All the people advising us to take out our money and go chasing big returns may not be thinking it through. What would be the effect on the economy if our €4 billion and another €150 billion on top moved into the shares/property/gold/bitcoin etc spaces? It seems a lot of people are happy to keep their money safe with little return, and that is part of how the economy works.

On the NTMA long term schemes, they are paying zero or very little in the early years. I would take my chances with Prize Bonds instead of tying up large sums with a view to a modest return after 5 or 10 years. They might turn out to be unwise choices, if inflation comes back.

New to boards and just found this thread. I got €3.5k of PB between Sept 2013 and Dec 2014 when my son started school and so far I have won 7 prizes of €50 at rate of one win per year.

As he starts secondary next week I'm going to get a similar amount so it will help with the first year of college or towards travel etc. when he is older if he doesn't want to go to college. It's safer than the lotto, but let's see if it will match the return of the 3% savings cert!

Good luck with that, my return over the last 4-5 years is about 0.1%

Hi dxhound - sorry to dig up an old post from last year.

Do you happen to know what €100k would win you with average luck (not including the big winners like in the previous post) now since they changed the prizes/rates earlier this year?

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,673 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Five prizes now €250 with average luck.

Thanks. I've certainly noticed my win rate has decreased, although I was getting beginners luck last year so I guess it's evened out a bit.

I did a count to see how previous calculations are holding up. The four draws in August. All bonds are under 3 months.

Aug 06 21 million bonds AWN to AXH inclusive, 126 wins average 6.0, highest AWX 10, lowest AWP and AXC 3.

Aug 13 20 m AWQ to AXJ 102 wins average 5.1, highest AWU and AXH 10, lowest AWY 1.

    Aug 20 18 m AWU to AXL 105 wins average 5.83, highest AWU 10, lowest AWW 2.

    Aug 27 17 m AWW to AXM 87 wins average 5.12 highest AXE 12, lowest AXL 2.

    Total wins 420 from 76 million bonds average 5.5263 per million. x 52 x €50 = €14,368.42 winnings for one million bonds worth €6.25 m in a year.

Divided by 62.5 to get winnings for €100K = €229.90, nearest to €250 in €50 prizes. So 5 prizes for €100K in a year with average luck.

Nothing for me today. The number of €50 prizes in each of the September draws is 4,149 up from 4,130 in August.

The newest bond to win on 06 August was AXI431062, newest 03 September AXP564502, sales of around €44.5 million.

Has anyone had a letter from prize bonds looking to confirm the source of the funds?

The want proof also like bank statements, pay slips etc. Seems a bit excessive considering I gave them all the information when I signed up to prize bonds last year.

I never heard of this. Can I ask how significant a sum it was? The most I've bought in one go was €58k so maybe it's for amounts closer to the max allowable figure.

Do you get notified by post if you win or do you have to check your numbers for each draw?

(I have a few from the early 80's - before emails, lol)

A couple of things of interest today. Or friend in Greece who won €50K a while back got two prizes today. Not easy to search the new Boards, but I am fairly certain that previous winners went up to around ZH816xxx, so their holding would be over the €250K.

    Prize Value

    Winning Prize Bond

    €50.00

    ZH760839

    Greece

    €50.00

    ZH782934

    Greece

Also very unusually only one of the €1K prizes went to Dublin. Two each to Sligo and Wicklow.
