If any of you who are registered for state savings online got an email notification this Monday morning and then couldn't log in to see how much you won, relax. It isn't a prize, it's just notification that state savings online now allows online cash-in/reinvest options. Which cold be quite useful. Typically, they blew up the website while launching this, and managed to make it look like a DoS attack. There's a very helpful video of a MAN (because this is money after all) with a laptop and a mobile telephone showing us how it works........

Thanks - got the email but didn't bother following up - have just gone thru the cumbersome paper cash-in option so delighted to know they have progressed that bit.

€50 for me today. 2,187 numbers away from my last winner on 19 November. Shows that bonds worth €13,668.75 can win €100 in a month. By contrast I have 1,600 bonds €10,000 which last won a prize on 28 June 2018. That is the same as €30K not winning anything in over a year. And any set of 1,600 bonds, or multiples could endure the same bad luck. Someone with €50K or €100K could go for a year not winning.

On the other hand again, 8 winning bonds in Down today, as many as all of the North gets in some draws. And very likely 3 of them belong to the same person.

We finally cashed out last week, got a cheque in the post (because they said we gave them invalid IBAN info, I double checked it, but I guess I may have gotten it wrong). So it was just over 1 year (I'd have left it in for the Christmas draw, but we needed it before the end of the year), €25k, zero wins. It would have been nice to get one win, but neither of us are particularly lucky. Our money was safe for the year, and it didn't cost us anything in negative interest.

The €50K winner in Dublin was bought about 30 years ago. People might overlook or forget how many chances their bonds have to win a prize.

You can look back 6 months on the Check my Numbers section of the site. Put a load of numbers either side of your own as well, and you could see if you had any near misses.

You will be notified if you win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,886 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

It's interesting to look at the vast numbers of Unclaimed / Uncashed prizes in that section of the site. I asked for a range of 100,000 bonds from the early 1990's and among the very long list there were three cases of bonds one number apart, as per the start of the list below.

Uncashed are cheques which apparently reached the winner, but they never bothered to cash them. The Prize Bonds company have to keep these on their books, because someone could turn up at any time for the money. Unclaimed is probably where the letter was returned undelivered, and the person could not be traced.

    For BB108280 - BB208280

Prize Bond Number Prize Value Status

    BB109461 €75.00 Uncashed i

    BB109942 €63.49 Unclaimed i (IR£50)

    BB109943 €75.00 Unclaimed i

A 50k winner from Kildare bought in 2019. Not me.

Still just the one win for me, of 500.

  • Registered Users Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Sligo Quay

Thanks for that, I was wondering when today's AQ winner was purchased, 30 years old seems right as I've some of them 2 letter bonds from the 1980s, good to see an old bond winning the top prize for a change.

Anyway nothing for me today, I see the Greek Bond holder with the ZH series bonds won another €50euro today.

I would go for 1992. Very few bonds sold back then compared to this last ten years or so. An AE bond is from 1985.

The next draw is Thursday 30th, and €250K up for grabs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Sligo Quay

AE to AN series is from 1985 to 1990, I have bonds from AF to AN, the format changed on the bonds when Fexco got involved, the old tradional format changed in 1990.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,886 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Nothing changed in 1990 to affect the sequential issue of bond numbers.

A poor enough return for me in 2021 after a good run in 2020.

    In the 53 draws on a holding of €68k (was low 60's for a short while), I got 1 x €50 win.

Happy New Year everyone and hopefully a bit better luck ahead for 2022.
