people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,499 ✭✭✭Sabre0001

Haven't looked in YLYL in a while now and haven't missed it. Perhaps it's the flood of rage comics (perhaps it's the endless stream of unfunny memes). Someone posted a picture before which summed it up perfectly:

Overview of man sitting at desk
    *scroll* *scroll* *scroll*
    hehe
    *scroll* *scroll* *scroll*

It's become too easy to avoid losing in that thread.....

    🤪

Sorry, I just realised how that looked :/

I meant "Get rid of them <Arrow pointing to the right -> to their own thread "

    :o

    Scheisse!!

I clicked keep 'em in ylyl, meant to vote for them getting their own tread.

Any chance of getting rid of the iphone autocorrect ones also?:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

Don't go into the YLYL thread because of them, their boring and repetitive nonsense, I really don't understand how most of them are supposed to be funny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,330 ✭✭✭niallon

Good rage comics can be great but as Mitch said, people are using YLYL as the place to see if they're any good at making rage comics...they're not

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,277 ✭✭✭mehfesto

    Move them to another thread.
If they get their own page, it'll be infinitely more popular than YLYL then, judging by the last 100 posts or so. Just because people don't like them, doesn't mean they should be removed. I'm not mad on the Bear Grylls ones, but I seem to have enough mental capacity to scroll past them.

If you remove rage comics, why not remove and make individual threads for the text ones, bear Grylls, cyanide & happiness, facebook status'... etc, etc.

Seriously, if people can't have a sense of humour or scroll past something they don't like, they really shouldn't be on a humour forum.

    Ban them altogether :p

    Not funny anymore.

I don't think of it as getting rid of them, more, they've become so popular, they deserve their own tread..

I'm in two minds, if there was a separate thread then I don't think I'd bother checking it for the one out of every 50 that is actually funny. On the other hand it would free up YLYL for the proper funny pics

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭actuallylike

    Move them to another thread.
I think they should stay. I find some funny and some not funny but I'm not out to ban them. I personally find none of the autocorrect ones or dog forts (thank god they're gone) funny but I understand humour is subjective so I wouldn't suggest to get rid of them.
The thanks underneath the rages suggest that people do find them funny so I don't see the issue really. Is it that much of a chore to scroll past? Obviously it is to some.
And also, the whole issue of being against people trying out their own rage comics bewilders me as well. It's much better than just reposting something from reddit. Some are rubbish I know but some are great, relating to our own YLYL thread instead of just bringing up the rear of another one somewhere.

Move all meme related "humor" into a mememega thread, and keep YLYL as a thread dedicated to actual funnies.

You should change the rules so that whenever a rage comic has the precursor, "Here's one I made myself" it automatically gets deleted.

    Id say have 3 threads
    • Rage Comic Thread
    • Other Meme Thread - Dating Site Murderer/Facebook Girl/ Socially Akward Parrot(?) etc
    • YLYL

Might be too much for the mods though ?

    Actual funnies...

I sent a mail to dr.bollocko about this earlier.

I love random images and I love funny images even more. YLYL was one of my favourite threads on boards.ie and one of the main reasons why I stuck around these parts.

    Anyways...

I did notice that there has been a very serious decline in the quality of images in you laugh you loose and I think this is mainly down to the have a go rage comic maker and then the text backlash against them. Perhaps this has stopped good contributions being made as some people have mentioned here that they don't even bother looking at it any more because its has gotten so bad.

Drinking of piss memes also shares the blame.

The internet hasn't stopped being funny... and I don't want to have to sort through porn on 4chan for my lols.

I'm just going to leave this here.

Also Cheers to Dr.Bollocko for opening up a bit of debate about it. Its good to know that other people have also recognised the decline. Good mod :).

The trouble is, do we risk splitting YLYL up too much? If we move Rage comics, will people want memes removed too? Who decides which ones are memes? And if you take both of those out, does YLYL go from being one of the busiest single threads on Boards to being just a normal thread?

Personally, I think that enough people know how to make the rage comics and they can be made in such a way to apply to almost any situation, that they should get their own thread. I don't agree with the argument of "Some people are making them just to try it out" or "This is what happened me today". There's nothing wrong with that. Humour is subjective, and if you don't like it, scroll past. What I would say the problem is, is that because rage comics are so easy to make for those situations, we then end up with posts from people saying "What?" etc.

So to summarise, I think new thread for rage comics, but no other types of pictures(memes, autocorrect etc) should get removed or new thread.

Please note: this post was brought to you dripping in sarcasm.

In fairness, there's no such thing as 'actual funnies'.
Humour is subjective. Hence the  for you thinking otherwise. No need to take it so personally.

    Anyway...

That bolsters the point - you laugh you lose is about humour - not everyone has the same sense of humour, we can't expect EVERYONE to like EVERYTHING in it. I enjoy rage comics, but I also like other aspects of YLYL. Dividing them just seems pointless to me. Look at all the people who thank rage comics - they don't only thank rage comics.

But anyway, seems most people are against them, so it's only fair to follow the consensus!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

An awful lot of the posts in YLYL aren't funny - not just the rage comics. Perhaps posts with less than <insert arbitrary number here> "thanks" after <insert arbitrary time-frame> could be deleted? It might encourage people to make an effort. And it would feel like "thanks" actually meant something for once...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,291 ✭✭✭Junco Partner

    Move them to another thread.
Will a separate thread really stop the problem? I know for a fact that there is a lol-cats thread a couple of pages back yet YLYL is choc full of terrible, repetitive images of cats where the humour comes solely from their poor grammar. I appear to be one of the few who still has the ability to scroll past.

Wouldn't work. Sure you'd have seen it already by then.

I'm very much against this - YLYL shouldn't be segragated IMO. Rage comics are the target of peoples' ire at the moment, but once they're pushed into their own corner, how long before people start complaining about Advice Dog spinoffs (which are taking the piss at this stage, but it takes two seconds to scroll past), Bear Grylls, Dog Fort, etc.?

Also, people complaining about homemade rage comics - sure there are some bad ones, but there are some very good ones out there too. Why discourage original content creation in favour of images that most people probably saw on Reddit a couple of hours earlier?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

    BaZmO* wrote: »

    Perhaps.
As things stand Person A posts, then persons B through Y have to read the post over the next [longer time frame].
    The other way:
    If person A posts then
if it is funny then persons B through K might thank it when they read it, and the post is left there, to be enjoyed by the rest of the posters over the next [longer time frame].
If it is unfunny and receives no thanks within a [time frame of judgement] then a mod could delete it, saving persons L through Y having to read it.

<optimism>Also, hopefully people would realise they are not funny, and would stop posting.</optimism>

I've nothing against rages, but I think that the sheer volume of them warrants their own thread.

I don't see how it's original content, it's the same jokes told with the same images over and over again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

As opposed to the rest of the images in YLYL?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,053 ✭✭✭Aldebaran

I'd like to see rage comics in their own thread precisely because I enjoy them, but I really can't be bothered to read through YLYL anymore.

I don't see why they shouldn't have their own thread, it makes sense that they would.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Korvanica

One thing I think needs to be implemented in YLYL is instant bans for chat etc.. There has been a lot of that going on recently too...

    Move them to another thread.
Like everything else, the rage fad will die eventually...it's probably already going that way since people are complaining of too much quantity and not enough quality.

If the rage haters show patience I'm sure their frequency in YLYL will eventually drop out.

I like the idea of one thread being a somewhat historical account of the trends of internet humour piling the good in with the bad and vice versa.

Couldn't agree more with the above two posts.

Definitely move Rage and other meme's to their own thread.

I am definitely a rage hater, but I have never given out about it in the YLYL thread, i just skip past them, but its a fad that is showing no signs of dying out. Its been going a long time now, and its worse they are getting and more frequent.

    Move them to another thread.
First they came for the rage commics,
and I didn't speak out because I didn't like rage commics.
Then they came for the dog forts,
and I didn't speak out because I didn't like dog fort.
Then they came for the bear grylls,
and I didn't speak out because I didn't like bear grylls.

    Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,576 ✭✭✭garv123

"If you dont like it scroll past it" is said alot but some of the rage comics are so long it takes forever to scroll past the crap. A lot of meme's are funny but these duck and frog ones etc are usually not funny and the poster usually has about 20 of them in the one post.

If they are kept in the thread there should be a limit to how many can be put in each post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,301 ✭✭✭Flesh Gorden

I nearly always skip past the rage comics, find only a few funny

I always scroll past the longer ones

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 35,945 Mod ✭✭✭✭dr.bollocko

The dip in quality of the vast vast majority of the self made ones is kinda killing the thread for me. Just personal opinion. No mod hat on. I just think some people really need to stop bothering their balls posting every little thing they made / think is funny. However I did say with the mod hat firmly back on that I'm not here to moderate humour where it is at all possible.
If I weren't a mod I'd be firmly in favour of a "Get rid of the crap ones" approach.
But then one man's crap is another man's dinner (ie human centipede) so that is unfortunately unworkable.

The poll is interesting as it indicates a lack of a landslide one way or the other really tbh.
I'm somewhat against change for the sake of it unless the vast majority have a preference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,967 ✭✭✭✭Zulu

    a 60% majority is a landslide!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭MitchKoobski

As the guy who started the Demotivationals thread, I think my opinion counts for two!

    :P

That thread has been going great for over a year now and we rarely ever see those pics in YLYL.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,944 ✭✭✭✭4zn76tysfajdxp

    Move them to another thread.
I personally just think that people should be discouraged from pointing out what comics they made. It doesn't matter if you made it, if it's funny it's funny and people will reward you with glorious thanks likewise. "My first attempt at a meme" just screams "I MADE THIS. THANKS IT BECAUSE I MADE IT REGARDLESS OF ITS QUALITY, FRIENDS!!! :):):)"

In my opinion, bohemothic threads like YLYL will go through trends and phases where a certain type of meme will dominate, which will piss some people off and delight others. Setting up a thread just for meme comics sets a precedent where we may have to open other threads for, say, dog fort comics and Bear Grylls. Next thing you know, the forum will be cluttered with a spate of smaller threads, the original thread will become a shadow of what it once was and half of everyone's time will be spent policing YLYL for the wrong pics in the wrong thread.

My point is that the rage comics trend will probably die out when people get bored of it and that another thread just for them is probably unecessary. But if the majority want to start a new thread, who am I to stop them? ;)

    Just who am I? :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Let them have their own thread. Same with those autocorrect ones if they start becoming a nuisance too
